Unlocking the Double Bond in Protonated Schiff Bases by Coherent Superposition of S1 and S2

Controlling Electronic Coherences and the Curvature Induced by the Derivative Coupling at a Conical Intersection: A Quantum Ehrenfest (QuEh) Protocol for Reaction Path Following Application to "Channel 3" Benzene Photochemistry

We report a protocol for the implementation of "reaction path following" from a transition state through a conical intersection, including both the path curvature induced by the derivative coupling and the corresponding induced electronic coherences. This protocol focuses on the "central" Gaussian wavepacket (initially unexcited) in the quantum Ehrenfest (QuEh) method. Like the reaction path following, the normal mode corresponding to the imaginary frequency at the transition state is given an initial momentum. The protocol is applied to the "channel 3" radiationless decay of benzene. We also demonstrate that one can enhance the effect of the derivative coupling and the electronic coherence with an IR pulse.

Ultrafast terahertz Stark spectroscopy reveals the excited-state dipole moments of retinal in bacteriorhodopsin

The photoinduced all-trans to 13-cis isomerization of the retinal Schiff base represents the ultrafast first step in the reaction cycle of bacteriorhodopsin (BR). Extensive experimental and theoretical work has addressed excited-state dynamics and isomerization via a conical intersection with the ground state. In conflicting molecular pictures, the excited state potential energy surface has been modeled as a pure S[Formula: see text] state that intersects with the ground state, or in a 3-state picture involving the S[Formula: see text] and S[Formula: see text] states. Here, the photoexcited system passes two crossing regions to return to the ground state. The electric dipole moment of the Schiff base in the S[Formula: see text] and S[Formula: see text] state differs strongly and, thus, its measurement allows for assessing the character of the excited-state potential. We apply the method of ultrafast terahertz (THz) Stark spectroscopy to measure electric dipole changes of wild-type BR and a BR D85T mutant upon electronic excitation. A fully reversible transient broadening and spectral shift of electronic absorption is induced by a picosecond THz field of several megavolts/cm and mapped by a 120-fs optical probe pulse. For both BR variants, we derive a moderate electric dipole change of 5 [Formula: see text] 1 Debye, which is markedly smaller than predicted for a neat S[Formula: see text]-character of the excited state. In contrast, S[Formula: see text]-admixture and temporal averaging of excited-state dynamics over the probe pulse duration gives a dipole change in line with experiment. Our results support a picture of electronic and nuclear dynamics governed by the interaction of S[Formula: see text] and S[Formula: see text] states in a 3-state model.

Recommendations for Velocity Adjustment in Surface Hopping

This study investigates velocity adjustment directions after hopping in surface hopping dynamics. Using fulvene and a protonated Schiff base (PSB4) as case studies, we investigate the population decay and reaction yields of different sets of dynamics with the velocity adjusted in either the nonadiabatic coupling, gradient difference, or momentum directions. For the latter, in addition to the conventional algorithm, we investigated the performance of a reduced kinetic energy reservoir approach recently proposed. Our evaluation also considered velocity adjustment in the directions of approximate nonadiabatic coupling vectors. While results for fulvene are susceptible to the adjustment approach, PSB4 is not. We correlated this dependence to the topography near the conical intersections. When nonadiabatic coupling vectors are unavailable, the gradient difference direction is the best adjustment option. If the gradient difference is also unavailable, a semiempirical vector direction or the momentum direction with a reduced kinetic energy reservoir becomes an excellent option to prevent an artificial excess of back hoppings. The precise velocity adjustment direction is less crucial for describing the nonadiabatic dynamics than the kinetic energy reservoir's size.

From a one-mode to a multi-mode understanding of conical intersection mediated ultrafast organic photochemical reactions

This review discusses how ultrafast organic photochemical reactions are controlled by conical intersections, highlighting that decay to the ground-state at multiple points of the intersection space results in their multi-mode character.

Quantum Interference Paves the Way for Long-Lived Electronic Coherences

The creation and dynamical fate of a coherent superposition of electronic states generated in a polyatomic molecule by broadband ionization with extreme ultraviolet pulses is studied using the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method together with an ionization continuum model Hamiltonian. The electronic coherence between the hole states usually lasts until the nuclear dynamics leads to decoherence. A key goal of attosecond science is to control the electronic motion and design laser control schemes to retain this coherence for longer timescales. Here, we investigate this possibility using time-delayed pulses and show how this opens up the prospect of coherent control of charge migration phenomenon.

Quantum-classical simulations of rhodopsin reveal excited-state population splitting and its effects on quantum efficiency

The activation of rhodopsin, the light-sensitive G-protein coupled receptor responsible for dim-light vision in vertebrates, is driven by an ultrafast excited-state double-bond isomerization with a quantum efficiency of almost 70%. The origin of such light sensitivity is not understood and a key question is whether in-phase nuclear motion controls the quantum efficiency value. Here, we use hundreds of quantum-classical trajectories to show that, 15 femtoseconds after light absorption, a degeneracy between the reactive excited state and a neighboring state causes the splitting of the rhodopsin population into subpopulations. These subpopulations propagate with different velocities and lead to distinct contributions to the quantum efficiency. We also show that such splitting is modulated by protein electrostatics, thus linking amino-acid sequence variations to quantum efficiency modulation. Finally, we discuss how such a linkage that in principle could be exploited to achieve higher quantum efficiencies, would simultaneously increase the receptor thermal noise leading to a trade-off that may have played a role in rhodopsin evolution.
