Tuning the Ambipolar Character of Copolymers with Substituents: A Density Functional Theory Study

Recent Structural Engineering of Polymer Semiconductors Incorporating Hydrogen Bonds

Highly planar, extended π-electron organic conjugated polymers have been increasingly attractive for achieving high-mobility organic semiconductors. In addition to the conventional strategy to construct rigid backbone by covalent bonds, hydrogen bond has been employed extensively to increase the planarity and rigidity of polymer via intramolecular noncovalent interactions. This review provides a general summary of high-mobility semiconducting polymers incorporating hydrogen bonds in field-effect transistors over recent years. The structural engineering of the hydrogen bond-containing building blocks and the discussion of theoretical simulation, microstructural characterization, and device performance are covered. Additionally, the effects of the introduction of hydrogen bond on self-healing, stretchability, chemical sensitivity, and mechanical properties are also discussed. The review aims to help and inspire design of new high-mobility conjugated polymers with superiority of mechanical flexibility by incorporation of hydrogen bond for the application in flexible electronics.

Impact of Furan Substitution on the Optoelectronic Properties of Biphenylyl/Thiophene Derivatives for Light-Emitting Transistors

Biphenylyl/thiophene systems are known for their ambipolar behavior and good optical emissivity. However, often these systems alone are not enough to fabricate the commercial-grade light-emitting devices. In particular, our recent experimental and theoretical analyses on the three-ring-constituting thiophenes end capped with biphenylyl have shown good electrical properties but lack of good optical properties. From a materials science perspective, one way to improve the properties is to modify their structure and integrate it with additional moieties. In recent years, furan moieties have proven to be a potential substitution for thiophene to improve the organic semiconductive materials properties. In the present work, we systematically substituted different proportions of furan rings in the biphenylyl/thiophene core and studied their optoelectronic properties, aiming toward organic light-emitting transistor applications. We have found that the molecular planarity plays a vital role on the optoelectronic properties of the system. The lower electronegativity of the O atom offers better optical properties in the furan-substituted systems. Further, the furan substitution significantly affects the molecular planarity, which in turn affects the system mobility. As a result, we observed drastic changes in the optoelectronic properties of two furan-substituted systems. Interestingly, addition of furan has reduced the electron mobility by one fold compared to the pristine thiophene-based derivative. Such a variation is interpreted to be due to the low average electronic coupling in furan systems. Overall, systems with all furan and one ring of furan in the center end capped with thiophene have shown better optoelectronic properties. This molecular architecture favors more planarity in the system with good electrical properties and transition dipole moments, which would both play a vital role in the construction of an organic light-emitting transistor.

High-throughput virtual screening for organic electronics: a comparative study of alternative strategies

We present a review of the field of high-throughput virtual screening for organic electronics materials focusing on the sequence of methodological choices that determine each virtual screening protocol. These choices are present in all high-throughput virtual screenings and addressing them systematically will lead to optimised workflows and improve their applicability. We consider the range of properties that can be computed and illustrate how their accuracy can be determined depending on the quality and size of the experimental datasets. The approaches to generate candidates for virtual screening are also extremely varied and their relative strengths and weaknesses are discussed. The analysis of high-throughput virtual screening is almost never limited to the identification of top candidates and often new patterns and structure-property relations are the most interesting findings of such searches. The review reveals a very dynamic field constantly adapting to match an evolving landscape of applications, methodologies and datasets.

Polyacetylene Revisited: A Computational Study of the Molecular Engineering of N-type Polyacetylene

The development of stable and highly conductive polymers, particularly n-type materials, remains an outstanding challenge in organic electronics. N-doped polyacetylene has long been studied as a highly conductive organic n-type material but suffers from extremely poor stability. Herein, we use DFT to model a series of n-doped polyacetylene derivatives, which have been functionalized with a range of electron-withdrawing substituents, with the goal of identifying attractive candidates for synthesis. We analyze the predicted molecular orbital energies, polymer planarity, and delocalization of charge carriers along the polymer backbone. In so doing, we develop key insights about the ideal substituents for both stable and highly conductive polyacetylene derivatives. This work will inform the modern synthesis and development of new polyacetylene derivatives. Beyond this, the work identifies a variety of new materials that have not yet been synthesized and should be good candidates for emerging optoelectronic applications including soft thermoelectrics, bioelectronics, and flexible device technologies.

Rapid Method for Calculating the Conformationally Averaged Electronic Structure of Conjugated Polymers

We developed a rapid method to calculate the average electronic structure properties of large ensembles of conjugated polymer chains sampling their conformational space. This is achieved by using the localized molecular orbital (MO) method to rapidly compute the MOs and their energies for isolated polymer chains and through using a calibration scheme to further correct the obtained energies by comparison with a few accurate calculations. The method is applied to the study of the density of states and orbital localization characteristics for five polymers. It is shown that all key properties of the individual chain related to the charge mobility can be rationalized in terms of the properties of the constituent monomers, their interaction, and the conformational flexibility of the chain. More specifically we identify the features that lead to greater charge delocalization. Finally, we discuss the prospect of using this method for a computational high-throughput screening of conjugated polymers.
