Strong Exciton-Plasmon Coupling in Silver Nanowire Nanocavities

Dissociation slowdown by collective optical response under strong coupling conditions

We consider an ensemble of diatomic molecules resonantly coupled to an optical cavity under strong coupling conditions at normal incidence. Photodissociation dynamics is examined via direct numerical integration of the coupled Maxwell-Schrödinger equations with molecular rovibrational degrees of freedom explicitly taken into account. It is shown that the dissociation is significantly affected (slowed down) when the system is driven at its polaritonic frequencies. The observed effect is demonstrated to be of transient nature and has no classical analog. An intuitive explanation of the dissociation slowdown at polaritonic frequencies is proposed.

Ultra-confined Propagating Exciton-Plasmon Polaritons Enabled by Cavity-Free Strong Coupling: Beating Plasmonic Trade-Offs

Hybrid coupling systems consisting of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) and plasmonic nanostructures have emerged as a promising platform to explore exciton-plasmon polaritons. However, the requisite cavity/resonator for strong coupling introduces extra complexities and challenges for waveguiding applications. Alternatively, plasmonic nano-waveguides can also be utilized to provide a non-resonant approach for strong coupling, while their utility is limited by the plasmonic confinement-loss and confinement-momentum trade-offs. Here, based on a cavity-free approach, we overcome these constraints by theoretically strong coupling of a monolayer TMD to a single metal nanowire, generating ultra-confined propagating exciton-plasmon polaritons (PEPPs) that beat the plasmonic trade-offs. By leveraging strong-coupling-induced reformations in energy distribution and combining favorable properties of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and excitons, the generated PEPPs feature ultra-deep subwavelength confinement (down to 1-nm level with mode areas ~ 10^-4 of λ²), long propagation length (up to ~ 60 µm), tunable dispersion with versatile mode characters (SPP- and exciton-like mode characters), and small momentum mismatch to free-space photons. With the capability to overcome the trade-offs of SPPs and the compatibility for waveguiding applications, our theoretical results suggest an attractive guided-wave platform to manipulate exciton-plasmon interactions at the ultra-deep subwavelength scale, opening new horizons for waveguiding nano-polaritonic components and devices.

Collective response in light-matter interactions: The interplay between strong coupling and local dynamics

Strong molecule-radiation field coupling is often reached when a large number N of molecules respond collectively to the radiation field. In electronic strong coupling, molecular nuclear dynamics following polariton excitation reflects (a) the timescale separation between the fast electronic and photonic dynamics and the slow nuclear motion on one hand, and (b) the interplay between the collective nature of the molecule-field coupling and the local nature of the molecules nuclear response on the other. The first implies that the electronic excitation takes place, in the spirit of the Born approximation, at an approximately fixed nuclear configuration. The second can be rephrased as the intriguing question, can the collective nature of the optical excitation lead to collective nuclear motion following polariton formation, resulting in so-called polaron decoupled dynamics. We address this issue by studying the dynamical properties of a simplified Holstein-Tavis-Cummings type model, in which boson modes representing molecular vibrations are replaced by two-level systems while the boson frequency and the vibronic coupling are represented by the coupling between these levels (that induces Rabi oscillations between them) and electronic state dependence of this coupling. We investigate the short-time behavior of this model following polariton excitation as well as its response to CW driving and its density of states spectrum. We find that, while some aspects of the dynamical behavior appear to adhere to the polaron decoupling picture, the observed dynamics mostly reflect the local nature of the nuclear configuration of the electronic polariton rather than this picture.

Strong Coupling of Carbon Quantum Dots in Liquid Crystals

Carbon quantum dots (CDs) have recently received a tremendous amount of interest owing to their attractive optical properties. However, CDs have broad absorption and emission spectra limiting their application ranges. We herein, for the first time, show synthesis of water-soluble red emissive CDs with a very narrow line width (∼75 meV) spectral absorbance and hence demonstrate strong coupling of CDs and plasmon polaritons in liquid crystalline mesophases. The excited state dynamics of CDs has been studied by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, and CDs display very stable and strong photoluminescence emission with a quantum yield of 35.4% and a lifetime of ∼2 ns. More importantly, we compare J-aggregate dyes with CDs in terms of their absorption line width, photostability, and ability to do strong coupling, and we conclude that highly fluorescent CDs have a bright future in the mixed light-matter states for emerging applications in future quantum technologies.

