Self-Assembly in Aqueous Oppositely Charged Gemini Surfactants: A Correlation between Morphology and Solubilization Efficacy

Using coarse-grained molecular dynamics to rationalize biomolecule solubilization mechanisms in ionic liquid-based colloidal systems

Solubilizing agents are widely used to extract poorly soluble compounds from biological matrices. Aqueous solutions of surfactants and hydrotropes are commonly used as solubilizers, however, the underlying mechanism that determines their action is still roughly understood. Among these, ionic liquids (IL) are often used not only for solubilization of a target compound but in liquid-liquid extraction processes. Molecular dynamics simulations can shed light into this issue by providing a microscopic insight of the interactions between solute and solubilising agents. In this work, a new coarse-grained (CG) model was developed under the MARTINI framework for gallic acid (GA) while the CG models of three quaternary ammonium ionic liquids and salts (QAILS) were obtained from literature. Three QAILS were selected bearing in mind their potential solubilising mechanisms: trimethyl-tetradecylammonium chloride ([N1,1,1,14]Cl) as a surfactant, tetrabutylammonium chloride ([N4,4,4,4]Cl) as a hydrotrope, and tributyl-tetradecylammonium chloride ([N4,4,4,14]Cl) as a system combining the characteristics of the other compounds. Throughout this hydrotrope-to-surfactant spectrum and considering the most prevalent GA species across the pH range, the solvation of GA at two concentration levels in aqueous QAILS solutions were studied and discussed. The results of this study indicate that dispersive interactions between the QAILS and GA are generally the driving force in the GA solubilization. However, electrostatic interactions play an increasingly significant role as the GA becomes deprotonated, affecting their placement within the micelle and ultimately the solvation mechanism. The hydrotropic mechanism seen in [N4,4,4,4]Cl corroborates recent models based on the formation of a hydrotrope-solute aggregates driven by dispersive forces. This work contributes to the application of a transferable approach to partition and solubilization studies using molecular dynamics, which could complement experimental assays and quickly screen molecular candidates for these processes.

Ecotoxicity and interacting mechanism of anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and its mixtures with nonionic surfactant fatty alcohol-polyoxyethlene ether (AEO)

This paper reports the proportion-dependent toxicity of binary surfactant mixtures containing anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and nonionic fatty alcohol-polyoxyethlene ether (AEO) toward Photobacterium phosphoreum. The crucial role of toxicity interactions was elucidated by spectroscopic probing the refolding of the unfolded bovine serum albumin (BSA) induced by SDS and theoretical calculating the interaction parameter of mixed surfactants based on Rubingh's model from the critical micelle concentrations. The SDS/AEO mixtures can be divided into two groups based on the toxicity response to the proportion of AEO in the mixtures: Group I contained low mass proportions of AEO, that is, SDS:AEO = 4:1, 3:1; Group II featured high AEO proportions, that is, SDS:AEO = 3:2, 1:1, 2:3, 1:4. The toxicity of SDS/AEO mixtures decreased with the enhanced proportion of AEO in Group I and then fluctuated slightly when the AEO proportion increased to that of Group II. The mixture with the mass ratio of 1:1 showed a slightly higher toxicity than the others in Group II. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images illustrated that the addition of AEO hindered the action of SDS against the cell membrane. Fluorescence measurement indicated that AEO could extract SDS molecules embedded in the BSA matrix, except for those bound to the highly active sites of BSA, and refold stepwise the unfolded protein. The results were in excellent analogy to the proportion-dependent toxicity of SDS/AEO mixture, indicating the formation of mixed micelles playing a key role. The interaction parameter further revealed that antagonism led to the mixture with equal mass ratio (1:1) showing higher toxicity than other mass ratios in Group II. These results can be useful for compounding SDS/AEO mixtures in application efficiently and eco-friendly.

Cationic Surfactants: Self-Assembly, Structure-Activity Correlation and Their Biological Applications

The development of biotechnological protocols based on cationic surfactants is a modern trend focusing on the fabrication of antimicrobial and bioimaging agents, supramolecular catalysts, stabilizers of nanoparticles, and especially drug and gene nanocarriers. The main emphasis given to the design of novel ecologically friendly and biocompatible cationic surfactants makes it possible to avoid the drawbacks of nanoformulations preventing their entry to clinical trials. To solve the problem of toxicity various ways are proposed, including the use of mixed composition with nontoxic nonionic surfactants and/or hydrotropic agents, design of amphiphilic compounds bearing natural or cleavable fragments. Essential advantages of cationic surfactants are the structural diversity of their head groups allowing of chemical modification and introduction of desirable moiety to answer the green chemistry criteria. The latter can be exemplified by the design of novel families of ecological friendly cleavable surfactants, with improved biodegradability, amphiphiles with natural fragments, and geminis with low aggregation threshold. Importantly, the development of amphiphilic nanocarriers for drug delivery allows understanding the correlation between the chemical structure of surfactants, their aggregation behavior, and their functional activity. This review focuses on several aspects related to the synthesis of innovative cationic surfactants and their broad biological applications including antimicrobial activity, solubilization of hydrophobic drugs, complexation with DNA, and catalytic effect toward important biochemical reaction.

Comparative Study of Conventional/Ethoxylated/Extended n-Alkylsulfate Surfactants

A series of novel anionic e-surfactants n-C _cP _pS was molecular designed and synthesized from long-chain fatty alcohols by polypropoxylation and sulfation followed by neutralization. Excellent all-round performance of extended surfactants (e-surfactants) interests us how a simple polypropylene oxide (PPO) spacer has great effects on properties. By a comparative study of conventional/ethoxylated/extended n-alkylsulfate surfactants, we were surprised to find that e-surfactants are in an obvious rugby shape at the air/water surface according to molecular surface area ( a_m), and it comes down to the intramolecular PPO spacer coiling and surface-induced collapse. On the basis of the interfacial properties of the e-surfactants, it is found that the PPO spacer can provide both hydrophilic and lipophilic contributions to an e-surfactant molecule. The synergism between PPO spacers and alkyl chains indicates that a certain PPO spacer can adjust the contributions in view of different alkyl chain lengths. Therefore, it is both the rugby-shaped molecular geometry of e-surfactants and the dynamic amphipathicity of a PPO spacer that makes e-surfactants behave with excellent interfacial and solution properties for household cleaning. Therefore, this work gives us a hint that the molecular geometry of surfactants plays a vital role in interfacial and solution properties similar to molecular amphipathicity.

Understanding the molecular orientation growth on a nanometer scale and adjustable electron transition performance of a terpyridyl derivative under different external environments
