Unusual Indirect Nuclear Spin-Spin Exchange Coupling through Solvated Electron

Enhanced J-Couplings through Specially Solvated Electron in Perfluoro-[n]Prismanes and [n]Asteranes

Perfluoro-[n]prismanes ((C2F2)n, n = 3-8) and [n]asteranes ((C3F4)n, n = 3-5) exhibit a strong perfluoro cage effect that can stably encapsulate an additional electron inside the cage. The 2s-like distribution of solvated electron (esol-) not only changes the molecular structure but also affects the nuclear spin properties. In this work, we reveal how the esol- enhances and regulates indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling between two coupled F nuclei (JFF-coupling). Results show that esol- is mainly distributed in the central cavity, and a part of it penetrates into the C-shell and C-F bond regions due to the unique polyhedral C-shell structure. Such a 2s-like esol- creates a novel esol- based coupling mechanism, including the newly generated through-esol- (TSE) and esol--enhanced traditional through-bonds and through-space (esol--enhanced TB+TS) pathways, enhancing and regulating N(e)JFF-coupling, which crosses N bonds in the shortest TB pathway and is affected by esol-. The contribution of the TSE (JTSE) is positive and increases with the increase of the central angle between two coupled F nuclei (∠F⊗F), and the contribution of the esol--enhanced TB+TS (JTB+TS) is negative and |JTB+TS| decreases with the increase of N and straight linear distance between two coupled F nuclei (dFF). Interestingly, N(e)JFF exhibits a special dependence on N/dFF and ∠F⊗F due to the cooperation and competition between JTSE and JTB+TS. When ∠F⊗F < 70°, the esol--enhanced TB+TS can play a role; JTB+TS determines sign and magnitude of N(e)JFF. When ∠F⊗F > 70°, the TSE dominates, and JTSE determines sign and magnitude of N(e)JFF. This work not only further enriches information on the states, distributions, and properties of esol- but also provides insights into the nuclei spin properties in perfluorinated polyhedrons triggered by esol-.

External Electric Field Effects on AFM-like Magnetism in Nitroxide-Functionalized C+:C Base Pair

In this work, we computationally designed a set of nitroxide diradical base pairs (rC⁺:rC) to propose promising magnetic building blocks for spintronic or magnetic molecular materials. C⁺:C12 is found to possess a considerably large antiferromagnetic-like (AFM-like) spin-coupling magnitude (J = -3286.681 cm^-1) and sensitive magnetic responses to the external electric field. Especially, the presence of the Y direction field that is oriented perpendicular to intermolecular hydrogen bonds has the greatest influence on the magnetic exchange interaction (J being from -2549.578 to -4231.286 cm^-1, ΔJ_Y = 1681.708 cm^-1), which could be understood by two simultaneously occurring effects. On the one hand, the external electric field in the -Y direction can regulate the charge polarization of negative and positive electrostatic potentials on C12 moiety and further facilitate the spin transport property. On the other hand, with increasing electric field strength on the -Y axis, the spin density on diradical sources diminishes and that on the coupler increases, which can lead to a homogenous spin-density distribution. The achieved understanding provides a new strategy for designing self-assembly magnetic nanomaterials or nanodevices and enhancing the AFM coupling through the assistance of external electric field.

Electron Presolvation in Tetrahydrofuran-Incorporated Supramolecular Sodium Entities

