How the Mixed Cations (Guanidium, Formamidinium, and Phenylethylamine) in Tin Iodide Perovskites Affect Their Charge Carrier Dynamics and Solar Cell Characteristics

A-Site Cations Impact on Nonradiative Recombination, Mobility, and Defect Dynamics in Sn-Based Perovskites

Sn-based perovskites with different cations in the A-site exhibit distinct electronic structures and dynamic properties. By utilizing time-dependent density functional theory and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics, we demonstrate that larger FA cations decrease wave function overlap between initial and final states and slow down nuclear motion. In the case of FASnI3, this alteration decreases the nonadiabatic coupling and increases the nonradiative electron-hole recombination time by 130% and 76%, respectively, compared to CsSnI3 and MASnI3 (CH3NH3SnI3). Furthermore, A-site modification significantly improves electron mobility and changes the properties of defects in FASnI3 (HC(NH2)2SnI3), which achieves higher electron mobility through a polar optical phonon-dominated scattering mechanism and exhibits higher defect formation energy and migration barriers of A-site cations due to increased steric hindrance, relative to CsSnI3 and MASnI3. These results emphasize the critical function of A-site cation substitution in controlling nonradiative recombination dynamics, electron mobility, and defect characteristics in Sn-based perovskites and provide theoretical insights for the advancement of novel lead-free perovskite materials.

Effects of the Addition of Tin Powder to Perovskite Precursor Solutions on Band Bending at PEDOT:PSS/Perovskite Interfaces in Mixed-Cation Mixed-Halide Tin Perovskite Solar Cells

Using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, we investigated the effects of the addition of tin (Sn) powder to perovskite layers on band bending at the perovskite surface near poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hole-transport layers in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) involving formamidinium (FA)-methylammonium (MA)-mixed-cation I-Br-mixed-halide tin perovskites. We performed dark ESR spectroscopy measurements of a PEDOT:PSS/FA0.75MA0.25Sn(I0.75Br0.25)3 stack and of a PEDOT:PSS/Sn-powder-added FA0.75MA0.25Sn(I0.75Br0.25)3 stack. The results indicate that FA0.75MA0.25Sn(I0.75Br0.25)3 layers have significant downward band bending near PEDOT:PSS layers. Such downward band bending is unfavorable for hole selectivity and surface passivation at the interface. However, the addition of Sn powder to the tin perovskite precursor solution was found to significantly prevent the downward band bending and rather cause upward band bending, which can improve the hole selectivity and field-effect passivation quality. This can be due to prevented oxidation of perovskite layers by Sn powder addition. These findings are crucial for developing highly efficient and stable tin perovskite solar cells.

Ligand Engineering in Tin-Based Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted aggressive attention in the photovoltaic field in light of the rapid increasing power conversion efficiency. However, their large-scale application and commercialization are limited by the toxicity issue of lead (Pb). Among all the lead-free perovskites, tin (Sn)-based perovskites have shown potential due to their low toxicity, ideal bandgap structure, high carrier mobility, and long hot carrier lifetime. Great progress of Sn-based PSCs has been realized in recent years, and the certified efficiency has now reached over 14%. Nevertheless, this record still falls far behind the theoretical calculations. This is likely due to the uncontrolled nucleation states and pronounced Sn (IV) vacancies. With insights into the methodologies resolving both issues, ligand engineering-assisted perovskite film fabrication dictates the state-of-the-art Sn-based PSCs. Herein, we summarize the role of ligand engineering during each state of film fabrication, ranging from the starting precursors to the ending fabricated bulks. The incorporation of ligands to suppress Sn2+ oxidation, passivate bulk defects, optimize crystal orientation, and improve stability is discussed, respectively. Finally, the remained challenges and perspectives toward advancing the performance of Sn-based PSCs are presented. We expect this review can draw a clear roadmap to facilitate Sn-based PSCs via ligand engineering.