Molecular Polaritonics: Chemical Dynamics Under Strong Light-Matter Coupling

Chemical manifestations of strong light-matter coupling have recently been a subject of intense experimental and theoretical studies. Here we review the present status of this field. Section 1 is an introduction to molecular polaritonics and to collective response aspects of light-matter interactions. Section 2 provides an overview of the key experimental observations of these effects, while Section 3 describes our current theoretical understanding of the effect of strong light-matter coupling on chemical dynamics. A brief outline of applications to energy conversion processes is given in Section 4. Pending technical issues in the construction of theoretical approaches are briefly described in Section 5. Simple but accurate estimation of light-matter coupling strength and optical loss for a molecular emitter coupled with photonic modes

Light-matter coupling strength and optical loss are two key physical quantities in cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED), and their interplay determines whether light-matter hybrid states can be formed or not in chemical systems. In this study, by using macroscopic quantum electrodynamics (MQED) combined with a pseudomode approach, we present a simple but accurate method, which allows us to quickly estimate the light-matter coupling strength and optical loss without free parameters. Moreover, for a molecular emitter coupled with photonic modes (including cavity modes and plasmon polariton modes), we analytically and numerically prove that the dynamics derived from the MQED-based wavefunction approach is mathematically equivalent to the dynamics governed by the CQED-based Lindblad master equation when the Purcell factor behaves like Lorentzian functions.

Beaming Elastic and SERS Emission from Bent-Plasmonic Nanowire on a Mirror Cavity

We report on the experimental observation of beaming elastic and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) emission from a bent-nanowire on a mirror (B-NWoM) cavity. The system was probed with polarization resolved Fourier plane and energy-momentum imaging to study the spectral and angular signature of the emission wavevectors. The out-coupled elastically scattered light from the kink occupies a narrow angular spread. We used a self-assembled monolayer of molecules with a well-defined molecular orientation to utilize the out-of-plane electric field in the cavity for enhancing Raman emission from the molecules and in achieving beaming SERS emission. Calculated directionality for elastic scattering and SERS emission was found to be 16.2 and 12.5 dB, respectively. The experimental data were corroborated with three-dimensional numerical finite element and finite difference time domain based numerical simulations. The results presented here may find relevance in understanding coupling of emitters with elongated plasmonic cavities and in designing on-chip optical antennas.

Plasmon-enhanced strong exciton-polariton coupling in single microwire-based heterojunction light-emitting diodes

Manipulating the strong light-matter coupling interaction in optical microresonators that are naturally formed by semiconductor micro- or nanostructures is crucial for fabricating high-performance exciton-polariton devices. Such devices can function as coherent light sources having considerably lower emission threshold. In this study, an exciton-polariton light-emitting diode (LED), made of a single ZnO microwire (MW) and a p-GaN substrate, serving as the hole injector, was fabricated, and its working characteristics, in the near-ultraviolet region, were demonstrated. To further improve the quality of the single ZnO MW-based optical microresonator, Ag nanowires (AgNWs) with ultraviolet plasmonic response were deposited on the MW. Apart from the improvement of the electrical and optical properties of the hexagonal ZnO MW, the optically pumped whispering-gallery-mode lasing characteristics were significantly enhanced. Furthermore, a single ZnO MW not covered, and covered by AgNWs, was used to construct a heterojunction LED. Compared with single bare ZnO MW-based LED, significant enhancement of the device performance was achieved, including a significant enhancement in the light output and a small emission band blueshift. Specifically, the exciton-polariton emission was observably enhanced, and the corresponding Rabi splitting energy (∼ 495 meV) was significantly higher than that of the bare ZnO MW-based LED (∼ 370 meV). That ultraviolet plasmons of AgNWs enhanced the exciton-polariton coupling strength was further confirmed via angle-resolved electroluminescence measurements of the single MW-based polaritonic devices, which clearly illustrated the presence of Rabi splitting and subband anti-crossing characteristics. The experimental results provide new avenues to achieve extremely high coupling strengths, which can accelerate the advancements in electrically driven high-efficiency polaritonic coherent emitters and nonlinear devices.

