Photophysical and Fluorescence Anisotropic Behavior of Polyfluorene β-Conformation Films

Resolving conjugated polymer film morphology with polarised transmission and time-resolved emission microscopy

The alignment of chromophores plays a crucial role in determining the optoelectronic properties of materials. Such alignment can make interpretation of fluorescence anisotropy microscopy (FAM) images somewhat ambiguous. The time-resolved emission behaviour can also influence the fluorescence anisotropy. This is particularly the case when probing excitation energy migration between chromophores in a condensed phase. Ideally information concerning the chromophoric alignment, emission decay kinetics and fluorescence anisotropy can be recorded and correlated. We report on the use of polarised transmission imaging (PTI) coupled with both steady-state and time-resolved FAM to enable accurate identification of chromophoric alignment and morphology in thin films of a conjugated polydiarylfluorene. We show that the combination of these three imaging modes presents a comprehensive methodology for investigating the alignment and morphology of chromophores in thin films, particularly for accurately mapping the distribution of amorphous and crystalline phases within the thin films, offering valuable insights for the design and optimization of materials with enhanced optoelectronic performance.

Coplanar Conformational Structure of π-Conjugated Polymers for Optoelectronic Applications

Hierarchical structure of conjugated polymers is critical to dominating their optoelectronic properties and applications. Compared to nonplanar conformational segments, coplanar conformational segments of conjugated polymers (CPs) demonstrate favorable properties for applications as a semiconductor. Herein, recent developments in the coplanar conformational structure of CPs for optoelectronic devices are summarized. First, this review comprehensively summarizes the unique properties of planar conformational structures. Second, the characteristics of the coplanar conformation in terms of optoelectrical properties and other polymer physics characteristics are emphasized. Five primary characterization methods for investigating the complanate backbone structures are illustrated, providing a systematical toolbox for studying this specific conformation. Third, internal and external conditions for inducing the coplanar conformational structure are presented, offering guidelines for designing this conformation. Fourth, the optoelectronic applications of this segment, such as light-emitting diodes, solar cells, and field-effect transistors, are briefly summarized. Finally, a conclusion and outlook for the coplanar conformational segment regarding molecular design and applications are provided.

Precise Design and Deliberate Tuning of Turn-On Fluorescence in Tetraphenylpyrazine-Based Metal−Organic Frameworks

The manipulation on turn-on fluorescence in solid state materials attracts increasing interests owing to their widespread applications. Herein we report how the nonradiative pathways of tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP) units in metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) systems could be hindered through a topological design approach. Two MOFs single crystals of different topology were constructed via the solvothermal reaction of a TPP-based 4,4′,4^″,4^‴-(pyrazine-2,3,5,6-tetrayl) tetrabenzoic acid (H₄TCPP) ligand and metal cations, and their mechanisms of formation have been explored. Compared with the innate low-frequency vibrational modes of flu net Tb-TCPP-1, such as phenyl ring torsions and pyrazine twists, Tb-TCPP-2 adopts a shp net, so the dihedral angle of pyrazine ring and phenyl arms is larger, and the center pyrazine ring in TPP unit is coplanar, which hinders the radiationless decay of TPP moieties in Tb-TCPP-2. Thereby Tb-TCPP-2 exhibits a larger blue-shifted fluorescence and a higher fluorescence quantum yield than Tb-TCPP-1, which is consistent with the reduced nonradiative pathways. Furthermore, Density functional theory (DFT) studies also confirmed aforementioned tunable turn-on fluorescence mechanism. Our work constructed TPP-type MOFs based on a deliberately topological design approach, and the precise design of turn-on fluorescence holds promise as a strategy for controlling nonradiative pathways.

