Changing Hydrogen-Bond Structure during an Aqueous Liquid-Liquid Transition Investigated with Time-Resolved and Two-Dimensional Vibrational Spectroscopy

Impact of molecular symmetry on crystallization pathways in highly supersaturated KH2PO4 solutions

Solute structure and its evolution in supersaturated aqueous solutions are key clues to understand Ostwald's step rule. Here, we measure the structural evolution of solute molecules in highly supersaturated solutions of KH2PO4 (KDP) and NH4H2PO4 (ADP) using a combination of electrostatic levitation and synchrotron X-ray scattering. The measurement reveals the existence of a solution-solution transition in KDP solution, caused by changing molecular symmetries and structural evolution of the solution with supersaturation. Moreover, we find that the molecular symmetry of H2PO4- impacts on phase selection. These findings manifest that molecular symmetry and its structural evolution can govern the crystallization pathways in aqueous solutions, explaining the microscopic origin of Ostwald's step rule.

Tuning the low-temperature phase behavior of aqueous ionic liquids

Water's anomalous behavior is often explained using a two-liquid model, where two types of water, high-density liquid (HDL) and low-density liquid (LDL), can be separated via a liquid-liquid phase transition (LLPT) at low temperature. Mixtures of water and the ionic liquid hydrazinium trifluoroacetate were suggested to also show an LLPT but with the advantage that there is no rapid ice crystallization hampering its observation. It remains controversial whether these solutions exhibit an LLPT or are instead associated with complex phase separation phenomena. We here show detailed low-temperature calorimetry and diffraction experiments on aqueous solutions containing hydrazinium trifluoroacetate and other similar ionic liquids, all at a solute mole fraction of x = 0.175. Hydrazinium trifluoroacetate, ammonium trifluoroacetate, ethylammonium trifluoroacetate and hydrazinium pentafluoropropionate all boast exothermic transitions unrelated to crystallization as well as remarkable structural changes upon cooling into the glassy state. We propose a model inspired by micelle formation and decomposition in surfactant solutions, which is complemented by MD simulations and allows rationalizing the rich phase behavior of our mixtures during cooling. The fundamental aspect of the model is the hydrophobic nature of fluorinated anions that enables aggregation, which is reversed upon cooling and culminates in the remarkable exothermic first-order transition observed at low temperature. That is, we assign the first-order transition not to an LLPT but to phase-separations similar to the ones when falling below the Krafft temperature. All other solutions merely show simple vitrification behavior. Still, they exhibit distinct differences in liquid fragility, which is decreased continuously with decreasing hydrophobicity of the anions. This might enable the systematic tuning of ionic liquids with the goal of designing aqueous solutions of specific fragility.

Dynamic Heterogeneity and Kovacs' Memory Effects in Supercooled Water

Understanding the properties of supercooled water is important for developing a comprehensive theory for liquid water and amorphous ices. Because of rapid crystallization for deeply supercooled water, experiments on it are typically carried out under conditions in which the temperature and/or pressure are rapidly changing. As a result, information on the structural relaxation kinetics of supercooled water as it approaches (metastable) equilibrium is useful for interpreting results obtained in this experimentally challenging region of phase space. We used infrared spectroscopy and the fast time resolution obtained by transiently heating nanoscale water films to investigate relaxation kinetics (aging) in supercooled water. When the structural relaxation of the water films was followed using a temperature jump protocol analogous to the classic experiments of Kovacs, similar memory effects were observed. In particular, after suitable aging at one temperature, water's structure displayed an extremum versus the number of heat pulses upon changing to a second temperature before eventually relaxing to a steady-state structure characteristic of that temperature. A random double well model based on the idea of dynamic heterogeneity in supercooled water accounts for the observations.

Interplay of vitrification and ice formation in a cryoprotectant aqueous solution at low temperature

Studying water crystallization at low temperature and the lower limit of ice formation is crucial both for a fundamental understanding of water and for practical reasons such as cryopreservation. By taking advantage of the polarized neutron scattering technique and by considering a nanosegregated water–glycerol solution, we are able to characterize the key parameters of ice formation at temperatures near and below the calorimetric glass transition of the solution and provide a general rule for estimating the lower temperature limit of water crystallization in a broad range of aqueous solutions. We also show that nanosegregated water in the glassy solution at low temperature is not in a high-density form but in a low-density one.

