Band Gap Engineering and Trap Depths of Intrinsic Point Defects in RAlO3 (R = Y, La, Gd, Yb, Lu) Perovskites

Synthesis of Pr3+-doped WO3 particles: correlation between photoluminescent and photocatalytic properties

The WO3 and WO3:Pr3+ particles were successfully synthesized by the co-precipitation method. The XRD analysis with Rietveld refinement revealed the formation of a monoclinic phase for WO3 and for doped samples, this result was later confirmed by Raman spectroscopy studies. The presence of Pr3+ in the WO3 crystalline lattice induced structural and optical changes in the particles, increasing the crystallite size, distorting the clusters (shortening of the W-O bonds), favoring the crystallinity and changing the optical gap. The predominant morphology of the particles of WO3 and WO3:Pr3+ obtained was nanocubes constituted by the superposition of plates of nanometric thicknesses. The photoluminescence of WO3 and WO3:Pr3+ was produced by the existence of surface defects in the particles. The increase in the concentration of Pr3+ promoted an increase in the intensity of PL, due to the increase in the rate of recombination of electron/hole charges. The WO3 sample exhibited emission in the white region due to the adjustment of simultaneous electronic transitions in the blue, green and red regions, characteristic of the broadband spectrum. The interval of the 2.65 eV gap band and the high efficiency in the separation of the photogenerated charges (e-/h+) with the low recombination rate contributed to the photocatalytic degradation of Crystal Violet (CV) by the catalyst. The WO3:4% Pr3+ sample showed the best photocatalytic efficiency, degrading 73% of the CV dye in 80 minutes. This result was associated with a reduction in particle size and density of oxygen vacancies on the material surface.

Structural and Optical Properties of High Entropy (La,Lu,Y,Gd,Ce)AlO3 Perovskite Thin Films

Mixtures of Ce-doped rare-earth aluminum perovskites are drawing a significant amount of attention as potential scintillating devices. However, the synthesis of complex perovskite systems leads to many challenges. Designing the A-site cations with an equiatomic ratio allows for the stabilization of a single-crystal phase driven by an entropic regime. This work describes the synthesis of a highly epitaxial thin film of configurationally disordered rare-earth aluminum perovskite oxide (La_0.2 Lu_0.2 Y_0.2 Gd_0.2 Ce_0.2 )AlO₃ and characterizes the structural and optical properties. The thin films exhibit three equivalent epitaxial domains having an orthorhombic structure resulting from monoclinic distortion of the perovskite cubic cell. An excitation of 286.5 nm from Gd³⁺ and energy transfer to Ce³⁺ with 405 nm emission are observed, which represents the potential for high-energy conversion. These experimental results also offer the pathway to tunable optical properties of high-entropy rare-earth epitaxial perovskite films for a range of applications.

First-principles studies of defect behaviour in bismuth germanate

Intrinsic defects are known to greatly affect the structural and electronic properties of scintillators thereby impacting performance when these materials are in operation. In order to overcome this effect, an understanding of the defect process is required for the design of more stable materials. Here we employed density functional theory calculations and the PBE0 hybrid functional to study the structural, electronic,defect process and optical properties of [Formula: see text] (BGO), a well know material used as scintillator. We examined possible intrinsic defects and calculated their formation energy and their impact on the properties that affect the scintillation process. Furthermore, we investigated the effect and role of rare earth element (REE = Nd, Pr, Ce and Tm) doping on the properties of the BGO system. While the PBE functional underestimated the band gap, the PBE0 was found to adequately describe the electronic properties of the system. Out of all the defects types considered, it was found that [Formula: see text] antisite is the most favourable defect. Analysis of the effect of this defect on the electronic properties of BGO revealed an opening of ingap states within the valence band. This observation suggests that the [Formula: see text] could be a charge trapping defect in BGO. We found that the calculated dopant substitution formation energy increases with increase in the size of the dopant and it turns out that the formation of O vacancy is easier in doped systems irrespective of the size of the dopant. We analyzed the optical spectra and noted variations in different regions of the photon energy spectra.