Improving the Intrinsic Stretchability of Fully Conjugated Polymer for Deep-Blue Polymer Light-Emitting Diodes with a Narrow Band Emission: Benefits of Self-Toughness Effect

It is challenging to construct the intrinsically stretchable active layer of rigid conjugated polymers (CPs) toward flexible deep-blue light-emitting diodes (FLEDs). Inspired by the self-toughness effect, sacrificial hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) and a cross-linked network synergistically enabled polydiarylfluorene (PFs-NH) films to present efficient deep-blue emission and excellent intrinsic stretchability. In particular, a cross-linked network structure presenting viscoelasticity behaviors, which was successfully inherited into postprocessed films with interchain interpenetration and a crystallinity domain and behaved as energy absorption and dissipation centers, was induced by the interchain H-bonding interaction in toluene (Tol) precursor solutions where the storage moduli (G') gradually exceeded the loss moduli (G″). Subsequently, intrinsic stretchable films with a tensile rate of 30% were prepared from Tol solutions, different from the brittle films from polar solvents. Eventually, narrow band, deep-blue PLEDs showed a maximum EQE of 1.28% and a full width half-maximum (fwhm) of 28 nm. Therefore, the self-toughness effect induced by hierarchical structures will be feasible to obtain high-performance FLEDs.

All-Solution Processed Single-Layer WOLEDs Using [Pt(salicylidenes)] as Guests in a PFO Matrix

Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of two Pt(II) coordination compounds, the new platinum(II)[N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-3,4-diaminobenzophenone)] ([Pt(sal-3,4-ben)]) and the already well-known platinum(II)[N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-o-phenylenediamine] ([Pt(salophen)]), along with their application as guests in a poly [9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl] (PFO) conjugated polymer in all-solution processed single-layer white organic light-emitting diodes. Completely different performances were achieved: 2.2% and 15.3% of external quantum efficiencies; 2.8 cd A⁻¹ and 12.1 cd A⁻¹ of current efficiencies; and 3103 cd m⁻² and 6224 cd m⁻² of luminance for the [Pt(salophen)] and [Pt(sal-3,4-ben)] complexes, respectively. The Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE 1931) chromaticity color coordinates are (0.33, 0.33) for both 0.1% mol/mol Pt(II):PFO composites at between approximately 3.2 and 8 V. The optoelectronic properties of doped and neat PFO films have been investigated, using steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence. Theoretical calculations at the level of relativistic density functional theory explained these results, based on the presence of the Pt(II) central ion’s phosphorescence emission, considering spin-orbit coupling relationships. The overall results are explained, taking into account the active layer morphological properties, along with the device’s electric balance and the emitter’s efficiencies, according to deep-trap space-charge models. Considering the very simple structure of the device and the ease of synthesis of such compounds, the developed framework can offer a good trade-off for solution-deposited white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs), with further applications in the field of lighting and signage.

Thermal Degradation of Photoluminescence Poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) Solvent-Tuned Aggregate Films

The progression of the green emission spectrum during the decomposition of polyfluorenes (PFs) has impeded the development and commercialization of the materials. Herein, we constructed a solvent-tuned aggregated PFO film with the aim of retarding the material’s thermal degradation behavior which causes a significant decline in optical properties as a result of phase transformation. The tuning of the aggregate amount and distribution was executed by applying a poor alcohol-based solvent in chloroform. It emerges that at a lower boiling point methanol evaporates quickly, limiting the aggregate propagation in the film which gives rise to a more transparent film. Furthermore, because of the modulated β-phase conformation, the absorption spectra of PFO films were red-shifted and broadened. The increase in methanol percentage also led to a rise in β-phase percentage. As for the thermal degradation reactions, both pristine and aggregated PFO films exhibited apparent changes in the UV-Vis spectra and PL spectra. In addition, a 97:3 (chloroform:methanol) aggregated PFO film showed a more defined emission spectrum, which demonstrates that the existence of β-phase is able to suppress the unwanted green emission.

