How do London Dispersion Interactions Impact the Photochemical Processes of Molecular Switches?

How do spin-scaled double hybrids designed for excitation energies perform for noncovalent excited-state interactions? An investigation on aromatic excimer models

Time-dependent double hybrids with spin-component or spin-opposite scaling to their second-order perturbative correlation correction have demonstrated competitive robustness in the computation of electronic excitation energies. Some of the most robust are those recently published by our group (M. Casanova-Páez, L. Goerigk, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2021, 20, 5165). So far, the implementation of these functionals has not allowed correctly calculating their ground-state total energies. Herein, we define their correct spin-scaled ground-state energy expressions which enables us to test our methods on the noncovalent excited-state interaction energies of four aromatic excimers. A range of 22 double hybrids with and without spin scaling are compared to the reasonably accurate wavefunction reference from our previous work (A. C. Hancock, L. Goerigk, RSC Adv. 2023, 13, 35964). The impact of spin scaling is highly dependent on the underlying functional expression, however, the smallest overall errors belong to spin-scaled functionals with range separation: SCS- and SOS- ω PBEPP86, and SCS-RSX-QIDH. We additionally determine parameters for DFT-D3(BJ)/D4 ground-state dispersion corrections of these functionals, which reduce errors in most cases. We highlight the necessity of dispersion corrections for even the most robust TD-DFT methods but also point out that ground-state based corrections are insufficient to completely capture dispersion effects for excited-state interaction energies.

Noncovalently bound excited-state dimers: a perspective on current time-dependent density functional theory approaches applied to aromatic excimer models

Excimers are supramolecular systems whose binding strength is influenced by many factors that are ongoing challenges for computational methods, such as charge transfer, exciton coupling, and London dispersion interactions. Treating the various intricacies of excimer binding at an adequate level is expected to be particularly challenging for time-dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) methods. In addition to well-known limitations for some TD-DFT methods in the description of charge transfer or exciton coupling, the inherent London dispersion problem from ground-state DFT translates to TD-DFT. While techniques to appropriately treat dispersion in DFT are well-developed for electronic ground states, these dispersion corrections remain largely untested for excited states. Herein, we aim to shed light on current TD-DFT methods, including some of the newest developments. The binding of four model excimers is studied across nine density functionals with and without the application of additive dispersion corrections against a wave function reference of SCS-CC2/CBS(3,4) quality, which approximates select CCSDR(3)/CBS data adequately. To our knowledge, this is the first study that presents single-reference wave function dissociation curves at the complete basis set level for the assessed model systems. It is also the first time range-separated double-hybrid density functionals are applied to excimers. In fact, those functionals turn out to be the most promising for the description of excimer binding followed by global double hybrids. Range-separated and global hybrids-particularly with large fractions of Fock exchange-are outperformed by double hybrids and yield worse dissociation energies and inter-molecular equilibrium distances. The deviation between each assessed functional and reference increases with system size, most likely due to missing dispersion interactions. Additive dispersion corrections of the DFT-D3(BJ) and DFT-D4 types reduce the average errors for TD-DFT methods but do so inconsistently and therefore do not offer a black-box solution in their ground-state parametrised form. The lack of appropriate description of dispersion effects for TD-DFT methods is likely hindering the practical application of the herein identified more efficient methods. Dispersion corrections parametrised for excited states appear to be an important next step to improve the applicability of TD-DFT methods and we hope that our work assists with the future development of such corrections.

London Dispersion Effects on the Stability of Heavy Tetrel Molecules

London dispersion (LD) interactions, which stem from long-range electron correlations arising from instantaneously induced dipoles can occur between neighboring atoms or molecules, for example, between H atoms within ligand C-H groups. These interactions are currently of interest as a new method of stabilizing long bonds and species with unusual oxidation states. They can also limit reactivity by installing LD enhanced groups into organic frameworks or ligand substituents. Here, we address the most recent advances in the design of LD enhanced ligands, the sterically counterintuitive structures that can be generated and the consequences that these interactions can have on the structures and reactivity of sterically crowded heavy group 14 species.

