Increased Nematic-Isotropic Transition Temperature on Doping a Liquid Crystal with Molecularly Rigid Carboxylic Acids

Role of New Chiral Additives on Physical-Chemical Properties of the Nematic Liquid Crystal Matrix

We have synthesized and studied three new chiral substances as additives to a nematic liquid crystal. The difference in the optical activity and chemical structure of additive molecules results in the appearance of the chiral nematic phase and the change in both the compatibility of the mixture components and temperature range of the liquid crystal phase. The role of additives with fundamentally different structures and optical activities is shown. The increase in the TNI that is observed in mixtures with 4-[(2S)-(+)-2-Methylbutoxy]benzoic acid indicate the possibility of the increase in order caused by the formation of molecularly rigid and elongated dimers of the additive, which was confirmed using infrared spectra. The doping of the nematic liquid crystal with (2R)-(+)-2-[4-[2-Chloro-4-(4-hexylphenyl)phenyl]phenoxy]propanoic acid causes the lowering of TNI. The binol derivative S-(+)-6-[1-[2-(5-Carboxypentoxy)naphthalen-1-yl]naphthalen-2-yl] oxyhexanoic acid has the highest chirality among the additives used. One can explain the effects observed in terms of the role of size, shape, and compatibility with the nematic matrix as shown by the molecules that are used as additives.

Liquid crystal droplet design by using pseudopeptidic bottlebrush polymer additives

Liquid crystal (LC) droplets are promising candidates for sensing applications due to their high sensitivity to surface anchoring changes, resulting in readily detectable optical effects. Herein, we have designed and synthesized amino acid-based bottlebrush polymers and investigated their impact on LC director configurations in the droplets. The pseudopeptidic bottlebrush polymers with an aromatic (phenyl) and aliphatic appendages are synthesized using ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) samples are prepared by employing pseudopeptidic bottlebrush polymers and 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) LC via solvent-induced phase separation (SIPS) technique. Due to π-π stacking, the phenyl group favours radial configuration, whereas the repulsion between 5CB and aliphatic groups induces molecular alignment leading to bipolar droplet arrangement. The impact of various pendant groups attached to the polymer on the prepared PDLC sample's surface characteristics and free energy components is illustrated. The sensing capability of 5CB dispersed in pseudopeptidic bottlebrush polymers for various pH solutions is investigated using polarizing optical microscopy (POM). The PDLC samples are moderately permeable to water and sensitive to different pH solutions. The results demonstrate a simplified and straightforward approach for preparing LC-based biosensors and chemical sensors.

Broadband-dielectric-spectroscopy study of molecular dynamics in a mixture of itraconazole and glycerol in glassy, smectic-A, and isotropic phases

Itraconazole (ITZ) is a thermotropic liquid crystal that exhibits isotropic, nematic, and smectic phases on cooling towards the glass transition upon melting. Over the years, new aspects regarding the liquid-crystalline ordering of this antifungal drug were systematically revealed. It has been shown recently that the temperature range of individual mesophases in ITZ can be modified by adding a small amount of glycerol (GLY). Moreover, above the critical concentration of 5% w/w, a smectic to nematic transition can be avoided. Here we go one step further, and we used broadband dielectric spectroscopy to investigate the new phase behavior of the ITZ-GLY mixture (5% w/w). To confirm the phase transformations of the ITZ-GLY mixture, differential scanning calorimetry was also employed. The analysis of molecular dynamics of the ITZ-GLY mixture in the glassy and isotropic phases revealed features similar to those observed for neat ITZ. Two relaxation processes were identified in the smectic-A phase, with similar temperature dependence, most likely related to the fast rotations around the long axis of a molecule. Additionally, the derivative analysis revealed another low-frequency process hidden under DC conductivity ascribed to the slow rotations about a short axis. We will show that the differences in the molecular organization in the smectic-A and isotropic phases leave a clear fingerprint on the temperature behavior of relaxation times and other dielectric parameters, such as DC conductivity and dielectric strength, for which a pretransition effect has been detected.

Effect of Crosslinkers on Optical and Mechanical Behavior of Chiral Nematic Liquid Crystal Elastomers

Chiral nematic (N*) liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are suitable for fabricating stimuli-responsive materials. As crosslinkers considerably affect the N*LCE network, we investigated the effects of crosslinking units on the physical properties of N*LCEs. The N*LCEs were synthesized with different types of crosslinkers, and the relationship between the N*LC polymeric system and the crosslinking unit was investigated. The N*LCEs emit color by selective reflection, in which the color changes in response to mechanical deformation. The LC-type crosslinker decreases the helical twisting power of the N*LCE by increasing the total molar ratio of the mesogenic compound. The N*LCE exhibits mechano-responsive color changes by coupling the N*LC orientation and the polymer network, where the N*LCEs exhibit different degrees of pitch variation depending on the crosslinker. Moreover, the LC-type crosslinker increases the Young's modulus of N*LCEs, and the long methylene chains increase the breaking strain. An analysis of experimental results verified the effect of the crosslinkers, providing a design rationale for N*LCE materials in mechano-optical sensor applications.

Impurity-induced nematic-isotropic transition of liquid crystals

Complex fluids made of liquid crystals (LCs) and small molecules, surfactants, nanoparticles or 1D/2D nanomaterials show novel and interesting features, making them suitable materials for various applications starting from optoelectronics to biosensing. While these additives (impurities) introduce new features in the complex fluids, they may also alter the phase transition behaviour of LCs depending on the physiochemical properties of the added impurity. This article reports on the phase transition of 4-cyano-4'-alkylbiphenyl (nCB) LCs in the presence of an associative impurity, i.e., water and a non-associative impurity, i.e., hexane employing computational methods and experiments. In particular, all-atom (AA) simulations and coarse-grained (CG) models were designed for two complex systems, i.e., 6CB + water and 6CB + hexane and corresponding spectrophotometry experiments were performed using a homologous LC, i.e., 5CB. Results from the simulations and experiments elucidate that the phase transition of LCs depends on the mixing/demixing phenomenon of the impurity in the LC. While associative liquids like water which do not mix with LCs do not influence the nematic-to-isotropic phase transition of LCs, hexane, being a non-associative liquid, mixes well with LCs and induces a sharp impurity-induced nematic-to-isotropic phase transition. Upon application of both AA and CG simulations, we could reach the conclusion that the mixing/demixing phenomenon in an LC + impurity system influences the entropy of the system and hence the observed phase transitions are entropy-driven.
