Diabat method for polymorph free energies: Extension to molecular crystals

Lattice-switch Monte Carlo and the related diabat methods have emerged as efficient and accurate ways to compute free energy differences between polymorphs. In this work, we introduce a one-to-one mapping from the reference positions and displacements in one molecular crystal to the positions and displacements in another. Two features of the mapping facilitate lattice-switch Monte Carlo and related diabat methods for computing polymorph free energy differences. First, the mapping is unitary so that its Jacobian does not complicate the free energy calculations. Second, the mapping is easily implemented for molecular crystals of arbitrary complexity. We demonstrate the mapping by computing free energy differences between polymorphs of benzene and carbamazepine. Free energy calculations for thermodynamic cycles, each involving three independently computed polymorph free energy differences, all return to the starting free energy with a high degree of precision. The calculations thus provide a force field independent validation of the method and allow us to estimate the precision of the individual free energy differences.

Extrapolation and interpolation strategies for efficiently estimating structural observables as a function of temperature and density

Thermodynamic extrapolation has previously been used to predict arbitrary structural observables in molecular simulations at temperatures (or relative chemical potentials in open-system mixtures) different from those at which the simulation was performed. This greatly reduces the computational cost in mapping out phase and structural transitions. In this work, we explore the limitations and accuracy of thermodynamic extrapolation applied to water, where qualitative shifts from anomalous to simple-fluid-like behavior are manifested through shifts in the liquid structure that occur as a function of both temperature and density. We present formulas for extrapolating in volume for canonical ensembles and demonstrate that linear extrapolations of water's structural properties are only accurate over a limited density range. On the other hand, linear extrapolation in temperature can be accurate across the entire liquid state. We contrast these extrapolations with classical perturbation theory techniques, which are more conservative and slowly converging. Indeed, we show that such behavior is expected by demonstrating exact relationships between extrapolation of free energies and well-known techniques to predict free energy differences. An ideal gas in an external field is also studied to more clearly explain these results for a toy system with fully analytical solutions. We also present a recursive interpolation strategy for predicting arbitrary structural properties of molecular fluids over a predefined range of state conditions, demonstrating its success in mapping qualitative shifts in water structure with density.

Gibbs free-energy differences between polymorphs via a diabat approach

Polymorph free-energy differences are critical to several applications. A recently proposed diabat interpolation framework estimated free-energy differences between polymorphs by quadratic interpolation of diabats. This work extends the Zwanzig-Bennett relation to the NPT ensemble so that the diabats directly give Gibbs free-energy differences. We also demonstrate how the approach can be used in cases where the diabats are not parabolic. We illustrate the diabat method for Gibbs free-energy difference of zirconium (BCC and HCP phases) and compare it with the conventional lattice switch Monte Carlo approach.

Evaluation of General and Tailor Made Force Fields via X-ray Thermal Diffuse Scattering Using Molecular Dynamics and Monte Carlo Simulations of Crystalline Aspirin

We have performed a comparison of the experimental thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) from crystalline Aspirin (form I) to that calculated from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on a variety of general force fields and a tailor-made force field (TMFF). A comparison is also made with Monte Carlo (MC) simulations which use a "harmonic network" approach to describe the intermolecular interactions. These comparisons were based on the hypothesis that TDS could be a useful experimental data in validation of such simulation parameter sets, especially when calculations of dynamical properties (e.g., thermodynamic free energies) from molecular crystals are concerned. Currently such a validation of force field parameters against experimental data is often limited to calculation of specific physical properties, e.g., absolute lattice energies usually at 0 K or heat capacity measurements. TDS harvested from in-house or synchrotron experiments comprises highly detailed structural information representative of the dynamical motions of the crystal lattice. Thus, TDS is a well-suited experimental data-driven means of cross validating theoretical approaches targeted at understanding dynamical properties of crystals. We found from the results of our investigation that the TMFF and COMPASS (from the commercial software "Materials Studio") parameter sets gave the best agreement with experiment. From our homologous MC simulation analysis we are able to show that force constants associated with the molecular torsion angles are likely to be a strong contributing factor for the apparent reason why these aforementioned force fields performed better.
