Efficiency Conceptualization Model: A Theoretical Method for Predicting the Turnover of Catalysts

In recent times, the theoretical prediction of catalytic efficiency is of utmost urgency. With the advent of density functional theory (DFT), reliable computations can delineate a quantitative aspect of the study. To this state-of-the-art approach, valuable incorporation would be a tool that can acknowledge the efficiency of a catalyst. In the current work, we developed the efficiency conceptualization model (ECM) that utilizes the quantum mechanical tool to achieve efficiency in terms of turnover frequency (TOF). Twenty-six experimentally designed transition metal (TM) water oxidation catalysts were chosen under similar experimental conditions of temperature, pressure, and pH to execute the same. The computations conclude that the Fe-based [Fe(OTf)2(Me2Pytacn)] (MWOC-17) is a highly active catalyst and, therefore, can endure for more time in the catalytic cycle. Our results conclude that the Ir-based catalysts [Cp*Ir(κ2-N,O)X] with MWOC-23: X=Cl; and MWOC-24: X=NO3 report the highest computed turnover numbers (TONs),τ c o m p u t e d T O N 0 ${\tau _{computed\;TON}^0 }$ of 406 and 490 against the highest experimental TONs,τ e x p e r i m e n t a l T O N ${\tau _{experimental\;TON} }$ of 1200 and 2000 respectively, whereas the Co-based [Co(12-TMC)]2+ (MWOC-19) has the lowest TONs (τ c o m p u t e d T O N 0 ${\tau _{computed\;TON}^0 }$ =19, τexperimental TON=16) among the chosen catalysts and thereby successful in corroborating the previous experimental results.

Computational analysis of R-X oxidative addition to Pd nanoparticles

Oxidative addition (OA) is a necessary step in mechanisms of widely used synthetic methodologies such as the Heck reaction, cross-coupling reactions, and the Buchwald-Hartwig amination. This study pioneers the exploration of OA of aryl halide to palladium nanoparticles (NPs), a process previously unaddressed in contrast to the activity of well-studied Pd(0) complexes. Employing DFT modeling and semi-empirical metadynamics simulations, the oxidative addition of phenyl bromide to Pd nanoparticles was investigated in detail. Energy profiles of oxidative addition to Pd NPs were analyzed and compared to those involving Pd(0) complexes forming under both ligand-stabilized (phosphines) and ligandless (amine base) conditions. Metadynamics simulations highlighted the edges of the (1 1 1) facets of Pd NPs as the key element of oxidative addition activity. We demonstrate that OA to Pd NPs is not only kinetically facile at ambient temperatures but also thermodynamically favorable. This finding accentuates the necessity of incorporating OA to Pd NPs in future investigations, thus providing a more realistic view of the involved catalytic mechanisms. These results enhance the understanding of aryl halide (cross-)coupling reactions, reinforcing the concept of a catalytic "cocktail". This concept posits dynamic interconversions between diverse active and inactive centers, collectively affecting the outcome of the reaction. High activity of Pd NPs in direct C-X activation paves the way for novel approaches in catalysis, potentially enhancing the field and offering new catalytic pathways to consider.

Potassium Trimethylsilanolate-Promoted, Anhydrous Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling Reaction Proceeds via the "Boronate Mechanism": Evidence for the Alternative Fork in the Trail

Previous studies have shown that the critical transmetalation step in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling proceeds through a mechanism wherein an arylpalladium hydroxide complex reacts with an aryl boronic acid, termed the oxo-palladium pathway. Moreover, these same studies have established that the reaction between an aryl boronate and an arylpalladium halide complex (the boronate pathway) is prohibitively slow. Herein, studies on isolated intermediates, along with kinetic analysis, have demonstrated that the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction promoted by potassium trimethylsilanolate (TMSOK) proceeds through the boronate pathway, in contrast with other, established systems. Furthermore, an unprecedented, binuclear palladium(I) complex containing a μ-phenyl bridging ligand was characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and computational methods. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the binuclear complex exhibits an open-shell ground electronic state, and reaction kinetics implicate the complex in the catalytic cycle. These results expand the breadth of potential mechanisms by which the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction can occur, and the novel binuclear palladium complex discovered has broad implications for palladium-mediated cross-coupling reactions of aryl halides.
