One-Shot Approach for Enforcing Piecewise Linearity on Hybrid Functionals: Application to Band Gap Predictions

High-Quality Data Enabling Universality of Band Gap Descriptor and Discovery of Photovoltaic Perovskites

Extensive machine-learning-assisted research has been dedicated to predicting band gaps for perovskites, driven by their immense potential in photovoltaics. Yet, the effectiveness is often hampered by the lack of high-quality band gap data sets, particularly for perovskites involving d orbitals. In this work, we consistently calculate a large data set of band gaps with a high level of accuracy, which is rigorously validated by experimental and state-of-the-art GW band gaps. Leveraging this achievement, our machine-learning-derived descriptor exhibits exceptional universality and robustness, proving effectiveness not only for single and double, halide and oxide perovskites regardless of the underlying atomic structures but also for hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites. With this approach, we comprehensively explore up to 15,659 materials, unveiling 14 unreported lead-free perovskites with suitable band gaps for photovoltaics. Notably, MASnBr3, FA2SnGeBr6, MA2AuAuBr6, FA2AuAuBr6, FA2InBiCl6, FA2InBiBr6, and Ba2InBiO6 stand out with direct band gaps, small effective masses, low exciton binding energies, and high stabilities.

Discovery of atomic clock-like spin defects in simple oxides from first principles

Virtually noiseless due to the scarcity of spinful nuclei in the lattice, simple oxides hold promise as hosts of solid-state spin qubits. However, no suitable spin defect has yet been found in these systems. Using high-throughput first-principles calculations, we predict spin defects in calcium oxide with electronic properties remarkably similar to those of the NV center in diamond. These defects are charged complexes where a dopant atom - Sb, Bi, or I - occupies the volume vacated by adjacent cation and anion vacancies. The predicted zero phonon line shows that the Bi complex emits in the telecommunication range, and the computed many-body energy levels suggest a viable optical cycle required for qubit initialization. Notably, the high-spin nucleus of each dopant strongly couples to the electron spin, leading to many controllable quantum levels and the emergence of atomic clock-like transitions that are well protected from environmental noise. Specifically, the Hanh-echo coherence time increases beyond seconds at the clock-like transition in the defect with 209Bi. Our results pave the way to designing quantum states with long coherence times in simple oxides, making them attractive platforms for quantum technologies.

Lessons Learned from Catalysis to Qubits: General Strategies to Build Accessible and Accurate First-Principles Models of Point Defects

Defects and dopants play critical roles in defining the properties of a material. Achieving a mechanistic understanding of how such properties arise is challenging with current experimental methods, and computational approaches suffer from significant modeling limitations that frequently require a posteriori fitting. Consequently, the pace of dopant discovery as a means of tuning material properties for a particular application has been slow. However, recent advances in computation have enabled researchers to move away from semiempirical schemes to reposition density functional theory as a predictive tool and improve the accessibility of highly accurate first-principles methods to all researchers. This Perspective discusses some of these recent achievements that provide more accurate first-principles geometric, thermodynamic, optical, and electronic properties simultaneously. Advancements related to supercells, basis sets, functionals, and optimization protocols, as well as suggestions for evaluating the quality of a computational model through comparison to experimental data, are discussed. Moreover, recent computational results in the fields of energy materials, heterogeneous catalysis, and quantum informatics are reviewed along with an evaluation of current frontiers and opportunities in the field of computational materials chemistry.

Many-Body Self-Interaction and Polarons

We address the many-body self-interaction in relation to polarons in density functional theory. Our study provides (i) a unified theoretical framework encompassing many-body and one-body forms of self-interaction and (ii) an efficient semilocal scheme for charge localization. Our theoretical formulation establishes a quantitative connection between the many-body and one-body forms of self-interaction in terms of electron screening, thereby conferring superiority to the concept of many-body self-interaction. Our semilocal methodology involves the use of a weak localized potential and applies equally to electron and hole polarons. We find that polarons free from many-body self-interaction have formation energies that are robust with respect to the functional adopted.

Solid-state performance of a meta-GGA screened hybrid density functional constructed from Pauli kinetic enhancement factor dependent semilocal exchange hole

The semilocal form of the exchange hole is highly useful in developing non-local range-separated hybrid density functionals for finite and extended systems. The way to construct the conventional exact exchange hole model is based on either the Taylor series expansion or the reverse engineering technique from the corresponding exchange energy functional. Although the latter technique is quite popular in context of generalized gradient approximation (GGA) functionals, the same for the meta-GGA functionals is not so much explored. Thus, in this study, we propose a reverse-engineered semilocal exchange hole of a meta-GGA functional, that depends only on the meta-GGA ingredient α (also known as the Pauli kinetic energy enhancement factor). The model is used subsequently to design the short-range-separated meta-GGA hybrid density functional. We show that the present method can be successfully applied for several challenging problems in the context of solids, especially for which the GGA based hybrid fails drastically. This assessment proves that the present functional is quite useful for materials sciences. Finally, we also use this method for several molecular test cases, where the results are also as comparative as its base semilocal functional.
