van der Waals Interaction Activated Strong Electronic Coupling at the Interface between Chloro Boron-Subphthalocyanine and Cu(111)

Efficient Hydrogen Evolution via 1T-MoS2 /Chlorophyll-a Heterostructure: Way Toward Metal Free Green Catalyst

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is regarded as a sustainable and green way for H₂ generation, which faces a great challenge in designing highly active, stable electrocatalysts to replace the state-of-art noble metal-platinum catalysts. 1T MoS₂ is highly promising in this regard, but the synthesis and stability of this is a particularly pressing task. Here, a phase engineering strategy has been proposed to achieve a stable, high-percentage (88%) 1T MoS₂ /chlorophyll-a hetero-nanostructure, through a photo-induced donation of anti-bonding electrons from chlorophyll-a (CHL-a) highest occupied molecular orbital to 2H MoS₂ lowest unoccupied molecular orbital. The resultant catalyst has abundant binding sites provided by the coordination of magnesium atom in the CHL-a macro-cycle, featuring higher binding strength and low Gibbs-free energy. This metal-free heterostructure exhibits excellent stability via band renormalization of Mo 4d orbital which creates the pseudogap-like structure by lifting the degeneracy of projected density of state with 4S in 1T MoS₂ . It shows extremely low overpotential, toward the acidic HER (68 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm^-2 ), very close to the Pt/C catalyst (53 mV). The high electrochemical-surface-area and electrochemical turnover frequency support enhanced active sites along with near zero Gibbs free energy. Such a surface-reconstruction strategy provides a new avenue toward the production of efficient non-noble-metal-catalysts for the HER with the aim of green-hydrogen production.

Preparation, Supramolecular Organization, and On-Surface Reactivity of Enantiopure Subphthalocyanines: From Bulk to 2D-Polymerization

The development of chiral materials is severely limited by the challenge to achieve enantiopure derivatives with both configurational stability and good optoelectronic properties. Herein we demonstrate that enantiopure subphthalocyanines (SubPcs) fulfill such demanding requirements and bear the prospect of becoming components of chiral technologies. Particularly, we describe the synthesis of enantiopure SubPcs and assess the impact of chirality on aspects as fundamental as the supramolecular organization, the behavior in contact with metallic surfaces, and the on-surface reactivity and polymerization. We find that enantiopure SubPcs remarkably tend to organize in columnar polar assemblies at the solid state and highly ordered chiral superstructures on Au(111) surfaces. At the metal interface, such SubPcs are singled out by scanning tunneling microscopy. DFT calculations suggest that SubPcs undergo a bowl-to-bowl inversion that was shown to be dependent on the axial substituent. Finally, we polymerize by means of on-surface synthesis a highly regular 2D, porous and chiral, π-extended polymer that paves the way to future nanodevice fabrication.

Recent advances in subphthalocyanines and related subporphyrinoids

Subporphyrinoids constitute a class of extremely versatile and attractive compounds. Herein, a comprehensive review of the most recent advances in the fundamentals and applications of these cone-shaped aromatic macrocycles is presented.

Binding and electronic level alignment of π-conjugated systems on metals

We review the binding and energy level alignment of π-conjugated systems on metals, a field which during the last two decades has seen tremendous progress both in terms of experimental characterization as well as in the depth of theoretical understanding. Precise measurements of vertical adsorption distances and the electronic structure together with ab initio calculations have shown that most of the molecular systems have to be considered as intermediate cases between weak physisorption and strong chemisorption. In this regime, the subtle interplay of different effects such as covalent bonding, charge transfer, electrostatic and van der Waals interactions yields a complex situation with different adsorption mechanisms. In order to establish a better understanding of the binding and the electronic level alignment of π-conjugated molecules on metals, we provide an up-to-date overview of the literature, explain the fundamental concepts as well as the experimental techniques and discuss typical case studies. Thereby, we relate the geometric with the electronic structure in a consistent picture and cover the entire range from weak to strong coupling.