Effect of intermolecular interaction of the charge-transfer complex between molecular "tweezers" and C60/C70 on second-order nonlinear optical properties

To enhance understanding of the correlation between the intermolecular interaction and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, we studied a "molecular tweezer" with two corannulene substituents linked by a tetrahydro[5]helicene imide, which enabled highly sensitive and selective complexation of C₆₀/C₇₀ through convex-concave π-π interactions. The geometric structure, molecular orbitals, intermolecular interactions, electron absorption spectra and second-order NLO properties of the charge-transfer (CT) complexes formed by molecular tweezers and C₆₀/C₇₀ were studied by density functional theory. Larger fullerenes helped to increase the intermolecular interaction and CT, thereby increasing the first hyperpolarizabilities of CT complexes. Embedding of lithium ions helped to enhance the electron-absorption ability of fullerenes, thereby increasing the intermolecular interaction and intermolecular CT and, thus, enhancing their first hyperpolarizability significantly. Our data indicated that, through structure adjustment (including increasing the volume of fullerene and embedding alkali metal ions), we could enhance intermolecular interactions and improve intermolecular CT significantly. These actions could improve the second-order NLO properties of CT complexes.

Menthol and Fatty Acid-Based Hydrophobic Deep Eutectic Solvents as Media for Enzyme Activation

This research aims to provide insights into the biological efficacy of a newly formed hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (DES). A DES based on menthol was successfully synthesized with fatty acids. The DESs’ properties as enzyme activators were examined against a neat counterpart. The menthol:decanoic acid (1:1) combination showed improved thermal stability, strong catalytic activity, and reusability for up to four subsequent cycles under ideal conditions (pH 7.0, 40 °C for 2 h). The hydrophobic DES replaced hexane in ester synthesis, where RNL@DES5 showed better fatty acid conversion compared to neat RNL. This study demonstrated promising applications of hydrophobic DESs in non-aqueous organic reactions.

Chromone-methanol clusters in the electronic ground and lowest triplet state: a delicate interplay of non-covalent interactions

Chromone offers two energetically almost equivalent docking sites for alcohol molecules, in which the hydroxyl group is hydrogen bonded to one of the free electron pairs of the carbonyl O atom. Here, the delicate balance between these two competing arrangements is studied by combining IR/R2PI and UV/IR/UV spectroscopy in a molecular beam supported by quantum-chemical calculations. Most interestingly, chromone undergoes an efficient intersystem crossing into the triplet manifold upon electronic excitation, so that the studies on aromatic molecule-solvent complexes are for the first time extended to such a cluster in a triplet state. As the lowest triplet state (T₁) is of ground state character, powerful energy decomposition approaches such as symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) and local energy decomposition using the domain-based local pair natural orbital coupled-cluster method (DLPNO-CCSD(T)/LED) are applied. From the theoretical analysis we infer for the T₁ state a loss of planarity (puckering) of the 4-pyrone ring of the chromone unit, which considerably affects the interplay between different types of non-covalent interactions at the two possible binding sites.

Dispersion Interactions in Exciton-Localized States. Theory and Applications to π-π* and n-π* Excited States

We address the problem of intermolecular interaction energy calculations in molecular complexes with localized excitons. Our focus is on the correct representation of the dispersion energy. We derive an extended Casimir-Polder formula for direct computation of this contribution through second order in the intermolecular interaction operator V̂. An alternative formula, accurate to infinite order in V̂, is derived within the framework of the adiabatic connection (AC) theory. We also propose a new parametrization of the VV10 nonlocal correlation density functional, so that it corrects the CASSCF energy for the dispersion contribution and can be applied to excited-state complexes. A numerical investigation is carried out for benzene, pyridine, and peptide complexes with the local exciton corresponding to the lowest π–π* or n– π* states. The extended Casimir-Polder formula is implemented in the framework of multiconfigurational symmetry-adapted perturbation theory, SAPT(MC). A SAPT(MC) analysis shows that the creation of a localized exciton affects mostly the electrostatic component of the interaction energy of investigated complexes. Nevertheless, the changes in Pauli repulsion and dispersion energies cannot be neglected. We verify the performance of several perturbation- and AC-based methods. Best results are obtained with a range-separated variant of an approximate AC approach employing extended random phase approximation and CASSCF wave functions.

