Distinct Effects of Multivalent Macroion and Simple Ion on the Structure and Local Electric Environment of a Weak Polyelectrolyte in Aqueous Solution

Monte Carlo study of the effects of macroion charge distribution on the ionization and adsorption of weak polyelectrolytes and concurrent counterion release

HYPOTHESIS

Adsorption of weak polyelectrolytes onto charged nanoparticles, and concurrent effects such as spatial partitioning of ions may be influenced by details of the polyelectrolyte structure (linear or star-like) and size, by the mobility of the nanoparticle surface charge, or the valence of the nanoparticle counterions.

EXPERIMENTS

Ionization and complexation of weak polyelectrolytes on spherical macroions with monovalent and divalent countrions has been studied with constant-pH Monte Carlo titrations and primitive electrolyte models for linear and star-like polymers capable, also, of forming charged hydrogen bonds. Nanoparticles surface charge has been represented either as a single colloid-centered total charge (CCTC) or as surface-tethered mobile monovalent spherical charges (SMMSC).

FINDINGS

Differences in the average number of adsorbed polyelectrolyte arms and their average charge, and in the relative amount of macroion counterions (m-CI's) released upon polymer adsorption are found between CCTC and SMMSC nanoparticles. The amount of the counterions released also depends on the polymer structure. As CCTC adsorbs a lower number of star-like species arms, the degree of condensation of polymer counterions (p-CI's) onto the polyelectrolyte is also substantially higher for the CCTC colloid, with a concurrent decrease of the osmotic coefficient values.

Multivalent counterions accumulate in star-like polyelectrolytes and collapse the polymer in spite of increasing its ionization

We used computer simulations to explore the dissociative and conformational behaviour of branched weak polyelectrolytes with multivalent counterions. We compared simulated titration curves and chain sizes in the presence of added salt of various valencies, keeping the total charge of salt constant. We showed that multivalent counterions enhance ionization of the weak polyelectrolytes, in spite of collapsing of the chains. We provided evidence that such an effect is absent in systems with only monovalent counterions at the same ionic strength, and thus cannot be attributed to electrostatic screening. We attributed it to strong ion-ion correlations that we quantified by comparing potentials of mean force with the mean electrostatic potentials. Finally, we used the partition coefficient to quantify the ability of star-like polyelectrolytes to capture multivalent ions, that is important for water-treatment applications. Our work provides fundamental understanding of the mechanism of polyelectrolyte collapse and ionization response upon addition of multivalent ions.

Functional Macromolecule-Enabled Colloidal Synthesis: From Nanoparticle Engineering to Multifunctionality

The synthesis of well-defined inorganic colloidal nanostructures using functional macromolecules is an enabling technology that offers the possibility of fine-tuning the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials and has contributed to a broad range of practical applications. The utilization of functional reactive polymers and their colloidal assemblies leads to a high level of control over structural parameters of inorganic nanoparticles that are not easily accessible by conventional methods based on small-molecule ligands. Recent advances in polymerization techniques for synthetic polymers and newly exploited functions of natural biomacromolecules have opened up new avenues to monodisperse and multifunctional nanostructures consisting of integrated components with distinct chemistries but complementary properties. Here, the evolution of colloidal synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles is revisited. Then, the new developments of colloidal synthesis enabled by functional macromolecules and practical applications associated with the resulting optical, catalytic, and structural properties of colloidal nanostructures are summarized. Finally, a perspective on new and promising pathways to novel colloidal nanostructures built upon the continuous development of polymer chemistry, colloidal science, and nanochemistry is provided.

Biomedical applications of polyelectrolyte coated spherical gold nanoparticles

Surface modified gold nanoparticles are becoming more and more popular for use in biomaterials due to the possibility for specific targeting and increased biocompatibility. This review provides a summary of the recent literature surrounding polyelectrolyte coatings on spherical gold nanoparticles and their potential biomedical applications. The synthesis and layer-by layer coating approach are briefly discussed together with common characterisation methods. The potential applications and recent developments in drug delivery, gene therapy, photothermal therapy and imaging are summarized as well as the effects on cellular uptake and toxicity. Finally, the future outlook for polyelectrolyte coated gold nanoparticles is explored, focusing on their use in biomedicine.

Explicit Ion Effects on the Charge and Conformation of Weak Polyelectrolytes

The titration behavior of weak polyelectrolytes is of high importance, due to their uses in new technologies including nanofiltration and drug delivery applications. A comprehensive picture of polyelectrolyte titration under relevant conditions is currently lacking, due to the complexity of systems involved in the process. One must contend with the inherent structural and solvation properties of the polymer, the presence of counterions, and local chemical equilibria enforced by background salt concentration and solution acidity. Moreover, for these cases, the systems of interest have locally high concentrations of monomers, induced by polymer connectivity or confinement, and thus deviate from ideal titration behavior. This work furthers knowledge in this limit utilizing hybrid Monte Carlo⁻Molecular Dynamics simulations to investigate the influence of salt concentration, pK a , pH, and counterion valence in determining the coil-to-globule transition of poorly solvated weak polyelectrolytes. We characterize this transition at a range of experimentally relevant salt concentrations and explicitly examine the role multivalent salts play in determining polyelectrolyte ionization behavior and conformations. These simulations serve as an essential starting point in understanding the complexation between weak polyelectrolytes and ion rejection of self-assembled copolymer membranes.