Highly oriented quasi-2D layered tin halide perovskites with 2-thiopheneethylammonium iodide for efficient and stable tin perovskite solar cells

Mixing of Azetidinium in Formamidinium Tin Triiodide Perovskite Solar Cells for Enhanced Photovoltaic Performance and High Stability in Air

Overcoming the issue of the stability of tin-based perovskites is a major challenge for the commercial development of lead-free perovskite solar cells. To attack this problem, a new organic cation, azetidinium (AZ), is incorporated into the crystal structure of formamidinium tin triiodide (FASnI₃ ) to form the mixed-cation perovskite AZ_x FA_1-x SnI₃ . As AZ has a similar size to FA but a larger dipole moment, hybrid AZ_x FA_1-x SnI₃ films exhibit variation in optical and electronic properties on increasing the proportion of AZ. Trifluoromethylbenzene (CF₃ C₆ H₅ ) serves as antisolvent to fabricate smooth and uniform perovskite films for the devices with an inverted planar heterojunction structure. The device performance is optimized to produce the greatest efficiency at x=0.15 (AZ15), for which a power conversion efficiency of 9.6 % is obtained when the unencapsulated AZ15 device is stored in air for 100 h. Moreover, the device retains 90 % of its initial efficiency for over 15 days. The significant performance and stability of this device reveal that the concept of mixed cations is a promising approach to stabilize tin-based perovskite solar cells for future commercialization.

Layered Perovskite Oxyiodide with Narrow Band Gap and Long Lifetime Carriers for Water Splitting Photocatalysis

The development of semiconductors with narrow band gap and high stability is crucial for achieving solar to chemical energy conversion. Compounds with iodine, which has a high polarizability, have attracted attention because of their narrow band gap and long carrier lifetime, as typified by halide perovskite solar cells; however, they have been regarded as unsuitable for harsh photocatalytic water splitting because iodine is prone to self-oxidation. Here, we demonstrate that Ba₂Bi₃Nb₂O₁₁I, a layered Sillén-Aurivillius oxyiodide, not only has access to a wider range of visible light than its chloride and bromide counterparts, but also functions as a stable photocatalyst, efficiently oxidizing water. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the oxygen 2p orbitals in the perovskite block, rather than the fluorite Bi₂O₂ block as previously pointed out, anomalously push up the valence band maximum, which can be explained by a modified Madelung potential analysis that takes into account the high polarizability of iodine. In addition, the highly polarizable iodide contributes to longer carrier lifetime of Ba₂Bi₃Nb₂O₁₁I, allowing for a significantly higher quantum efficiency than its chloride and bromide counterparts. Visible-light-driven Z-scheme water splitting was achieved for the first time in an iodine-based system using Ba₂Bi₃Nb₂O₁₁I as an oxygen-evolution photocatalyst. The present study provides a novel approach for incorporating polarizable "soft" anions into building blocks of layered materials to manipulate the band structure and improve the carrier dynamics for visible-light responsive functions.

Evaluation-oriented exploration of photo energy conversion systems: from fundamental optoelectronics and material screening to the combination with data science

Light is a form of energy that can be converted to electric and chemical energies. Thus, organic photovoltaics (OPVs), perovskite solar cells (PSCs), photocatalysts, and photodetectors have evolved as scientific and commercial enterprises. However, the complex photochemical reactions and multicomponent materials involved in these systems have hampered rapid progress in their fundamental understanding and material design. This review showcases the evaluation-oriented exploration of photo energy conversion materials by using electrodeless time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) and materials informatics (MI). TRMC with its unique options (excitation sources, environmental control, frequency modulation, etc.) provides not only accelerated experimental screening of OPV and PSC materials but also a versatile route toward shedding light on their charge carrier dynamics. Furthermore, MI powered by machine learning is shown to allow extremely high-throughput exploration in the large molecular space, which is compatible with experimental screening and combinatorial synthesis.