Bright Luminescence by Combining Chiral [2.2]Paracyclophane with a Boron-Nitrogen-Doped Polyaromatic Hydrocarbon Building Block

Novel BN-doped compounds based on chiral, tetrasubstituted 4,7,12,15-[2.2]paracyclophane and NBN-benzo[ f , g ]tetracene were synthesized by Sonogashira-Hagihara coupling. Conjugated ethynyl linkers allow for electronic communication between the π-electron systems through-bond, whereas through-space interactions are provided by strong π-π overlap between the pairs of NBN-building blocks. Excellent optical and chiroptical properties in racemic and enantiopure conditions were measured, with molar absorption coefficients up to ε = 2.04·10 5  M -1 cm -1 , fluorescence quantum yields up to Φ PL  = 0.70, and intense, mirror-image electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence signals in the magnitude of 10 -3 for the absorption and luminescence dissymmetry factors. Computed g lum,calcd. values are matching the experimental ones. Electroanalytical data show both oxidation and reduction of the ethynyl-linked tetra-NBN-substituted paracyclophane, with an overlap of two redox processes for oxidation leading to a diradical dication.

Impact of van der Waals interactions on the structural and nonlinear optical properties of azobenzene switches

The geometrical structures, relative Z-E energies, and second-order nonlinear responses of a collection of azobenzene molecules symmetrically substituted in the meta-position with functional groups of different bulkiness are investigated using various ab initio and density functional approximations. We show that RI-MP2 and RI-CC2 approximations provide very similar geometries and relative energies and evidence that London dispersion interactions existing between bulky meta-substituents stabilize the Z conformer. The ωB97X-D exchange-correlation functional provides an accurate description of these effects and gives a good account of the nonlinear optical response of the molecules. We show that density functional approximations should include no less than 50% of Hartree-Fock exchange to provide accurate hyperpolarizabilities. A property-structure analysis of the azobenzene derivatives reveals that the main contribution to the first hyperpolarizability comes from the azo bond, but phenyl meso-substituents can enhance it.

Size is Important: Artificial Catalyst Mimics Behavior of Natural Enzymes

Heavily substituted (R)-DTBM-SegPHOS is active in the asymmetric Pd(II)-catalyzed hydrogenation or C−O bond cleavage of α-pivaloyloxy-1-(2-furyl)ethanone, whereas (R)-SegPHOS fails to catalyze either of these transformations. An extensive network of C−H ··· H−C interactions provided by the heavily substituted phenyl rings of (R)-DTBM-SegPHOS leads to increased stabilities of all intermediates and transition states in the corresponding catalytic cycles compared with the unsubstituted analogues. Moreover, formation of the encounter complex and its rearrangement into the reactive species proceeds in a fashion similar to that seen in natural enzymatic reactions. Computations demonstrate that this feature is the origin of enantioselection in asymmetric hydrogenation, since the stable precursor is formed only when the catalyst is approached by one prochiral plane of the substrate.

