Low-Temperature Vibrational Energy Transport via PEG Chains

Heat Transfer Enhancement in Tree-Structured Polymer Linked Gold Nanoparticle Networks

Human brains use a tree-like neuron network for information processing at high efficiency and low energy consumption. Tree-like structures have also been engineered to enhance mass and heat transfer in various applications. In this work, we reveal the heat transfer mechanism in tree-structured polymer linked gold nanoparticle (AuNP) networks using atomistic simulations. We report both upward and downward heat fluxes between root and leaf nodes in tree-structured polyethylene (PE) and poly(p-phenylene) (PPP) linked AuNP networks at tree levels from 1 to 5. We found that the heat conductance increases with an increasing polymer tree level. The heat transfer enhancement is due to the resulting increase in the low-frequency vibrational modes. This and other thermal properties are affected by the location of the AuNPs in the tree. Moreover, complex tree structures with at least five levels were found to be robust in the sense that disabling half of the leaves did not change the overall heat conductance.

Intramolecular Vibrational Energy Relaxation of CO2 in Cross-Linked Poly(ethylene glycol) Diacrylate-Based Ion Gels

Ultrafast two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D-IR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to measure carbon dioxide (CO₂) in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([emim][Tf₂N]), cross-linked low-molecular-weight poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), and an ion gel composed of a 50 vol % blend of the two. The center frequency of the antisymmetric stretch, ν₃, of CO₂ shifts monotonically to lower wavenumbers with increasing polymer content, with the largest line width in the ion gel (6 cm^-1). Increasing polymer content slows both spectral diffusion and vibrational energy relaxation (VER) rates. An unexpected excited-state absorbance peak appears in the 2D-IR of cross-linked PEGDA due to VER from the antisymmetric stretch into the bending mode, ν₂. Thirty-two response functions are necessary to describe the observed features in the 2D-IR spectra. Nonlinear least-squares fitting extracts both spectral diffusion and VER rates. In the ion gel, CO₂ exhibits spectral diffusion dynamics that lie between that of the pure compounds. The kinetics of VER reflect both fast excitation and de-excitation of the bending mode, similar to the ionic liquid (IL), and slow overall vibrational population relaxation, similar to the cross-linked polymer. The IL-like and polymer-like dynamics suggest that the CO₂ resides at the interface of the two components in the ion gel.

Crucial effect of transverse vibrations on the transport through polymer chains

The low temperature transport of electron, or vibrational or electronic exciton toward polymer chains, turns out to be dramatically sensitive to its interaction with transverse acoustic vibrations. We show that this interaction leads to a substantial polaron effect and decoherence, which are generally stronger than those associated with longitudinal vibrations. For site-dependent interactions, transverse phonons form subohmic bath leading to the quantum phase transition accompanied by full suppression of the transport at zero temperature and fast decoherence characterized by temperature dependent rate k₂ ∝ T^3/4 at low temperature, while k₂ ∝ T² for site-independent interactions. The latter dependence was used to interpret recent measurements of temperature dependent vibrational energy transport in polyethylene glycol oligomers.