Single vs double anti-crossing in the strong coupling between surface plasmons and molecular excitons

Strong coupling between surface plasmons and molecular excitons may lead to the formation of new hybrid states-polaritons-that are part light and part matter in character. A key signature of this strong coupling is an anti-crossing of the exciton and surface plasmon modes on a dispersion diagram. In a recent report on strong coupling between the plasmon modes of a small silver nano-rod and a molecular dye, it was shown that when the oscillator strength of the exciton is large enough, an additional anti-crossing feature may arise in the spectral region where the real part of the permittivity of the excitonic material is zero. However, the physics behind this double anti-crossing feature is still unclear. Here, we make use of extensive transfer matrix simulations to explore this phenomenon. We show that for low oscillator strengths of the excitonic resonance, there is a single anti-crossing arising from strong coupling between the surface plasmon and the excitonic resonance, which is associated with the formation of upper and lower plasmon-exciton polaritons. As the oscillator strength is increased, we find that a new mode emerges between these upper and lower polariton states and show that this new mode is an excitonic surface mode. Our study also features an exploration of the role played by the orientation of the excitonic dipole moment and the relationship between the modes we observe and the transverse and longitudinal resonances associated with the excitonic response. We also investigate why this type of double splitting is rarely observed in experiments.

Direct Visualization of Gap-Plasmon Propagation on a Near-Touching Nanowire Dimer

Dimers of metallic nanowires (NWs) with nanometric gaps could be an alternative to overcome the limitations of existing plasmonic waveguides. The gap-surface plasmon polaritons (gap-SPPs) of the dimers may propagate along the NW without crosstalk and greatly enhance the coupling efficiency with an emitter, enabling ultracompact optical circuits. Such a possibility has not been realized, and we experimentally show its possibility. The gap-SPPs of the AgNW-molecule-AgNW structure, with a gap of 3-5 nm defined by the molecules, are visualized using the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of the molecules. The SERS images, representing the gap-field intensity distribution, reveal the decay and beating of the monopole-monopole and dipole-dipole gap modes. The propagation lengths of the two (l₁ = 0.5-2 μm and l₂ = 5-8 μm) closely follow the model prediction with a uniform gap, confirming that the scattering loss induced by the gap irregularities is surprisingly low.

Interactions between a single metallic nanoparticle and chiral molecular J-aggregates in the strong coupling regime and the weak coupling regime

We theoretically investigate the coupling between a single Ag nanoparticle and chiral molecular J-aggregates (TDBC). The element of the structure is composed of a Ag nanoparticle entirely surrounded by chiral TDBC. The results show that the coupling between the Ag nanoparticle and TDBC can be tuned by the size of the Ag nanoparticle. By changing the size of the Ag nanoparticle, both the strong coupling effect and the weak coupling effect between the Ag nanoparticle and TDBC are achieved. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra of the hybridized structures in both the strong and the weak coupling regimes present a Fano line-shape, which can be represented in the form of [Formula: see text]. We also find that the CD spectrum in the strong coupling regime is less than that in the weak coupling regime. The maximum of the CD spectrum of the hybridized structure in the scattering spectrum is amplified 130 times compared to that of chiral TDBC in the strong coupling regime, and 490 times compared to that in the weak coupling regime, respectively. Much more energy is used to change the resonant wavelength of the hybridized structure in the strong coupling regime. The radiative efficiency of the system is suppressed. In the weak coupling regime, the energy is mainly used to enhance the CD spectrum. Our research has great potential for molecule detection.

Strong coupling of emitters to single plasmonic nanoparticles: exciton-induced transparency and Rabi splitting

Strong coupling between plasmons in metal nanoparticles and single excitons in molecules or semiconductor nanomaterials has recently attracted considerable experimental effort for potential applications in quantum-mechanical and classical optical information processing and for fundamental studies of light-matter interaction. Here, we review the theory behind strong plasmon-exciton coupling and provide analytical expressions that can be used for fitting experimental data, particularly the commonly measured scattering spectra. We re-analyze published data using these expressions, providing a uniform method for evaluating and quantifying claims of strong coupling that avoids ambiguities in distinguishing between Rabi splitting and exciton-induced transparency (or Fano-like interference between plasmons and excitons).

