Strong Anisotropic Optical Properties by Rolling up MoS2 Nanoflake

Nanoscrolls of Janus Monolayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Tubular structures of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have attracted attention in recent years due to their emergent physical properties, such as the giant bulk photovoltaic effect and chirality-dependent superconductivity. To understand and control these properties, it is highly desirable to develop a sophisticated method to fabricate TMDC tubular structures with smaller diameters and a more uniform crystalline orientation. For this purpose, the rolling up of TMDC monolayers into nanoscrolls is an attractive approach to fabricating such a tubular structure. However, the symmetric atomic arrangement of a monolayer TMDC generally makes its tubular structure energetically unstable due to considerable lattice strain in curved monolayers. Here, we report the fabrication of narrow nanoscrolls by using Janus TMDC monolayers, which have an out-of-plane asymmetric structure. Janus WSSe and MoSSe monolayers were prepared by the plasma-assisted surface atom substitution of WSe2 and MoSe2 monolayers, respectively, and then were rolled by solution treatment. The multilayer tubular structures of Janus nanoscrolls were revealed by scanning transmission electron microscopy observations. Atomic resolution elemental analysis confirmed that the Janus monolayers were rolled up with the Se-side surface on the outside. We found that the present nanoscrolls have the smallest diameter of about 5 nm, which is almost the same as the value predicted by the DFT calculation. The difference in work functions between the S- and Se-side surfaces was measured by Kelvin probe force microscopy, which is in good agreement with the theoretical prediction. Strong interlayer interactions and anisotropic optical responses of the Janus nanoscrolls were also revealed by Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy.

Recent Strategies for the Synthesis of Phase-Pure Ultrathin 1T/1T' Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Nanosheets

The past few decades have witnessed a notable increase in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) related research not only because of the large family of TMD candidates but also because of the various polytypes that arise from the monolayer configuration and layer stacking order. The peculiar physicochemical properties of TMD nanosheets enable an enormous range of applications from fundamental science to industrial technologies based on the preparation of high-quality TMDs. For polymorphic TMDs, the 1T/1T' phase is particularly intriguing because of the enriched density of states, and thus facilitates fruitful chemistry. Herein, we comprehensively discuss the most recent strategies for direct synthesis of phase-pure 1T/1T' TMD nanosheets such as mechanical exfoliation, chemical vapor deposition, wet chemical synthesis, atomic layer deposition, and more. We also review frequently adopted methods for phase engineering in TMD nanosheets ranging from chemical doping and alloying, to charge injection, and irradiation with optical or charged particle beams. Prior to the synthesis methods, we discuss the configuration of TMDs as well as the characterization tools mostly used in experiments. Finally, we discuss the current challenges and opportunities as well as emphasize the promising fields for the future development.

Transition Metal Dichalcogenides Nanoscrolls: Preparation and Applications

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) nanosheets have shown extensive applications due to their excellent physical and chemical properties. However, the low light absorption efficiency limits their application in optoelectronics. By rolling up 2D TMDCs nanosheets, the one-dimensional (1D) TMDCs nanoscrolls are formed with spiral tubular structure, tunable interlayer spacing, and opening ends. Due to the increased thickness of the scroll structure, the light absorption is enhanced. Meanwhile, the rapid electron transportation is confined along the 1D structure. Therefore, the TMDCs nanoscrolls show improved optoelectronic performance compared to 2D nanosheets. In addition, the high specific surface area and active edge site from the bending strain of the basal plane make them promising materials for catalytic reaction. Thus, the TMDCs nanoscrolls have attracted intensive attention in recent years. In this review, the structure of TMDCs nanoscrolls is first demonstrated and followed by various preparation methods of the TMDCs nanoscrolls. Afterwards, the applications of TMDCs nanoscrolls in the fields of photodetection, hydrogen evolution reaction, and gas sensing are discussed.

Optical axis-driven tunable Brewster effect in anisotropic materials

The Brewster effect, which is known as a notable physical law, has promising prospects in perfect absorption and angular selectivity transmission. The Brewster effect in isotropic materials has been investigated extensively in previous works. However, the research on anisotropic materials has been rarely carried out. In this work, we theoretically investigate the Brewster effect in quartz crystals with tilted optical axes. The conditions for the occurrence of the Brewster effect in anisotropic materials are derived. The numerical results show that by changing the orientation of the optical axis, we have effectively regulated the Brewster angle of crystal quartz. The reflection of crystal quartz versus the wavenumber and incidence angle at different tilted angles is studied. In addition, we discuss the effect of the hyperbolic region on the Brewster effect of crystal quartz. The Brewster angle negatively correlates with the tilted angle when the wavenumber is 460c m ^-1 (Type-II). In contrast, when the wavenumber is 540c m ^-1 (Type-I), the Brewster angle positively correlates with the tilted angle. Finally, the relationship between the Brewster angle and wavenumber at different tilted angles is investigated. The findings in this work will broaden the research field of crystal quartz and open the door for tunable Brewster devices based on anisotropic materials.