Construction of Robust Cadmium-Free Cu-In-Zn-S Nanocrystals and Polyfluorene Derivatives Hybrid Emissive Layer for Stable Electroluminescent White Light-Emitting Devices

Combination of the merit of inorganic nanocrystals (NCs) and solution-processed conjugated polymer is a convenient strategy to obtain stable and efficient electroluminescent white-light-emitting diodes (el-WLEDs). In this work, an el-WLED was fabricated on the basis of Cd-free Cu-In-Zn-S (CIZS)/ZnS NCs blending with polyfluorene derivative poly[4-(octyloxy)-9,9-diphenylfluoren-2,7-diyl]-co-[5-(octyloxy)-9,9-diphenylfluoren-2,7-diyl] (PODPF), which exhibited a stable white light emission with a color rendering index value of 85. Meanwhile, it had a stable spectrum under high voltage due to the extremely weak energy transfer between PODPF and CIZS/ZnS NCs. To further improve the device performance, PC₉O₄ was used to replace PODPF, which presented better solubility and smoother film-forming properties. Thus, the maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the optimized el-WLED was increased by 221% while maintaining a stable spectrum under high voltage. This work may provide a great foundation on color mixing cadmium-free el-WLEDs.

Disordered Assembly of Donors and Acceptors on Layered Double Hydroxides for High-Efficiency Chemiluminescence Resonance Energy Transfer

High-efficiency chemiluminescence (CL) resonance energy transfer (CRET) can be obtained by shortening the donor-acceptor distance and/or improving the luminescence efficiency of CRET acceptors. However, careful design and stringent experimental conditions are usually required for the ordered assembly of CRET acceptors on support materials to avoid aggregation-caused quenching problems. In this work, an aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active fluorophore was disorderly adsorbed on the surface of layered double hydroxides (LDHs), which could exhibit high-efficiency luminescence. On the other hand, the positively charged LDHs can further adsorb peroxynitrite (ONOO^-) on the surface of LDHs. Therefore, the LDH-supported AIE fluorophore could dramatically amplify weak CL signals from ONOO^- donors as a result of ultra-high CRET efficiency by coupling the shorter donor-acceptor distance with efficient CRET acceptors. The proposed CL system has been successfully applied for the detection of NaNO₂ in the concentration range from 1.0 to 100 μM with a detection limit as low as 0.5 μM. Satisfactory recoveries (98-106%) and good accuracy were achieved for sausage samples. Our success will open new avenues for the convenient design of high-efficiency CRET systems.

Solvent influence on molecular interactions in the bulk of fluorene copolymer films

The effect of intermolecular interactions between the chains of the amorphous PFO–MEH-PPV films built from toluene and tetrahydrofuran (THF) were studied by atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, applying a successive solvent removal procedure. In the good solvent toluene, the incidence of topological entanglements is more significant. While in the poor solvent, coplanar interactions between neighbouring segments of the chains were also found, which is characteristics of cohesional entanglements. Structure factor curves of the films showed three peaks associated with the microstructure of the film, as previously reported by WAX diffractogram measurements. Moreover, the good solvent promotes more flexibility in dihedral angles, and the chains become nearer to each other.

Learning how planarization can affect dichroic patterns in polyfluorenes

The circular dichroism spectra of a single chain of polyfluorene was predicted for a p-twisted helix conformation and local planarized polymer sections in the presence and in the absence of thermal vibrations. Under thermal vibrations at 300 K, the planarized section of polyfluorene affords a red-shifted positive dichroic band between 446 and 456 nm, preserving a degree of chirality. The S1 ← S0 excitation energy decreases from 3.29 eV, for the p-twisted helix to 2.77 or 2.71 eV, for planarized sections with one or two coplanar twists, respectively. Thermal vibrations and intramolecular rotations eventually affect the circular dichroism spectrum patterns, where planarized bent conformers induce a positive band towards 450 nm.

