Comparative Study of Covalent and van der Waals CdS Quantum Dot Assemblies from Many-Body Perturbation Theory

CdS Quantum Dot Gels as a Direct Hydrogen Atom Transfer Photocatalyst for C-H Activation

Here, we report CdS quantum dot (QD) gels, a three-dimensional network of interconnected CdS QDs, as a new type of direct hydrogen atom transfer (d-HAT) photocatalyst for C-H activation. We discovered that the photoexcited CdS QD gel could generate various neutral radicals, including α-amido, heterocyclic, acyl, and benzylic radicals, from their corresponding stable molecular substrates, including amides, thio/ethers, aldehydes, and benzylic compounds. Its C-H activation ability imparts a broad substrate and reaction scope. The mechanistic study reveals that this reactivity is intrinsic to CdS materials, and the neutral radical generation did not proceed via the conventional sequential electron transfer and proton transfer pathway. Instead, the C-H bonds are activated by the photoexcited CdS QD gel via a d-HAT mechanism. This d-HAT mechanism is supported by the linear correlation between the logarithm of the C-H bond activation rate constant and the C-H bond dissociation energy (BDE) with a Brønsted slope α=0.5. Our findings expand the currently limited direct hydrogen atom transfer photocatalysis toolbox and provide new possibilities for photocatalytic C-H activation.

Reduction reactions at the interface between CdS quantum dot and Z-type ligands driven by electron injection in the electroluminescent processes

The efficient and stable electroluminescence of quantum dots (QDs) is of great importance in their applications in new display technologies. The short service life of blue QDs, however, hinders their development and commercialization. Different mechanisms have been proposed for the destabilization of QDs in electroluminescent processes. Based on real-time time-dependent density functional theory studies on the QD models covered by Z-type ligands (XAc2, X = Cd, Zn, Mg), the structural evolution is simulated to reveal the mechanism of the reduction reactions induced by electron injection. Our simulations reproduce the experimental observations that the reduction reactions occur at the QD-ligand interface, and the reduced Cd atom is almost in a zero valence state. However, different sites are predicted for the reactions in which the surface metal atom of the QD instead of the metal atom in the ligands is reduced. As a result, one of the arms of the chelate ligand leaves the QD, which tends to cause damage to its electroluminescent performance. Our findings contribute to a mechanistic understanding of the reduction reactions that occurred at the QD-ligand interface.

Generalized Substrate Screening GW for Covalently Bonded Interfaces

An accurate description of the interfacial quasiparticle electronic structure is key to the design of heterogeneous materials. While the first-principles GW approach is state-of-the-art, the computational cost is high for large interface systems. This has led to the substrate screening GW approach for weakly coupled interfaces, which breaks down for covalently bonded interfaces. In this work, we present the generalized substrate screening GW approach, based on the following two considerations: (i) the contribution of the interfacial covalent bond to the polarizability can be efficiently calculated with a low energy cutoff; (ii) the contribution of the deprotonated adsorbate to the interface polarizability can be well approximated by that of the protonated molecule. Our approach is exemplified using interfaces formed between benzene-1,4-dithiol (BDT) and Au(111), which feature the widely used Au-S bonds in experiments. Our work provides a robust and simple scheme for accurate and efficient GW calculations of covalently bonded interfaces.
