Boosting the Self-Trapped Exciton Emission in Cs2NaYCl6 Double Perovskite Single Crystals and Nanocrystals

The luminescence modulation of rare earth-doped/containing lead-free double perovskites toward multifunctional applications: a review

Lead-free double perovskites (DPs) with superior environmental stability and high defect tolerance have attracted considerable attention and exhibit great promise in photodetectors, solar cells, lighting devices, etc. However, achieving optical modulation and high photoluminescence quantum yield using this kind of material remains a challenge. Rare earth ions feature abundant energy levels and outstanding photophysical properties. Incorporating rare earth ions into lead-free DPs is an effective strategy to improve their optical performances, which have great effects on night-vision and light emitting diodes. Consequently, in this mini-review, we summarize the synthesis methods, optical properties, issues, and multifunctional applications of lead-free DPs described in recent years. The performances of DPs can be modulated via rare earth doping, which involves the extension of luminescence range, the improvement of PLQY, the realization of multi-mode excitation, and the regulation of luminescence color. We hope that this review will provide some insights into luminescence modulation and applications of lead-free DPs.

Colloidal Synthesis of Hollow Double Perovskite Nanocrystals and Their Applications in X-ray Imaging

Rare earth-based halide double perovskites are regarded as an emerging class of X-ray scintillation materials. However, the majority of related scintillator applications are still focused on single crystal and powder systems; the application of nanocrystal (NC) scintillators is rarely reported. Here, we present the synthesis of high-purity Cs2NaTbCl6 NCs by an improved hot-injection method. Interestingly, hollow Cs2NaTbCl6 NCs are observed, the monitoring of the growth process indicates that micrometer-sized NaCl is the initial product, and then the NaCl would convert into Cs2NaTbCl6 NCs through the diffusion of Cs+ and Tb3+ into NaCl lattice, and the faster outward diffusion of Na+ results in the formation of hollow NCs. The double perovskite NCs exhibit green light emission, and the photoluminescence intensity can be significantly enhanced through Ce3+ doping. In particular, the Cs2NaTbCl6:5%Ce3+ scintillator exhibits a linear response and a low detection limit of 79.09 nGy/s when exposed to X-rays. Furthermore, a flexible scintillator film for X-ray imaging is prepared by mixing NCs with polymer, showing a high spatial resolution imaging capability of 10 lp/mm. This work provides a new strategy for hollow perovskite NCs and may shed light on the synthesis of related hollow NCs and their applications in X-ray detection.

Unveiling Sb3+ Doping and Tricolor Luminescence from Intrinsic Self-Trapped Excitons in Cs2ZnCl4 Crystals

Zero-dimensional (0D) lead-free halide perovskites have lately received significant interest owing to their captivating broadband emissions. An in-depth understanding of the luminescence mechanism of self-trapped excitons (STEs) and realization of effective regulation of luminescence properties have become a major challenge in the research of lead-free metal halides. Herein, we have synthesized the Cs2ZnCl4 and Sb3+-doped Cs2ZnCl4 crystals and conducted a comprehensive investigation into their distinct electronic structures and optical characteristics. The findings from both experimental and theoretical investigations indicate that the tricolor luminescence in Cs2ZnCl4 and blue emission in Sb3+-doped Cs2ZnCl4 stem from intrinsic STEs, and the near-infrared emission originates from extrinsic STEs associated with the Sb3+ ion in Sb3+-doped Cs2ZnCl4. Sb3+ doping increases the quantum yield of Cs2ZnCl4 to a large extent. In addition, intersystem crossing, exciton self-trapping, and lattice relaxation are the main reasons for the large Stokes shift. The present study is expected to provide a novel perspective for researchers in comprehending the luminescent mechanism of STEs and advancing the utilization of 0D lead-free metal halides in optoelectronic applications.

Near-Unity Green Luminescent Hybrid Manganese Halides as X-ray Scintillators

The increasing demands in optoelectronic applications have driven the advancement of organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides (OIMHs), owing to their exceptional optical and scintillation properties. Among them, zero-dimensional (0D) low-toxic manganese-based scintillators have garnered significant interest due to their exceptional optical transparency and elevated photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs), making them promising for colorful light-emitting diodes and X-ray imaging applications. In this study, two OIMH single crystals of (Br-PrTPP)2MnBr4 (Br-PrTPP = (3-bromopropyl) triphenylphosphonium) and (Br-BuTPP)2MnBr4 (Br-BuTPP = (4-bromobutyl) triphenylphosphonium) were prepared via a facile saturated crystallization method. Benefiting from the tetrahedrally coordinated [MnBr4]2- polyhedron, both of them exhibited strong green emissions peaked at 517 nm owing to the d-d electron transition of Mn2+ with near-unity PLQYs of 99.33 and 86.85%, respectively. Moreover, benefiting from the high optical transparencies and remarkable luminescence properties, these manganese halides also exhibit excellent radioluminescent performance with the highest light yield of up to 68,000 photons MeV-1, negligible afterglow (0.4 ms), and linear response to X-ray dose rate with the lowest detection limit of 45 nGyair s-1. In X-ray imaging, the flexible film made by the composite of (Br-PrTPP)2MnBr4 and PDMS shows an ultrahigh spatial resolution of 12.78 lp mm-1, which provides a potential visualization tool for X-ray radiography.