Spray coated perylenebisimide/polymer film with controllable molecular aggregation state and emission properties

Dye doped organic thin films with controllable molecular aggregation and emission properties are of broad interest to the scientific community owing to their large number of potential applications in physics, chemistry, and materials science. Here, a spray coating method was used to prepare perylenebisimides (PBI) doped polymer films. In this study, the effects of the dye concentration, polymer matrix, solvent, and casting process on the optical properties of the resulting films were studied. The aggregation of the PBI into monomer, dimer, and oligomer forms, was rapidly and simply controlled based on the concentration dependence of PBI. The molecular aggregation mechanism in the film forming process for PBI doped polystyrene (PS) was further analyzed by computer simulations. The blends rapidly reached their lowest Gibbs free energy owing to the “frozen” polymer chains and confinement of PBI, molecules with different aggregation states. Therefore, the PBIs/PS films prepared under different conditions had different fluorescent lifetimes and absolute quantum yields. Narrow emission, amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and random lasing (RL) were observed in PBI doped PS films when photo-pumped at 532 nm in transmittance and waveguide modes, respectively. A lower ASE and RL threshold were obtained for PS films doped with monomeric PBI than those in other aggregation states. Moreover, the solvent use in film deposition greatly influenced the emission properties of the PS films by altering their microstructures. These results indicate potential applications for spray coated dye/polymer films in organic solid-state lasers.

Discovery and structure characteristics of the intermediate-state conformation of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) in the dynamic process of conformation transformation and its effects on carrier mobility

Good solution processability is a prerequisite for fabricating polymer optoelectronic devices. In this research, a new PFO chain conformation called “intermediate-state conformation” was found through UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and Raman spectroscopy in the transition process of α conformation towards β conformation. The intermediate-state conformation not only remedies the defect of film-forming caused by large aggregation of β-conformation but also gains an equivalent carrier mobility similar to that of β conformation. Simultaneously, it was found that the film with the intermediate-state conformation had a smooth surface morphology compared to the film with β-conformation, which indicates that the intermediate-state conformation has good solution processability; thus, it is more suitable for the fabrication of photoelectric films with high carrier mobility. The results of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) measurements showed that there were obvious lattice fringes in the films with the intermediate-state conformation and β conformation; this reveals that the intermediate-state conformation has a more planar conformation with extended conjugation length than the β conformation, which is very beneficial to enhance carrier mobility. The research significantly reveals the dynamic evolution of polymer structures based on conjugated polymer physics. The conclusions enrich the understanding of the structure evolution and dynamic process of conjugated polymers and present broad application prospects for photoelectric and other functional devices due to the good film-forming properties of the intermediate-state conformation.

Hierarchical Uniform Supramolecular Conjugated Spherulites with Suppression of Defect Emission

Easily processed, well-defined, and hierarchical uniform artificial architectures with intrinsic strong crystalline emission properties are necessary for a range of light-emitting optoelectronic devices. Herein, we designed and prepared ordered supramolecular spherulites, comprising planar conformational molecules as primary structures and multiple hydrogen bonds as physical cross-links. Compared with serious aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching (up to 70%), these highly ordered architectures exhibited unique and robust crystalline emission with a high PLQY of 55%, which was much higher than those of other terfluorenes. The primary reasons for the high PLQY are the uniform exciton energetic landscape created in the planar conformation and the highly ordered molecular packing in spherulite. Meanwhile, minimal residual defect (green-band) emissions are effectively suppressed in our oriented crystalline framework, whereas the strong and stable blue light radiations are promoted. These findings may confirm that supramolecular ordered artificial architectures may offer higher control and tunability for optoelectronic applications.

Fluorescence anisotropy imaging of a polydiacetylene photopolymer film

UV-illumination of phase-separated surfactant films prepared from mixtures of photopolymerizable 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid and perfluorotetradecanoic acid results in the formation of fluorescent polydiacetylene fibers and aggregates. In this work, the orientation of polymer strands that comprise the resulting photopolymer structures has been probed using fluorescence anisotropy imaging in combination with defocused single-molecule fluorescence imaging. Imaging experiments indicate the presence of significant fiber-to-fiber heterogeneity, as well as anisotropy within each fiber (or aggregate), with both of these properties changing as a function of film preparation conditions. This anisotropy can be attributed to various alignments of the constituent polymer strands that comprise the larger fibers and aggregates. Intriguingly, when using defocused imaging, fiber images consisted of a series of discrete “doughnut” fluorescence emission patterns, which exhibited intermittent on–off blinking behavior; both of these properties are characteristic of individual emission transition dipoles (single molecules). Further, all of the individual emission transition dipoles had a uniform orientation with respect to the axis of the fiber, indicating a common orientation of discrete emitters in the larger polymer fiber. The implications of these results for future studies of the electronic properties of conjugated polymers in larger macroscopic systems are noted.

