Abstract
The influence of the composition of the functional used for density functional theory computations on one structural parameter (a dihedral angle) and a spectroscopic parameter (absorption wavelength) is assessed in this study on the basis of two molecules (flavonols). In this kind of molecules, these two parameters should be correlated according to the nature of the electronic transition involved. However, it is shown herein that by varying the proportion of true exchange and correlation while building a functional, it is possible to obtain independently a large range of values for these parameters without any relation with the underlying real values. Therefore, it is concluded that the choice of a functional after a benchmark, especially using user-defined functionals, should be carried out with great care to avoid such effects.

Abstract
For antibiotics misuse since the global outbreak of COVID 19, a novel strategy for discriminating and detecting antibiotics is proposed based on the graphene quantum dots with multi-doped heteroatoms including F, N and P (M-GQDs), which exhibit blue emission (419.0 nm) under the excitation of 336.0 nm. Specifically, the fluorescence of M-GQDs is quenched by tetracyclines (TCs) owing to inner filter effect (IFE) and enhanced by alkane-modified fluoroquinolones (AFQs), which is attributed to restricted conformational rotation based on π-π stacking, hydrogen-bonding and electrostatic interactions. Meanwhile, the electron-accepting property of oxazine ring in oxazine-modified fluoroquinolones (OFQs) increases emission peak at 498.0 nm and decreases emission peak at 419.0 nm as the color changes from blue to cyan. Moreover, a cascade system integrated with 3D microfluidic paper-based analytical device (3D-μPAD) is applied successfully for visually distinguishing three antibiotics, which shows great potential and versatility of M-GQDs for food safety monitoring.

Energy transfer mediated rapid and visual discrimination of tetracyclines and quercetin in food by using N, Cu Co-doped carbon dots. Anal Chim Acta 2023; 1239:340706. Abstract
The appearance of multi-drug resistant Escherichia coli makes the combination of tetracyclines (TCs) and quercetin (QCT) more common to fight stubborn bacterial infections so that the effective detections of TCs and QCT are essential and necessary. Here, a novel fluorescence probe for differentiating TCs and QCT is developed based on the nitrogen and copper co-doped carbon dots (N, Cu-CDs). The N, Cu-CDs are prepared from ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and anhydrous copper chloride as precursors through hydrothermal process and exhibit bright blue fluorescence with excellent optical stability. With the presence of four tetracyclines (DOX, TC, CTC and OTC), the fluorescence intensity of N, Cu-CDs is quenched directly due to the internal filtration effect (IFE), and the detection limit obtained through single-signal fluorescence sensing is as low as 23.8 nM for DOX, 37.2 nM for TC, 43.8 nM for OTC and 28.8 nM for CTC. More remarkably, three dimensional ratiometric fluorescence probe for detecting QCT is proposed based on the appearance of another emission at (410 nm, 490 nm) due to electron transform (ET) process. This new method shows a good linear relationship in the range of 10-100 μM with a low detection limit of 59.3 nM. Furthermore, a dual-channel fluorescence sensing platform based on microfluidics paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) is developed for simultaneously visual discrimination of TCs (DOX is chosen as the typical detecting model for TCs) and QCT. This investigation provides a new way for the development of CDs as multifunction fluorescence probes.

Abstract
As a typical class of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) molecules, 3-hydroxyflavone derivatives (3HF, also known as flavonols) have received much attention recently. Thereinto, the role of hydrophobic microenvironment is significant importance in promoting the process and effects of ESIPT, which can be regulated by the solvents, the existence of metal ions and proteins rich with α-helix structures or the advanced DNA structures. Considering that plenty of biological macromolecules offer cellular hydrophobic microenvironment, enhancing the ESIPT effects and resulting in dual emission, 3HF could be a promising scaffold for the development of fluorescent imaging in cells. Furthermore, as the widespread occurance of compounds with biological activity in plants, 3HF derivatives are much more secure to be cellular diagnosis and treatment integrated fluorescent probes. In this review, multiple regulatory strategies for the fluorescence emission of 3HF derivatives have been collectively and comprehensively analyzed, including the solvent effects, metal chelation, interaction with proteins or DNAs, which would be beneficial for ESIPT-promoting or ESIPT-blocking processes and then enhance or control the fluorescence emission of 3HF effectively. We expect that this review would provide a new perspective to develop novel 3HF-based fluorescent sensors for imaging in cells and plants.

Abstract
In this study, we determine the acidity constants of methylthymol blue (MTB) and association constants of its complexes with the ZnII, CuII, and FeII metal ions (MIs), through theoretical and experimental means. The complexes were characterized using UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy combined with soft/hard chemometrics methods and quantum chemical calculations. Quantum chemical calculations revealed that electronic transitions in the UV-Visible spectra of MTB have mixed n → π* and π → π* characters. The results of molar ratio and multivariate curve resolution alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) revealed the formation of successive 1:2 and 1:1 complexes (MI:MTB) for the ZnII and CuII systems. However, the formation of successive 1:1 and 2:1 complexes are suggested for FeII by the molar ratio and MCR-ALS. The majority of transitions observed in the UV-Visible spectra of the Zn(MTB) and Cu(MTB) complexes have ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) characters. However, the transitions in the UV-Visible spectrum of the Fe(MTB) complex have LLCT and metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) characters. For the Fe2(MTB) complex, the lowest energy transition of has an LLCT character. However, its higher energy transitions are a mixture of LLCT, MLCT, and metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) characters. The correlation between experimental and computed wavelengths revealed that the 1:1 complexes of ZnII and CuII prefer square pyramidal geometries. However, the FeII complexes always show octahedral geometry.

Abstract
Morin (2-(2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-3,5,7-trihydroxychromen-4-one) is an abundant flavonoid with various pharmacological and biological activities. Considering the ubiquitous presence of calcium cations in biological systems, it seems relevant to study the interaction of this ion with morin and the influence of pH on this system. In a first step, among the four hypothetical chelation sites, the preferential fixing site, its protonation state and the Ca environment have been determined by combining electronic spectroscopies and density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations. Then, using the same methodology, the fate of the formed complex with the variation of pH was studied. Calcium chelation occurs with the 3-hydroxy-4-keto site with deprotonation of the hydroxyl group. The coordination number of CaII does not seem to be a determining parameter insofar whatever the number of solvent molecules present in the coordination sphere of the metal, the calculation of the electronic transitions leads to the same results. With the increase in pH, a first deprotonation of the complex occurs at the level of a solvent molecule in the metal coordination sphere, followed by a deprotonation of the hydroxyl function in position 7.