Dispersion-induced structural preference in the ultrafast dynamics of diphenyl ether

Dispersion interactions are omnipresent in large aromatic systems and influence the dynamics as intermolecular forces. The structural preference induced by dispersion interactions is demonstrated to influence the excited state dynamics of diphenyl ether (DPE) using femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption (TA) associated with quantum chemical calculations. The experimental results in aprotic solvents show that the S₁ state is populated upon irradiation at 267 nm with excess vibrational energy dissipating to solvent molecules in several picoseconds, and then decays via internal conversion (IC) within 50 ps as well as intersystem crossing (ISC) and fluorescence with a lifetime of nanoseconds. The polarity of the solvent disturbs the excited state energies and enhances the energy barriers of the ISC channel. Furthermore, the intermolecular dispersion interactions with protic solvents result in the OH–π isomer dominating in methanol and the OH–O isomer is slightly preferred in t-butanol in the ground state. The hydrogen bonded isomer measurements show an additional change from OH–O to OH–π geometry in the first 1 ps besides the relaxation processes in aprotic solvents. The time constants measured in the TA spectra suggest that the OH–O isomer facilitates IC. The results show that the OH–π isomer has a more rigid structure and a higher barrier for IC, making it harder to reach the geometric conical intersection through conformer rearrangement. This work enables us to have a good knowledge of how the structural preference induced by dispersion interactions affects excited state dynamics of the heteroaromatic compounds.

Theory and practice of modeling van der Waals interactions in electronic-structure calculations

The accurate description of long-range electron correlation, most prominently including van der Waals (vdW) dispersion interactions, represents a particularly challenging task in the modeling of molecules and materials. vdW forces arise from the interaction of quantum-mechanical fluctuations in the electronic charge density. Within (semi-)local density functional approximations or Hartree-Fock theory such interactions are neglected altogether. Non-covalent vdW interactions, however, are ubiquitous in nature and play a key role for the understanding and accurate description of the stability, dynamics, structure, and response properties in a plethora of systems. During the last decade, many promising methods have been developed for modeling vdW interactions in electronic-structure calculations. These methods include vdW-inclusive Density Functional Theory and correlated post-Hartree-Fock approaches. Here, we focus on the methods within the framework of Density Functional Theory, including non-local van der Waals density functionals, interatomic dispersion models within many-body and pairwise formulation, and random phase approximation-based approaches. This review aims to guide the reader through the theoretical foundations of these methods in a tutorial-style manner and, in particular, highlight practical aspects such as the applicability and the advantages and shortcomings of current vdW-inclusive approaches. In addition, we give an overview of complementary experimental approaches, and discuss tools for the qualitative understanding of non-covalent interactions as well as energy decomposition techniques. Besides representing a reference for the current state-of-the-art, this work is thus also designed as a concise and detailed introduction to vdW-inclusive electronic structure calculations for a general and broad audience.

Influence of charge transfer on the isomerisation of stilbene derivatives for application in cancer therapy

The photoisomerisation of non-toxic trans-combretastatin CA4 to its cytotoxic cis isomer demonstrates the high potential of this and similar compounds for localised cancer therapy. The introduction of intramolecular charge-transfer character by altering the substituents of combretastatin systems opens up possibilities to tailor these stilbene derivatives to the special demands of anticancer drugs. In this TDDFT study we explore how absorption wavelengths for both the trans and cis isomers can be red shifted to enable deeper light penetration into tissue and how the trans → cis and cis → trans isomerisations are affected by charge transfer effects to different degrees.

Are dispersion corrections accurate outside equilibrium? A case study on benzene

Modern approaches to modelling dispersion forces are becoming increasingly accurate, and can predict accurate binding distances and energies. However, it is possible that these successes reflect a fortuitous cancellation of errors at equilibrium. Thus, in this work we investigate whether a selection of modern dispersion methods agree with benchmark calculations across several potential-energy curves of the benzene dimer to determine if they are capable of describing forces and energies outside equilibrium. We find the exchange-hole dipole moment (XDM) model describes most cases with the highest overall agreement with reference data for energies and forces, with many-body dispersion (MBD) and its fractionally ionic (FI) variant performing essentially as well. Popular approaches, such as Grimme-D and van der Waals density functional approximations (vdW-DFAs) underperform on our tests. The meta-GGA M06-L is surprisingly good for a method without explicit dispersion corrections. Some problems with SCAN+rVV10 are uncovered and briefly discussed.