Alkali metal atoms can repopulate their valence electrons toward solvation due to impact from solvents or microsurroundings and provide the remaining alkali metal cations for coordinating with a variety of specific solvents, forming various electron-expanded complexes or solvated ionic pairs with special interactions. Such special solute-solvent interactions not only affect their electronic structures but also enable the formation of entirely new species. Taking Na(THF)_n (n = 1-6, THF = tetrahydrofuran) and Na₂@THF complexes as typical representatives, density functional theory calculations are carried out to explore the solvation of a sodium atom and its dimer in THF and characterize their complexes as solvent-incorporated supramolecular entities and particularly valence electron presolvation due to their interaction with solvent THF. Electron presolvation is caused by the Pauli repulsion between THF containing a coordinating O atom with a lone pair of electrons and the alkali metal Na or Na₂ containing valence electrons, and THF coordination to them forces their valence electrons to redistribute, which can be easily realized in such solvents. Compared with strongly bound valance electrons of alkali metal atoms, THF coordination enables Na or Na₂ electrons to exhibit much more active states (i.e., the presolvated states) featuring small vertical detachment energies of electrons and distorted diffuse distributions in the frames of the generally structured metal cation complexes, acting as the electron-expanded chemical entities. Furthermore, the degree of electron diffusion and the polarity of the Na-Na bond are proportional to the coordination number (n) and the coordination number difference (Δn) between two Na centers in Na₂@THF. The unique properties of such entities are also discussed. This work offers a theoretical support to the supramolecular entities formed by alkali-metal atoms or their dimers with ligands containing O or N and uncovers the unique electron presolvation phenomena and also enriches our understanding of the novel metal atom complexes.

Molecular Dynamics Characterization of Dielectron Hydration in Liquid Water with Unique Double Proton Transfers

Radiation chemistry of water and aqueous solutions has always been an interesting scientific issue owing to involving electronic excitations, ionization of solvated species, and formation of radiolytic species and many elementary reactions, but the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. Here, we for the first time molecular dynamics characterize the hydration dynamics of two correlated electrons and their triggered unique phenomena in liquid water associated with radiolysis of water using the combined hybrid functional and nonlocal dispersion functional. Hydration of two electrons may experience two distinctly different mechanisms, one forming a spin-paired closed-shell unicaged dielectron hydrate (e₂^2-_aq) and the other forming a spin-paired metastable open-shell bicaged hydrated electron pair (e^-_aq···e^-_aq) which exhibits intriguing antiferromagnetic spin coupling dynamics (in a range of -40 cm^-1 to -500 cm^-1). e^-_aq···e^-_aq can recombine to e₂^2-_aq through a unique solvent fluctuation-controlled gradual-flowing mechanism, and enlarging fluctuation can promote the conversion. Interestingly, we directly observe that e₂^2-_aq as the precursor can trigger hydrogen evolution via unique continuous spontaneous double proton transfer to the dielectron with a short-lived H^-_aq intermediate, but e^-_aq···e^-_aq does not directly. This is the first direct observation for the connection between e₂^2-_aq and spontaneous hydrogen evolution including participation of H^-_aq in aqueous solution, bridging relevant experimental phenomena. This work also evidences an unnoticed process, the double proton transfer mediated charge separation, and presents the first detailed analysis regarding the evolution dynamics of e₂^2-_aq for the understanding of the radiolysis reactions in aqueous solutions.

Tuning Solvated Electrons by Polar-Nonpolar Oxide Heterostructure

Solvated electron states at the oxide/aqueous interface represent the lowest energy charge-transfer pathways, thereby playing an important role in photocatalysis and electronic device applications. However, their energies are usually higher than the conduction band minimum (CBM), which makes the solvated electrons difficult to utilize in charge-transfer processes. Thus it is essential to stabilize the energy of the solvated electron states. Taking LaAlO₃/SrTiO₃ (LAO/STO) oxide heterostructure with H₂O-adsorbed monolayer as a prototypical system, we show using DFT and ab initio time-dependent nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulation that the energy and dynamics of solvated electrons can be tuned by the electric field in the polar-nonpolar oxide heterostructure. In particular, for LAO/STO with p-type interface, the CBM is contributed by the solvated electron state when LAO is thicker than four unit cells. Furthermore, the solvated electron band minimum can be partially occupied when LAO is thicker than eight unit cells. We propose that the tunability of solvated electron states can be achieved on polar-nonpolar oxide heterostructure surfaces as well as on ferroelectric oxides, which is important for charge and proton transfer at oxide/aqueous interfaces.
