Efficient Photoexcited Charge Separation at the Interface of a Novel 0D/2D Heterojunction: A Time-Dependent Ultrafast Dynamic Study

Doping-mediated excited state dynamics of diphosphine-protected M@Au12 (M = Au, Ir) superatom nanoclusters

Doping heterometal atoms into ligand-protected gold superatom nanoclusters (Aun NCs) is proposed to further diversify their geometrical and electronic structures and enhance their photoluminescence properties, which is attributed to the mixing and effects between atoms. However, the fundamental principles that govern the optoelectronic properties of the doped Aun NCs remain elusive. Herein, we systematically explored two prototypical 8-electron Aun (n = 11 and 13) NCs with and without Ir dopant atoms using comprehensive ab initio calculations and real-time nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. These doped Aun NCs maintain their parent geometrical structures and 8-electron superatomic configuration (1S21P6). Strong core-shell (Ir-Aun) electronic coupling significantly expands the energy gap, resulting in a weak nonadiabatic coupling matrix element, which in turn increases the carrier lifetime. This increase is mainly governed by the low-frequency vibration mode. We uncovered the relationship between electronic structures, electron-vibration, and carrier dynamics for these doped Aun NCs. These calculated results provide crucial insights for the atomically precise design of metal NCs with superior optoelectronic properties.

Ab Initio Modeling of Mixed-Dimensional Heterostructures: A Path Forward

Understanding the electronic structure of mixed-dimensional heterostructures is essential for maximizing their application potential. However, accurately modeling such interfaces is challenging due to the complex interplay between the subsystems. We employ a computational framework integrating first-principles methods, including GW, density functional theory (DFT), and the polarizable continuum model, to elucidate the electronic structure of mixed-dimensional heterojunctions formed by free-base phthalocyanines and monolayer molybdenum disulfide. We assess the impact of dielectric screening across various scenarios, from isolated molecules to organic films on a substrate-supported monolayer. Our findings show that while polarization effects cause significant renormalization of molecular energy levels, band energies and alignments in the most relevant setup can be accurately predicted through DFT simulations of the individual subsystems. Additionally, we analyze orbital hybridization, revealing potential pathways for interfacial charge transfer. This study offers new insights into hybrid inorganic/organic interfaces and provides a practical computational protocol suitable for scaled-up studies.

The structure-activity relationship of copper hydride nanoclusters in hydrogenation and reduction reactions

Copper hydrides are highly active catalysts in hydrogenation reactions and reduction processes. Three Stryker-type copper hydride nanoclusters (NCs), [(TPP)CuH]6, [(TCP)CuH]6 and [(TOP)CuH]6 (TPP = triphenylphosphine, TCP = tricyclohexylphosphine and TOP = tri-n-octylphosphine), were synthesized in this study. Due to variations in the electron-donating properties of the phosphine ligands, the UV-visible absorption spectra of the three NCs exhibited notable distinctions. The influence of the phosphine ligands on the effectiveness of the NCs as hydride sources in hydrogenation processes, as well as on the applicability as homogeneous catalysts for reduction reactions, was systematically studied. Due to the highest electron-donating properties of the TOP ligand, [(TOP)CuH]6 was found to exhibit superior performance in both hydrogenation reactions and catalytic reduction reactions. Moreover, these hydrophobic NCs worked well as heterogeneous catalysts in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol.

Rational Design of Full-Color Fluorescent C3N Quantum Dots

Carbon-based quantum dots (QDs) exhibit unique photoluminescence due to size-dependent quantum confinement, giving rise to fascinating full-color emission properties. Accurate emission calculations using time-dependent density functional theory are a time-costing and expensive process. Herein, we employed an artificial neural network (ANN) combined with statistical learning to establish the relationship between geometrical/electronic structures of ground states and emission wavelength for C3N QDs. The emission energy of these QDs can be doubly modulated by size and edge effects, which are governed by the number of C4N2 rings and the CH group, respectively. Moreover, these two structural characteristics also determine the phonon vibration mode of C3N QDs to harmonize the emission intensity and lifetime of hot electrons in the electron-hole recombination process, as indicated by nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulation. These computational results provide a general approach to atomically precise design the full-color fluorescent carbon-based QDs with targeted functions and high performance.

Core-Packing-Related Vibrational Properties of Thiol-Protected Gold Nanoclusters and Their Excited-State Behavior

Thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters, with unique nuclearity- and structure-dependent properties, have been extensively used in energy conversion and catalysis; however, the mystery between kernel structures and properties remains to be revealed. Here, the influence of core packing on the electronic structure, vibrational properties, and excited-state dynamics of four gold nanoclusters with various kernel structures is explored using density functional theory combined with time-domain nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. We elucidate the correlation between the geometrical structure and excited-state dynamics of gold nanoclusters. The distinct carrier lifetimes of the four nanoclusters are attributed to various electron-phonon couplings arising from the different vibrational properties caused by core packing. We have identified specific phonon modes that participate in the electron-hole recombination dynamics, which are related to the gold core of nanoclusters. This study paints a physical picture from the geometric configuration, electronic structure, vibrational properties, and carrier lifetime of these nanoclusters, thereby facilitating their potential application in optoelectronic materials.

