Evaporation and Subsequent Adsorption of Alcohol Molecules at Aqueous Droplet Surface Observed by Cavity-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Cavity-Enhanced Fluorescence in Colliding Droplets of Rhodamine 6G Aqueous Solutions

A liquid droplet can act as a microscale high-Q optical cavity via a whispering gallery mode, where light resonates with enhanced intensity. A collision of two droplets temporarily exhibits a unique morphology, which provides a more effective optical cavity than a single droplet. We investigated the mechanisms of cavity-enhanced fluorescence in colliding droplets of aqueous rhodamine 6G. Laser-excited spectra and fluorescence generation times were acquired. The fluorescence spectra had two peaks: one attributed to amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and the other to lasing. The lasing generation time had a longer delay relative to that of ASE, which indicated that it required a longer propagation distance for the positive feedback. Overall, this provides a basis for the development of a highly efficient dye laser using colliding droplets.

Unraveling Particle Formation: From Single Droplet Drying to Spray Drying and Electrospraying

Spray drying and electrospraying are well-established drying processes that already have proven their value in the pharmaceutical field. However, there is currently still a lack of knowledge on the fundamentals of the particle formation process, thereby hampering fast and cost-effective particle engineering. To get a better understanding of how functional particles are formed with respect to process and formulation parameters, it is indispensable to offer a comprehensive overview of critical aspects of the droplet drying and particle formation process. This review therefore closely relates single droplet drying to pharmaceutical applications. Although excellent reviews exist of the different aspects, there is, to the best of our knowledge, no single review that describes all steps that one should consider when trying to engineer a certain type of particle morphology. The findings presented in this article have strengthened the predictive value of single droplet drying for pharmaceutical drying applications like spray drying and electrospraying. Continuous follow-up of the particle formation process in single droplet drying experiments hence allows optimization of manufacturing processes and particle engineering approaches and acceleration of process development.

Initial Collision Process of Two Miscible Droplets

Dynamic properties of the metastable interface between two miscible solutions are investigated by the collision of two droplets. A clear interface is observed between the two colliding droplets. The interface moves in the colliding droplet toward the side where the original droplet has a lower surface tension. The interface is set to the middle of the colliding droplet by controlling the surface tension of the droplets to observe the chemical reactions at the droplet interface by cavity-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. This study provides a foundation for further research on the initial process of the chemical reactions of two miscible solutions.

Smart supramolecular sensing with cucurbit[n]urils: probing hydrogen bonding with SERS

Rigid gap nano-aggregates of Au nanoparticles formed using cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]) molecules are used to investigate the competitive binding of ethanol and methanol in an aqueous environment. We show it is possible to detect as little as 0.1% methanol in water and a ten times higher affinity to methanol over ethanol, making this a useful technology for quality control in alcohol production. We demonstrate strong interaction effects in the SERS peaks, which we demonstrate are likely from the hydrogen bonding of water complexes in the vicinity of the CB[n]s.