The proneness of water to crystallize is a major obstacle to understanding its putative exotic behavior in the supercooled state. It also represents a strong practical limitation to cryopreservation of biological systems. Adding some concentration of glycerol, which has a cryoprotective effect preventing, to some degree, water crystallization, has been proposed as a possible way out, provided the concentration is small enough for water to retain some of its bulk character and/or for limiting the damage caused by glycerol on living organisms. Contrary to previous expectations, we show that, in the “marginal” glycerol molar concentration ≈ 18%, at which vitrification is possible with no crystallization on rapid cooling, water crystallizes upon isothermal annealing even below the calorimetric glass transition of the solution. Through a time-resolved polarized neutron scattering investigation, we extract key parameters, size and shape of the ice crystallites, fraction of water that crystallizes, and crystallization time, which are important for cryoprotection, as a function of the annealing temperature. We also characterize the nature of the out-of-equilibrium liquid phases that are present at low temperature, providing more arguments against the presence of an isocompositional liquid–liquid transition. Finally, we propose a rule of thumb to estimate the lower temperature limit below which water crystallization does not occur in aqueous solutions.

Recent Progress and Prospects in Catalytic Water Treatment

Presently, conventional technologies in water treatment are not efficient enough to completely mineralize refractory water contaminants. In this context, the implementation of catalytic processes could be an alternative. Despite the advantages provided in terms of kinetics of transformation, selectivity, and energy saving, numerous attempts have not yet led to implementation at an industrial scale. This review examines investigations at different scales for which controversies and limitations must be solved to bridge the gap between fundamentals and practical developments. Particular attention has been paid to the development of solar-driven catalytic technologies and some other emerging processes, such as microwave assisted catalysis, plasma-catalytic processes, or biocatalytic remediation, taking into account their specific advantages and the drawbacks. Challenges for which a better understanding related to the complexity of the systems and the coexistence of various solid-liquid-gas interfaces have been identified.

Ultrafast Structure and Vibrational Dynamics of a Cyano-Containing Non-Fullerene Acceptor for Organic Solar Cells Revealed by Two-Dimensional Infrared Spectroscopy

Non-fullerene molecules, such as ITIC (3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene) indanone)-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)dithieno[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']-dithiophene), are among the most promising non-fullerene acceptors for organic solar cells (OSCs). In this work, using the cyano stretching mode as a vibrational marker, the structural and vibrational energy dynamics of ITIC were examined on an ultrafast time scale with two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy. Two IR-active modes studied here mainly correspond to two anti-symmetric combinations of symmetric and asymmetric stretching vibrations of two C≡N modes originating from two -C(CN)₂ chromophores that are located across the ITIC system, which were found to have significantly larger off-diagonal anharmonicity than their corresponding diagonal anharmonicities. This indicates strong anharmonic vibrational coupling between the two modes, which is supported by ab initio anharmonic frequency computations. Transient IR results indicate picosecond intramolecular vibrational energy transfer between the two C≡N modes upon excitation. The structural basis for these vibrational and energetic features is the conjugating molecular frame that is composed of a network of single/double bonds connecting the two -C(CN)₂ chromophores and may enable efficient vibration delocalization, in addition to its well-known electron delocalization capability. The importance of the results for the OSC applications is discussed.

Lifetime-Associated Two-Dimensional Infrared Spectroscopy Reveals the Hydrogen-Bond Structure of Supercooled Water in Soft Confinement

We demonstrate a method to address the problem of spectral overlap in multidimensional vibrational spectroscopy and use it to investigate supercooled aqueous sorbitol solutions. The absence of crystallization in these solutions has been attributed to "soft" confinement of water in subnanometer voids in the sorbitol matrix, but the details of the hydrogen-bond structure are still largely unknown. 2D-IR spectroscopy of the OH-stretch mode is an excellent tool to investigate hydrogen bonding, but in this case it seems difficult because of the overlapping water and sorbitol contributions to the 2D-IR spectrum. Using the difference in OH-stretch lifetimes of water and sorbitol we can cleanly separate these contributions. Surprisingly, the separated 2D-IR spectra show that the hydrogen-bond disorder of soft-confined water is independent of temperature and decoupled from its orientational order. We believe the approach we use to separate overlapping 2D-IR spectra will enhance the applicability of 2D-IR spectroscopy to study multicomponent systems.

Experimental observation of nanophase segregation in aqueous salt solutions around the predicted liquid-liquid transition in water

The liquid-liquid transition in supercooled liquid water, predicted to occur around 220 K, is controversial due to the difficulty of studying it caused by competition from ice crystallization (the so-called "no man's land"). In aqueous solutions, it has been predicted to give rise to phase separation on a nanometer scale between a solute-rich high-density phase and a water-rich low-density phase. Here we report direct experimental evidence for the formation of a nanosegregated phase in eutectic aqueous solutions of LiCl and LiSCN where the presence of crystalline water can be experimentally excluded. Femtosecond infrared and Raman spectroscopies are used to determine the temperature-dependent structuring of water, the solvation of the SCN^- anion, and the size of the phase segregated domains.

