Distance Dependence of Electronic Coupling in Rigid, Cofacially Compressed, π-Stacked Organic Mixed-Valence Systems

Excited-State Charge Transfer Coupling from Quasiparticle Energy Density Functional Theory

The recently developed Quasiparticle Energy (QE) scheme, based on a DFT calculation with one more (or less) electron, offers a good description of excitation energies, even with charge transfer characters. In this work, QE is further extended to calculate electron transfer (ET) couplings involving two excited states. We tested it with a donor-acceptor complex, consisting of a furan and a 1,1-dicyanoethylene (DCNE), in which two low lying charge transfer and local excitation states are involved. With generalized Mülliken-Hush and fragment charge-difference schemes, couplings from the QE approach generally agree well with those obtained from TDDFT, except that QE couplings exhibit better exponential distance dependence. Couplings from half-energy gaps with an external field are also calculated and reported. Our results show that the QE scheme is robust in calculating ET couplings with greatly reduced computational time.

Simultaneously enhancing the planarity and electron-donating capability of donors for through-space charge transfer TADF towards deep-red emission

Through-space charge transfer (TSCT) has been proven effective for designing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters due to the separation of the frontier molecular orbitals. Although tuning of the interaction between the donor and acceptor by controlling the conformation is known to be crucial for the photophysical properties of TSCT excited states, it remains a challenge to realize efficient red and deep-red emissions. Herein, we designed two TSCT molecules, namely TPXZ-QX and TPXZ-2QX, by using oxygen-bridged triphenylamine (TPXZ) as the electron donor with enhanced planarity and electron-donating capability. With a face-to-face orientation of the donor and acceptor segments and close π-π contacts, the new emitters have strong intramolecular noncovalent donor-acceptor interactions. The emissions of TPXZ-QX and TPXZ-2QX in doped thin films lie in the red (λmax = 632 nm) to deep-red (λmax = 665 nm) region. The photoluminescence quantum yields are 41% and 32% for TPXZ-QX and TPXZ-2QX, respectively. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on TPXZ-QX and TPXZ-2QX show external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of up to 13.8% and 11.4%, respectively. This work indicates that the modulation of TSCT excited states based on strong intramolecular cofacial π-stacking interactions is a viable choice for the development of high-efficiency long-wavelength TADF emitters.

Controlling Intramolecular and Intermolecular Electronic Coupling of Radical Ligands in a Series of Cobaltoviologen Complexes

Controlling electronic coupling between multiple redox sites is of interest for tuning the electronic properties of molecules and materials. While classic mixed-valence (MV) systems are highly tunable, e.g., via the organic bridges connecting the redox sites, metal-bridged MV systems are difficult to control because the electronics of the metal cannot usually be altered independently of redox-active moieties embedded in its ligands. Herein, this limitation was overcome by varying the donor strengths of ancillary ligands in a series of cobalt complexes without directly perturbing the electronics of viologen-like redox sites bridged by the cobalt ions. The cobaltoviologens [1_X-Co]ⁿ⁺ feature four 4-X-pyridyl donor groups (X = CO₂Me, Cl, H, Me, OMe, NMe₂) that provide gradual electronic tuning of the bridging Co^II centers, while a related complex [2-Co]ⁿ⁺ with NHC donors supports exclusively Co^III states even upon reduction of the viologen units. Electrochemistry and IVCT band analysis indicate that the MV states of these complexes have electronic structures ranging from fully localized ([2-Co]⁴⁺; Robin-Day Class I) to fully delocalized ([1_CO2Me-Co]³⁺; Class III) descriptions, demonstrating unprecedented control over electronic coupling without changing the identity of the redox sites or bridging metal. Additionally, single-crystal XRD characterization of the homovalent complexes [1_H-Co]²⁺ and [1_H-Zn]²⁺ revealed radical-pairing interactions between the viologen ligands of adjacent complexes, representing a type of through-space electronic coupling commonly observed for organic viologen radicals but never before seen in metalloviologens. The extended solid-state packing of these complexes produces 3D networks of radical π-stacking interactions that impart unexpected mechanical flexibility to these crystals.

Pre-Planarized Triphenylamine-Based Linear Mixed-Valence Charge-Transfer Systems

Three linear dimers with two redox-active planarized triphenylamines were synthesized and their structures verified by X-ray crystallography. Their radical cations, which exhibit electron self-exchange between the two redox centers, are of great interest. This process was thoroughly investigated by means of electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, absorption spectroscopy, and (time-dependent) density functional theory calculations. A comparison of the key parameters of electron transfer with non-planarized nitrogen-centered building blocks emphasizes the impact of using redox centers with low internal reorganization energies. However, the distance-dependence attenuation factor of the super-exchange mechanisms remains similar.