Mapping Uncharted Lead-Free Halide Perovskites and Related Low-Dimensional Structures

Research on perovskites has grown exponentially in the past decade due to the potential of methyl ammonium lead iodide in photovoltaics. Although these devices have achieved remarkable and competitive power conversion efficiency, concerns have been raised regarding the toxicity of lead and its impact on scaling up the technology. Eliminating lead while conserving the performance of photovoltaic devices is a great challenge. To achieve this goal, the research has been expanded to thousands of compounds with similar or loosely related crystal structures and compositions. Some materials are "re-discovered", and some are yet unexplored, but predictions suggest that their potential applications may go beyond photovoltaics, for example, spintronics, photodetection, photocatalysis, and many other areas. This short review aims to present the classification, some current mapping strategies, and advances of lead-free halide double perovskites, their derivatives, lead-free perovskitoid, and low-dimensional related crystals.

Configuration-mediated excited-state energy dissipation in metal-bridged dimeric D-A fluorophores for enhanced photothermal therapy

Photothermal agents (PTAs) based on donor (D)-acceptor (A) NIR fluorophores show great promise in photothermal therapy due to their accessible molecular engineering to mediate excitation energy for high photothermal conversion. Except for molecular structural modification of D-A fluorophores, intermolecular arrangement in space greatly influences their excitation energy dissipation as well. But how to mediate their intermolecular arrangement is still challenging. Here we control the intermolecular orientation of chromophores via metal coordination to form Pt-bridged dimeric D-A fluorophores with different geometries. The formed configuration isomers show different intermolecular exciton coupling behaviors involving charge transfer (CT) evolution and internally limited molecular rotation, which greatly affect excited-energy dissipation. Compared with folded configuration with intense NIR emission (quantum yields (QYs) = 15.62 %), linear configuration favors non-radiative decays with low QYs (6.99 %) but enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE = 41.57 %). The self-assembled nanoparticles combining Pt-bridged dimeric D-A fluorophores with DSPE-PEG2000-RGD reveal superior photothermal therapeutic features with desirable biosafety. This research provides a new designing concept to mediate excited-state energy dissipation pathways at a sub-nano level for enhanced photothermal conversion. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: D-A fluorophores as photothermal agents attract great attention in photothermal therapy due to their accessible molecular engineering. Besides molecular engineering of D-A fluorophores, the intermolecular packing manner is proven to greatly affect their excitation energy dissipation. But how to control intermolecular arrangement is still challenging. Here we control the intermolecular orientation of chromophores via metal coordination to form Pt-bridged dimeric D-A fluorophores with different geometries. Compared to the folded configuration, linear configuration facilitates charge transfer (CT) evolution and molecular rotation, which promotes non-radiative decays of excited energy for enhanced photothermal therapy.

Tunable dual-emission of Sb3+, Ho3+Co-doped Cs2NaScCl6single crystals for light-emitting diodes

Lead-free halide double perovskites are considered as one of the most promising materials in optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells, photodetectors, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs), due to their environmental friendliness and chemical stability. However, the extremely low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of self-trapped excitons (STEs) emission from lead-free halide double perovskites impedes their applications. Herein, Sb3+ions were doped into rare-earth-based double perovskite Cs2NaScCl6single crystals (SCs), resulting in a large enhancement of PLQY from 12.57% to 87.37%. Moreover, by co-doping Sb3+and Ho3+into Cs2NaScCl6SCs, the emission color can be tuned from blue to red, due to an efficient energy transfer from STEs to Ho3+ions. Finally, the synthesized sample was used in multicolor LED, which exhibited excellent stability and optical properties. This work not only provides a new strategy for improving the optical properties of Cs2NaScCl6SCs, but also suggests its potential application in multicolor LEDs.