Glass polymorphism and liquid-liquid phase transition in aqueous solutions: experiments and computer simulations

One of the most intriguing anomalies of water is its ability to exist as distinct amorphous ice forms (glass polymorphism or polyamorphism). This resonates well with the possible first-order liquid-liquid phase transition (LLPT) in the supercooled state, where ice is the stable phase. In this Perspective, we review experiments and computer simulations that search for LLPT and polyamorphism in aqueous solutions containing salts and alcohols. Most studies on ionic solutes are devoted to NaCl and LiCl; studies on alcohols have mainly focused on glycerol. Less attention has been paid to protein solutions and hydrophobic solutes, even though they reveal promising avenues. While all solutions show polyamorphism and an LLPT only in dilute, sub-eutectic mixtures, there are differences regarding the nature of the transition. Isocompositional transitions for varying mole fractions are observed in alcohol but not in ionic solutions. This is because water can surround alcohol molecules either in a low- or high-density configuration whereas for ionic solutes, the water ion hydration shell is forced into high-density structures. Consequently, the polyamorphic transition and the LLPT are prevented near the ions, but take place in patches of water within the solutions. We highlight discrepancies and different interpretations within the experimental community as well as the key challenges that need consideration when comparing experiments and simulations. We point out where reinterpretation of past studies helps to draw a unified, consistent picture. In addition to the literature review, we provide original experimental results. A list of eleven open questions that need further consideration is identified.

Intensified C≡C Stretching Vibrator and Its Potential Role in Monitoring Ultrafast Energy Transfer in 2D Carbon Material by Nonlinear Vibrational Spectroscopy

In this work, an intensity-enhanced C≡C stretching infrared (IR) absorption is observed in hexakis[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]benzene (HTEB), whose IR transition dipole magnitude becomes comparable to that of a typical C═O stretch, and the enhancement is believed to be due to a joint effect of π-π conjugation and hyperconjugation associated with a terminal trimethylsilyl group. Using dynamical time-dependent two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectroscopy, a picosecond intramolecular energy redistribution process is observed between two nondegenerate C≡C stretching modes, whose symmetry breaking is attributed to a noncovalent halogen-bonding interaction between HTEB and solvent CH₂Cl₂. The rigid structure of HTEB and limited structural dynamics are also inferred from the insignificant initial spectral diffusion value extracted from the 2D IR spectra. This work provides the first nonlinear infrared investigation of the conventionally weak C≡C stretch. The methods outlined are particularly important for detailed understanding of the structure-related processes such as vibrational energy transfer in novel C≡C species containing materials such as graphdiyne.

Water: A Tale of Two Liquids

Water is the most abundant liquid on earth and also the substance with the largest number of anomalies in its properties. It is a prerequisite for life and as such a most important subject of current research in chemical physics and physical chemistry. In spite of its simplicity as a liquid, it has an enormously rich phase diagram where different types of ices, amorphous phases, and anomalies disclose a path that points to unique thermodynamics of its supercooled liquid state that still hides many unraveled secrets. In this review we describe the behavior of water in the regime from ambient conditions to the deeply supercooled region. The review describes simulations and experiments on this anomalous liquid. Several scenarios have been proposed to explain the anomalous properties that become strongly enhanced in the supercooled region. Among those, the second critical-point scenario has been investigated extensively, and at present most experimental evidence point to this scenario. Starting from very low temperatures, a coexistence line between a high-density amorphous phase and a low-density amorphous phase would continue in a coexistence line between a high-density and a low-density liquid phase terminating in a liquid–liquid critical point, LLCP. On approaching this LLCP from the one-phase region, a crossover in thermodynamics and dynamics can be found. This is discussed based on a picture of a temperature-dependent balance between a high-density liquid and a low-density liquid favored by, respectively, entropy and enthalpy, leading to a consistent picture of the thermodynamics of bulk water. Ice nucleation is also discussed, since this is what severely impedes experimental investigation of the vicinity of the proposed LLCP. Experimental investigation of stretched water, i.e., water at negative pressure, gives access to a different regime of the complex water diagram. Different ways to inhibit crystallization through confinement and aqueous solutions are discussed through results from experiments and simulations using the most sophisticated and advanced techniques. These findings represent tiles of a global picture that still needs to be completed. Some of the possible experimental lines of research that are essential to complete this picture are explored.