How β-Phase Content Moderates Chain Conjugation and Energy Transfer in Polyfluorene Films

Poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) is a blue-light-emitting polymer exhibiting two distinct phases, namely, the disordered "glassy" phase and a more ordered β-phase. We investigate how a systematic increase in the fraction of β-phase present in PFO films controls chain conformation, photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE), and the resonant energy transfer from the glassy to the β-phase. All films are prepared by the same technique, using paraffin oil as an additive to the spin-coating solution, allowing systematic tuning of the β-phase fraction. The PFO films exhibit high PLQE with values increasing to 0.72 for increasing fractions of β-phase present, with the β-phase chain conformation becoming more planar and including more repeat units. Differences in Förster radii calculated from the overlap of steady-state absorptance and emission spectra and from time-resolved ultrafast photoluminescence transients indicate that exciton diffusion within the glassy phase plays an important role in the energy transfer process.

Excited-state dynamics of a molecular dyad with two orthogonally-oriented fluorophores

The excited-state dynamics of a T-shaped bichromophoric molecule, consisting of two strong fluorophores, diphenyloxazole and diphenylpyrazoline, directly linked in an orthogonal geometry, was investigated. Despite the weak coupling ensured by this geometry and confirmed by the electronic absorption spectra, this dyad exhibits only weak fluorescence in both apolar and polar solvents, with fluorescence lifetimes ranging from 200 ps in CHX to 10 ps in ACN. Ultrafast spectroscopic measurements reveal that the fluorescence quenching in polar solvents is due to the population of a charge-separated state. In non-polar solvents, this process is energetically not feasible, and a quenching due to an efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) to the triplet manifold is proposed, based on quantum-chemical calculations. This process occurs via the spin-orbit charge-transfer (SOCT) ISC mechanism, which is enabled by the charge-transfer character acquired by the S1 state of the dyad upon structural relaxation and by the orthogonal arrangement of the molecular orbitals involved in the transition. The same mechanism is proposed to explain why the recombination of the charge-separated state is faster in medium than in highly polar solvents, as well as to account for the fast decay of the lowest triplet state to the ground state.

Dynamic Evolution from Chain Disorder to Order of PTB7 Condensed State Structures under External Fields

In this research, the effect of external fields (solvent, temperature, solution concentration, and external force) on dynamic evolution from chain disorder to order of poly[[4,8-bis[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]benzo[1,2- b:4,5- b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl][3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl)carbonyl]thieno[3,4- b]thiophenediyl]] (PTB7) condensed state structures was explored by UV-vis absorption spectra, atomic force microscope, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that PTB7 main chains presented amorphous conformations induced by the poor solvent 1,2-dichloroethane. However, the local ordered aggregation appeared in amorphous conformations when the solubility of the poor solvent was again lowered by reducing temperature. It is worth noting that the size of ordered aggregation was further increased with the decrease of solution concentration or increase of external force. It was found that there were two main PTB7 absorption peaks in the UV-vis absorption spectra; we denoted A_0 -0 for the intensity of the lower energy absorption peak and A_0-1 for the intensity of the higher energy absorption peak. The ratio R = A_0-0/ A_0-1 was used to characterize the dynamic evolution from disorder to order of the PTB7 condensed state structures in absorption spectra. It increased from 0.94 for PTB7 amorphous state to 1.25 for PTB7 large-size ordered aggregation. The dynamic evolution from chain disorder to order could also be distinctly observed by TEM. It was inferred that PTB7 condensed state structures (amorphous state, local ordered aggregation, and large-scale ordered aggregation) might exist simultaneously because of the complexity of copolymer conformations. This research is meaningful to establish physical basis for the molecule design and the synthesis of materials to enhance photoelectronic device efficiency based on condensed matter physics of conjugated polymer.
