Charge Gradients around Dendritic Voids Cause Nanoscale Inhomogeneities in Liquid Water

Predicting the Geometry of Core-Shell Structures: How a Shape Changes with Constant Added Thickness

The core-shell assembly motif is ubiquitous in chemistry. While the most obvious examples are core/shell-type nanoparticles, many other examples exist. The shape of the core/shell constructs is poorly understood, making it impossible to separate chemical effects from geometric effects. Here, we create a model for the core/shell construct and develop proof for how the eccentricity is expected to change as a function of the shell. We find that the addition of a constant thickness shell always creates a relatively more spherical shape for all shapes covered by our model unless the shape is already spherical or has some underlying radial symmetry. We apply this work to simulated AOT reverse micelles and demonstrate that it is remarkably successful at explaining the observed shapes of the chemical systems. We identify the three specific cases where the model breaks down and how this impacts eccentricity.

Liquid Water: When Hyperpolarizability Fluctuations Boost and Reshape the Second Harmonic Scattering Intensities

Second harmonic scattering (SHS) is a method of choice to investigate the molecular structure of liquids. While a clear interpretation of SHS intensity exists for diluted solutions of dyes, the scattering due to solvents remains difficult to interpret quantitatively. Here, we report a quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approach to model the polarization-resolved SHS intensity of liquid water, quantifying different contributions to the signal. We point out that the molecular hyperpolarizability fluctuations and correlations cannot be neglected. The intermolecular orientational and hyperpolarizability correlations up to the third solvation layer strongly increase the scattering intensities and modulate the polarization-resolved oscillation that is predicted here by QM/MM without fitting parameters. Our approach can be generalized to other pure liquids to provide a quantitative interpretation of SHS intensities in terms of short-range molecular ordering.

Birth of the Hydrated Electron via Charge-Transfer-to-Solvent Excitation of Aqueous Iodide

A primary means to generate hydrated electrons in laboratory experiments is excitation to the charge-transfer-to-solvent (CTTS) state of a solute such as I^-(aq), but this initial step in the genesis of e^-(aq) has never been simulated directly using ab initio molecular dynamics. We report the first such simulations, combining ground- and excited-state simulations of I^-(aq) with a detailed analysis of fluctuations in the Coulomb potential experienced by the nascent solvated electron. What emerges is a two-step picture of the evolution of e^-(aq) starting from the CTTS state: I^-(aq) + hν → I^-*(aq) → I^•(aq) + e^-(aq). Notably, the equilibrated ground state of e^-(aq) evolves from I^-*(aq) without any nonadiabatic transitions, simply as a result of solvent reorganization. The methodology used here should be applicable to other photochemical electron transfer processes in solution, an important class of problems directly relevant to photocatalysis and energy transfer.