Angular dependent strong coupling between localized waveguide resonance and surface plasmon resonance in complementary metamaterials

We give direct evidence of both surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized waveguide resonance (LWR) contribution to the extraordinary optical transmission in complementary metamaterials. Strong coupling between SPR and LWR are also observed with clear evidence of Rabi splitting and anti-crossing phenomena. The splitting introduces sharp phase shift, which in turn enhances group velocity delay by the incident angle without geometric parameter change. The results not only clarify SPR and LWR effects in the extraordinary optical transmission, but also provide a novel route to control light-metamaterial interaction by angular modulation for on-chip slow light devices.

Strong light-matter interactions: a new direction within chemistry

Strong light–matter coupling enables the possibility of changing the properties of molecules, without modifying their chemical structures, thus enabling a completely new way to study chemistry and explore materials.

It is possible to modify the chemical and physical properties of molecules, not only through chemical modifications but also by coupling molecules strongly to light. More intriguingly, strong coupling between molecules and light is possible even without the presence of a photon. The phenomenon that makes this possible is called vacuum fluctuations, which is the finite zero point energy of the quantized electromagnetic field inside an optical cavity. The light–matter coupling, which can be as large as 1 eV (100 kJ mol^–1), leads to the formation of new hybrid states, called polaritons. The formed hybrid states can be viewed as a linear combination of light (vacuum field) and matter (molecules), thus completely changing the energy landscape of the system. Using vacuum fluctuations, strong light–matter interactions have for instance been used to change chemical reactivity, charge conductivity, excited state relaxation pathways and rates of chemical reactions of organic molecules. In this review a brief history of the field is given, followed by a theoretical framework, methods of analysis, and a review of accomplishments. Finally, a personal reflection on the future perspectives and applications within this field is given.

Ultrafast measurements of the dynamics of single nanostructures: a review

The ability to study single particles has revolutionized nanoscience. The advantage of single particle spectroscopy measurements compared to conventional ensemble studies is that they remove averaging effects from the different sizes and shapes that are present in the samples. In time-resolved experiments this is important for unraveling homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening effects in lifetime measurements. In this report, recent progress in the development of ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopic techniques for interrogating single nanostructures will be discussed. The techniques include far-field experiments that utilize high numerical aperture (NA) microscope objectives, near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) measurements, ultrafast electron microscopy (UEM), and time-resolved x-ray diffraction experiments. Examples will be given of the application of these techniques to studying energy relaxation processes in nanoparticles, and the motion of plasmons, excitons and/or charge carriers in different types of nanostructures.

Electrically pumped Fabry-Perot microlasers from single Ga-doped ZnO microbelt based heterostructure diodes

Semiconducting micro/nanostructures possessing naturally optical waveguiding behaviors and Fabry-Perot (F-P) like resonances are emerging as versatile building blocks for the assembly of photonic and optoelectronic devices, such as photodetectors, light-emitting diodes, lasers and so on. Individual ZnO micro/nanowires with a rectangular cross-section, such as microwires and microbelts possessing naturally smooth facets along both sides for good optical feedback, can be employed as an underlying F-P mode microcavity whilst as the gain medium for light amplification. In this context, electrically pumped F-P mode microlasers comprising a single ZnO:Ga microbelt and p-GaN substrate have been realized. By treating as the precondition, electrically driven exciton-polariton light-emitting behavior was achieved from the heterojunction diodes, which could be ascribed to strong exciton-photon coupling and waveguided nature of the synthesized microbelts. Once the applied bias exceeded the threshold value, an electrically pumped F-P mode lasing behavior could be observed, the lasing peaks centered at 410.5 nm and 450.5 nm respectively, accompanied with a dramatic narrowing of the spectral line-width to be around 1.0 nm emerging on the waveguided emission spectrum. Therefore, the realization of electrically pumped F-P mode lasing using single microbelt based heterojunction diodes opens the door not only to the fabrication of coherent light sources and model systems for waveguided resonators, but also affords a competitive candidate to develop electrically pumped and ultralow threshold polariton lasers.