Achieving Enhanced Visible-Near-Infrared Light Absorption in Stable Lead-Free Vanadium-Based Perovskite Nanocrystals via Structural Regulation

Lead-free halide perovskites are promising materials for solar energy applications. However, their efficiency is hindered by poor light absorption in the visible-near-infrared region. Herein, we introduce vanadium (V) with low-lying ground/excited-state energy levels to form two types of stable lead-free V-based perovskite (Cs2NaVCl6 and Cs3V2Cl9) colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) with strong light absorption covering the ultraviolet to near-infrared region. We find the absorption can be further enhanced by structural regulation, in which the zero-dimensional (0D) Cs3V2Cl9 NCs show stronger and red-shifted (up to 1400 nm) light absorption compared to the three-dimensional Cs2NaVCl6 NCs. In 0D Cs3V2Cl9 NCs, [V2Cl9]3- dimers play a vital role in governing strong visible-near-infrared light absorption. We demonstrated their application for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Our work sheds light on the structure-property relationship governing the absorption behavior, providing a novel route for tuning the light absorption ability of lead-free halide perovskites.

Achieving Broadband NIR-I to NIR-II Emission in an All-Inorganic Halide Double-Perovskite Cs2NaYCl6:Cr3+ Phosphor for Night Vision Imaging

Near-infrared phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs) offer numerous advantages, including compact size, tunable emission spectra, energy efficiency, and high integration potential. These features make them highly promising for various applications, such as night vision monitoring, food safety inspection, biomedical imaging, and theragnostics. All-inorganic halide double-perovskite materials, known for their large absorption cross section, excellent defect tolerance, and long carrier diffusion radius, serve as unique matrices for constructing near-infrared fluorescent materials. In this study, we successfully prepared the all-inorganic metal halide double-perovskite Cs2NaYCl6:Cr3+ using a grinding-sintering method. A small fraction of the [YCl6] octahedra within the host material's lattice was substituted with Cr3+ ions, resulting in the creation of the Cs2NaYCl6:Cr3+ phosphor. When excited with λ = 310 nm UV light, the phosphor exhibited a broad emission range spanning from 800 to 1400 nm, covering the NIR-I and NIR-II regions. It had a broad bandwidth emission of 185 nm and achieved a fluorescence quantum yield of 20.2%. The unique broadband emission of the phosphor originates from the weak crystal field environment provided by the Cs2NaYCl6 host matrix, which enhances the luminescence properties of the Cr3+ ions. To create NIR pc-LEDs, the phosphor was encapsulated onto a commercially available UV LED chip operating at 310 nm. The potential application of these NIR pc-LEDs in night vision imaging was successfully validated.

Effect of the Host Lattice Environment on the Expression of 5s2 Lone-Pair Electrons in a 0D Bismuth-Based Metal Halide

ns²-Metal halide perovskites have attracted wide attention due to their fascinating photophysical properties. However, achieving high photoluminescence (PL) properties is still an enormous challenge, and the relationship between the lattice environment and ns²-electron expression is still elusive. Herein, an organic-inorganic Bi³⁺-based halide (C₅H₁₄N₂)₂BiCl₆·Cl·2H₂O (C₅H₁₄N₂²⁺ = doubly protonated 1-methylpiperazine) with a six-coordinated structure has been successfully prepared, which, however, exhibits inferior PL properties due to the chemically inert expression of Bi³⁺-6s² lone-pair electrons. After reasonably embedding Sb³⁺ with 5s² electrons into the lattice of (C₅H₁₄N₂)₂BiCl₆·Cl·2H₂O, the host lattice environment induces the Sb-Cl moiety to change from the original five-coordinated to six-coordinated structure, thereby resulting in a broad-band yellow emission with a PL efficiency up to 50.75%. By utilizing the host lattice of (C₅H₁₄N₂)₂BiCl₆·Cl·2H₂O, the expression of Sb³⁺-5s² lone-pair electrons is improved and thus promotes the radiative recombination from the Sb³⁺-³P₁ state, resulting in the enhanced PL efficiency. This work will provide an in-depth insight into the effect of the local structure on the expression of Sb³⁺-5s² lone-pair electrons.

Doping/Alloying Pathways to Lead-Free Halide Perovskites with Ultimate Photoluminescence Quantum Yields

Tailored modifications of halide lead-free perovskites (LFPs) via doping/alloying with metal cations have been recognized as a promising pathway to highly efficient inorganic phosphors with photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields of up to 100 %. Such materials typically display selective sensitivity to UV light, a broad PL range, and long PL lifetimes as well as a unique compositional variability and stability-an ideal combination for many light-harvesting applications. This Minireview presents the state-of-the-art in doped LFPs, focusing on the reports published mostly in the last two to three years. We discuss the factors determining the efficiency and spectral parameters of the broadband PL of doped LFPs depending on the dopant and host matrix, both in micro- and nanocrystalline states, address the most relevant challenges this rapidly developing research area is facing, and outline the most promising concepts for further progress in this field.
