A comprehensive review of cancer therapies mediated by conjugated gold nanoparticles with nucleic acid

Nucleic acids provide a promising therapeutic platform by targeting various cell signaling pathways involved in cancer and genetic disorders. However, maintaining optimal stability during delivery limits their utility. Nucleic acid delivery vehicles are generally categorized into biological and synthetic carriers. Regardless of the efficiency of biological vectors, such as viral vectors, issues related to their immunogenicity and carcinogenesis are very important and vital for clinical applications. On the other hand, synthetic vectors such as lipids or polymers, have been widely used for nucleic acid delivery. Despite their transfection efficiency, low storage stability, targeting inefficiency, and tracking limitations are among the limitations of the clinical application of these vectors. In the past decades, gold nanoparticles with unique properties have been shown to be highly efficient mineral vectors for overcoming these obstacles. In this review, we focus on gold nanoparticle-nucleic acid combinations and highlight their use in the treatment of various types of cancers. Furthermore, by stating the biological applications of these structures, we will discuss their clinical applications.

Gas-phase synthesis of nanoparticles: current application challenges and instrumentation development responses

Nanoparticles constitute fundamental building blocks required in several fields of application with current global importance. To fully exploit nanoparticle properties specifically determined by the size, shape, chemical composition and interfacial configuration, rigorous nanoparticle growth and deposition control is needed. Gas-phase synthesis, in particular magnetron-sputtering inert-gas condensation, provides unique opportunities to realise engineered nanoparticles optimised for the desired use case. Here, we provide an overview of recent nanoparticle growth experiments via this technique, how the latter can meet application-specific requirements, and what challenges might impede the wide-spread adoption for scalable industrial synthesis. More specifically, we discuss the timely topics of energy, catalysis, and sensing applications enabled by gas-phase synthesised nanoparticles, as well as recently emerging advances in neuromorphic devices for unconventional computing. Having identified the most relevant challenges and limiting factors, we outline how advances in nanoparticle source instrumentation and/or in situ diagnostics can address current shortcomings. Eventually we identify common trends and directions, giving our perspective on the most promising and impactful applications of gas-phase synthesised nanoparticles in the future.

Adhesion, mobility and aggregation of nanoclusters at surfaces: Ni and Ag on Si, HOPG and graphene

Abstract

An experimental investigation of Ag and Ni nanoparticles (NPs) deposited on Silicon with its native oxide, on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite and on graphene flakes is reported. The NPs were physically synthesized with a magnetron based gas aggregation source and the produced beam was mass-filtered and deposited in vacuum on the substrates. The study was concentrated on the morphology for the different cases, shedding some light on the interaction of pre-formed NPs with surfaces, a crucial aspect both of technological and scientific relevance. The nature of adhesion can be strongly influenced by the intrinsic properties of the surface (like for instance the energetics of interaction between the NP surface atoms and the first layers of the substrate) and/or the extrinsic properties, like the presence of defects, step edges, impurities and other irregularities. After adhesion, the NPs mobility and their mutual interaction are very relevant. In this work, the study was concentrated on NP/surface morphology, by using atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Enzyme Immobilization on Gold Nanoparticles for Electrochemical Glucose Biosensors

More than 50 years have passed since Clark and Lyon developed the concept of glucose biosensors. Extensive research about biosensors has been carried out up to this day, and an exponential trend in this topic can be observed. The scope of this review is to present various enzyme immobilization methods on gold nanoparticles used for glucose sensing over the past five years. This work covers covalent bonding, adsorption, cross-linking, entrapment, and self-assembled monolayer methods. The experimental approach of each modification as well as further results are described. Designated values of sensitivity, the limit of detection, and linear range are used for the comparison of immobilization techniques.