Tuning photoelectron dynamic behavior of thiolate-protected MAu24 nanoclusters via heteroatom substitution

Heteroatom substitution of gold nanoclusters enables precise tuning of their physicochemical properties at the single-atom level, which has a significant impact on the applications related to excited states including photovoltaics, photocatalysis and photo-luminescence. To this end, understanding the effect of metal exchange on the structures, electronic properties and photoexcited dynamic behavior of nanoclusters is imperative. Combining density functional theory with time-domain nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations, herein we explored the effect of metal replacement on the electronic and vibrational properties as well as excited-state dynamics of ligand-protected MAu₂₄(SR)₁₈ (M = Pd, Pt, Cd, and Hg) nanoclusters. At the atomistic level, we elucidate hot carrier relaxation and recombination dynamic behavior with various doping atoms. Such distinct excited-state behavior of MAu₂₄(SR)₁₈ nanoclusters is attributed to different energy gaps and electron-phonon coupling between the donor and acceptor energy levels, owing to the perturbation of nanoclusters by a single foreign atom. The specific phonon modes involved in excited-state dynamics have been identified, which are associated with the MAu₁₂ core and ligand rings. This time-dependent excited-state dynamic study fills the gap between structure/composition and excited-state dynamic behavior of MAu₂₄(SR)₁₈ nanoclusters, which would stimulate the exploration of their applications in photoenergy storage and conversion.

Enhancing the Photoinduced Interlayer Charge Transfer and Spatial Separation in Type-II Heterostructure of WS2 and Asymmetric Janus-MoSSe with Intrinsic Self-Build Electric Field

Two-dimensional heterostructure manipulation is promising to overcome the high recombination rates and limited redox abilities of photogenerated electron-hole pairs in a single photocatalyst. The built-in electric field (E_hetero) in the type-II heterojunction is normally unfavorable for the desired charge transfer, which is an important but easily neglected issue that needs to be solved. Here, on the basis of the density functional theory (DFT) and the nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) calculations, we obtain a type-II band alignment in Janus-MoSSe/WS₂ heterostructure, which meets the band-edge position requirement for water splitting. Importantly, the intrinsic self-build electric field (E_self) of Janus-MoSSe can effectively weaken the hindrance effect of E_hetero for charge transfer by constructing a suitable Se-S stacking configuration, improving charge separation efficiency in the Janus-MoSSe/WS₂ heterostructure. Our work provides a materials-by-design paradigm and interlayer charge-transfer dynamics understanding of heterostructure engineering against asymmetric structures lacking reflection symmetry.

Dual External Field-Engineered Hyperhalogen

Hyperhalogens, a superatom featuring the highest known electron affinity (EA), have promising applications in the synthesis of superoxidizers. Contributions regarding the identified numbers and corresponding design strategies of hyperhalogens, however, are scarce. Herein, a novel and noninvasive dual external field (DEF) strategy, including the ligand field and oriented external electric field (OEEF), is proposed to construct hyperhalogens. The DEF strategy was shown to possess the power to increase Au₈'s EA, forming the hyperhalogen. Strikingly, the ligation process can increase the cluster's stability, while OEEF can realize the precise and continuous regulation of the cluster's EA. Moreover, besides the model Au₈ system, an experimentally synthesized Ag₁₇ nanocluster was also investigated, further demonstrating the reliability of the proposed strategy. Considering the crucial role of ligands in the liquid synthesis of clusters and the convenient source of OEEF, such a DEF strategy may greatly increase the synthesis and applications of hyperhalogens in the condensed phase.

Inverse Design of Nanoclusters for Light-Controlled CO2-HCOOH Interconversion

With global push of hydrogen economy, efficient scenarios for hydrogen storage, transportation, and generation are indispensable. Here we devise a strategy for controllable hydrogen fuel storage and retrieval via light-switched CO₂-to-HCOOH interconversion. To realize it, palladium sulfide nanocluster catalysts with multiple specific functionalities are directly searched by our home-developed inverse design approach based on genetic algorithm (IDOGA) and ab initio calculations. Over 500 low-energy Pd_xS_y (x + y ≤ 30) clusters are sieved through a multiobjective function combining stability, activity, optical absorption, and reduction capability of photocarriers. The structure-property relationships and key factors governing the trade-off among these stringent criteria are disclosed. Finally, 14 candidate Pd_xS_y clusters with proper sulfidation degree and high stability in an aqueous environment have been screened. Our IDOGA program provides a general approach for inverse search of nanoclusters with any designated elemental compositions and functionalities for any device applications.

Universal Zigzag Edge Reconstruction of an α-Phase Puckered Monolayer and Its Resulting Robust Spatial Charge Separation

Edges are important, because they dictate the stability and properties of nanoribbons. Here, we reveal a universal reconstruction of the ZZ edge into a (2 × 1) tubed [ZZ(Tube)] edge, enabling an ultimate narrow nanotube to terminate nanoribbons for α-puckered group-V elemental and compound monolayers (GeS/Se and SnS/Se). The reconstructed edge formations are confirmed by CALYPSO. The ZZ(Tube) edge forms easily, is highly stable, and is semiconducting. Remarkably, the ZZ(Tube) edge always exhibits a type-II band structure and robust spatial charge separation. For a compound monolayer monochalcogenide, mild (2 × 1) ZZ(S-R) occurs at the chalcogenide-terminated edge. TDDFT simulations indicate that charge separation occurs only at 672 fs, while the lifetime is over 5 ns, thus facilitating robust spatial charge accumulation. These remarkable features of ZZ(Tube) edge-terminated α-puckered nanoribbons are ideal for optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications.
