A Quadrupole-Central-Transition 17O NMR Study of Nicotinamide: Experimental Evidence of Cross-Correlation between Second-Order Quadrupolar Interaction and Magnetic Shielding Anisotropy

TensorView for MATLAB: Visualizing tensors with Euler angle decoding

TensorView for MATLAB is a GUI-based visualization tool for depicting second-rank Cartesian tensors as surfaces on three-dimensional molecular models. Both ellipsoid and ovaloid tensor display formats are supported, and the software allows for easy conversion of Euler angles from common rotation schemes (active, passive, ZXZ, and ZYZ conventions) with visual feedback. In addition, the software displays all four orientation-equivalent Euler angle solutions for the placement of a single tensor in the molecular frame and can report relative orientations of two tensors with all 16 orientation-equivalent Euler angle sets that relate them. The salient relations are derived and illustrated through several examples. TensorView for MATLAB expands and complements the earlier implementation of TensorView within the Mathematica programming environment and can be run without a MATLAB license. TensorView for MATLAB is available through github at https://github.com/LeoSvenningsson/TensorViewforMatlab, and can also be accessed directly via the NMRbox resource.

Solid-state 17O NMR study of α-d-glucose: exploring new frontiers in isotopic labeling, sensitivity enhancement, and NMR crystallography

We report the first “total synthesis” of 17O-labeled d-glucose and its solid-state 17O NMR characterization with unprecedented sensitivity and resolution.

Field-stepped ultra-wideline NMR at up to 36 T: On the inequivalence between field and frequency stepping

Field-stepped NMR spectroscopy at up to 36 T using the series-connected hybrid (SCH) magnet at the U.S. National High Magnetic Field Laboratory is demonstrated for acquiring ultra-wideline powder spectra of nuclei with very large quadrupolar interactions. Historically, NMR evolved from the continuous-wave (cw) field-swept method in the early days to the pulsed Fourier-transform method in the modern era. Spectra acquired using field sweeping are generally considered to be equivalent to those acquired using the pulsed method. Here, it is shown that field-stepped wideline spectra of half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei acquired using WURST/CPMG methods can be significantly different from those acquired with the frequency-stepped method commonly used with superconducting magnets. The inequivalence arises from magnetic field-dependent NMR interactions such as the anisotropic chemical shift and second-order quadrupolar interactions; the latter is often the main interaction leading to ultra-wideline powder patterns of half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei. This inequivalence needs be taken into account to accurately and correctly determine the quadrupolar coupling and chemical shift parameters. A simulation protocol is developed for spectral fitting to facilitate analysis of field-stepped ultra-wideline NMR spectra acquired using powered magnets. A MATLAB program which implements this protocol is available on request.

Structure Determination of Boron-Based Oxidative Dehydrogenation Heterogeneous Catalysts with Ultra-High Field 35.2 T 11B Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy

Boron-based heterogenous catalysts, such as hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as well as supported boron oxides, are highly selective catalysts for the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of light alkanes to olefins. Previous catalytic measurements and molecular characterization of boron-based catalysts by ¹¹B solid-state NMR spectroscopy and other techniques suggests that oxidized/hydrolyzed boron clusters are the catalytically active sites for ODH. However, ¹¹B solid-state NMR spectroscopy often suffers from limited resolution because boron-11 is an I = 3/2 half-integer quadrupolar nucleus. Here, ultra-high magnetic field (B ₀ = 35.2 T) is used to enhance the resolution of ¹¹B solid-state NMR spectra and unambiguously determine the local structure and connectivity of boron species in h-BN nanotubes used as a ODH catalyst (spent h-BNNT), boron substituted MCM-22 zeolite [B-MWW] and silica supported boron oxide [B/SiO₂] before and after use as an ODH catalyst. One-dimensional direct excitation ¹¹B NMR spectra recorded at B ₀ = 35.2 T are near isotropic in nature, allowing for the easy identification of all boron species. Two-dimensional ¹H-¹¹B heteronuclear correlation NMR spectra aid in the identification of boron species with B-OH functionality. Most importantly, 2D ¹¹B dipolar double-quantum single-quantum homonuclear correlation NMR experiments were used to unambiguously probe boron-boron connectivity within all heterogeneous catalysts. These experiments are practically infeasible at lower, more conventional magnetic fields due to a lack of resolution and reduced NMR sensitivity. The detailed molecular structures determined for the amorphous oxidized/hydrolyzed boron layers on these heterogenous catalysts will aid in the future development of next generation ODH catalysts.

17O NMR studies of organic and biological molecules in aqueous solution and in the solid state

This review describes the latest developments in the field of ¹⁷O NMR spectroscopy of organic and biological molecules both in aqueous solution and in the solid state. In the first part of the review, a general theoretical description of the nuclear quadrupole relaxation process in isotropic liquids is presented at a mathematical level suitable for non-specialists. In addition to the first-order quadrupole interaction, the theory also includes additional relaxation mechanisms such as the second-order quadrupole interaction and its cross correlation with shielding anisotropy. This complete theoretical treatment allows one to assess the transverse relaxation rate (thus the line width) of NMR signals from half-integer quadrupolar nuclei in solution over the entire range of motion. On the basis of this theoretical framework, we discuss general features of quadrupole-central-transition (QCT) NMR, which is a particularly powerful method of studying biomolecules in the slow motion regime. Then we review recent advances in ¹⁷O QCT NMR studies of biological macromolecules in aqueous solution. The second part of the review is concerned with solid-state ¹⁷O NMR studies of organic and biological molecules. As a sequel to the previous review on the same subject [G. Wu, Prog. Nucl. Magn. Reson. Spectrosc. 52 (2008) 118-169], the current review provides a complete coverage of the literature published since 2008 in this area.

Achieving 1 ppm field homogeneity above 24 T: Application of differential mapping for shimming Keck and the Series Connected Hybrid magnets at the NHMFL

Powered resistive and resistive-superconductive hybrid magnets can reach fields higher than superconducting NMR magnets but lack the field homogeneity and temporal stability needed for high resolution NMR. Due to field fluctuations in powered magnets, commercially available mapping systems fail to produce maps of these magnets with sufficient reproducibility, thus hampering attempts to improve homogeneity of the field they generate. Starting with a commercial mapper, we built a mapping system which uses a two-channel (measurement + reference) mapper probe. We used this system to map and then to shim two magnets of Florida Bitter type at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, FL. With a combination of passive (ferromagnetic) and active shims we achieved 2.3 ppm homogeneity in 1 cm diameter spherical volume (dsv) at 25.0 T in the Keck resistive magnet, and 0.9 ppm homogeneity in 1 cm dsv at 23.5, 28.2, and 35.2 T in the series-connected resistive-superconductive hybrid (SCH) magnet.

New frontiers for solid-state NMR across the periodic table: a snapshot of modern techniques and instrumentation

Selected highlights of the recent literature on solid-state NMR of some of the lesser studied nuclei are provided. The roles of ultrahigh magnetic fields, radiofrequency pulse sequences, dynamic nuclear polarization, isotopic enrichment, and nuclear quadrupole resonance in opening up the periodic table to in-depth study are discussed.
