Abstract
One-dimensional (1D) van der Waals (vdW) heterotubes, where different kinds of 1D nanotubes coaxially nest inside each other, offer a flexible platform for promising applications. The various properties of these 1D heterotubes depend on their diameter. Here, we present a systematic theoretical investigation into the structural and electronic properties of two kinds of 1D transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterotubes. We demonstrate that the thermodynamic stability of 1D heterotubes is determined by their interlayer distance. Additionally, we establish that the band alignment transition changes from type I to type II in 1D TMD heterotubes. We identify two distinct transition mechanisms, originating from the exchange of either the valence band maximum or the conduction band minimum. According to an electrostatic model, the band alignment transition is attributed to the interlayer electric field effect, which depends on the heterotube diameter. The findings in this work provide valuable physical insights into the band alignment transition in 1D heterotubes and are instrumental for their potential applications in nanotechnology.

Abstract
Photocatalytic water splitting to spontaneously produce H2 and O2 is a long-standing goal in solar energy conversion, presenting a significant challenge without using sacrificial electron donors or external biases. Inspired by natural photosynthesis, the design of artificial Z-scheme photocatalytic systems is at the forefront of this field. These systems achieve higher redox potential by separating photogenerated electrons and holes through a fast interlayer recombination process between valence and conduction band edges. Z-scheme photocatalysis involves using two different semiconductors with distinct bandgap energies. Here, we explore potential systems based on two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures composed of carbon, nitrogen, or similar main group elements. The advantages and disadvantages of these systems are discussed, with a focus on enhancing their efficiency through strategic design. Special emphasis is placed on the dynamics of excited charge carrier transfer and recombination processes, which are crucial for developing efficient photocatalytic systems for overall water splitting.

Abstract
Stacking engineering is a popular method to tune the performance of two-dimensional materials for advanced applications. In this work, Jansu MoSSe and WSSe monolayers are constructed as a van der Waals (vdWs) heterostructure by different stacking configurations. Using first-principle calculations, all the relaxed stacking configurations of the MoSSe/WSSe heterostructure present semiconductor properties while the direct type-II band structure can be obtained. Importantly, the Z-scheme charge transfer mode also can be addressed by band alignment, which shows the MoSSe/WSSe heterostructure is an efficient potential photocatalyst for water splitting. In addition, the built-in electric field of the MoSSe/WSSe vdWs heterostructure can be enhanced by the S-Se interface due to further asymmetric structures, which also results in considerable charge transfer comparing with the MoSSe/WSSe vdWs heterostructure built by the S-S interface. Furthermore, the excellent optical performances of the MoSSe/WSSe heterostructure with different stacking configurations are obtained. Our results provide a theoretical guidance for the design and control of the two-dimensional heterostructure as photocatalysts through structural stacking.

Abstract
Hydrogen generation by photocatalytic water-splitting holds great promise for addressing the serious global energy and environmental crises, and has recently received significant attention from researchers. In this work, a method of assembling GeC/MXY (M = Zr, Hf; X, Y = S, Se) heterojunctions (HJs) by combining GeC and MXY monolayers (MLs) to construct direct Z-scheme photocatalytic systems is proposed. Based on first-principles calculations, we found that all the GeC/MXY HJs are stable van der Waals (vdW) HJs with indirect bandgaps. These HJs possess small bandgaps and exhibit strong light-absorption ability across a wide range. Furthermore, the built-in electric field (BIEF) around the heterointerface can accelerate photoinduced carrier separation. More interestingly, the suitable band edges of GeC/MXY HJs ensure sufficient kinetic potential to spontaneously accomplish water redox reactions under light irradiation. Overall, the strong light-harvesting ability, wide light-absorption range, small bandgaps, large heterointerfacial BIEFs, suitable band alignments, and carrier migration paths render GeC/MXY HJs highly efficient photocatalysts for overall water decomposition.

Abstract
Monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with a suitable direct band gap and strong optical absorption is very attractive for utilization in solar cells and photocatalytic water splitting. Nevertheless, the broader utilization of MoS2 is impeded by its low carrier mobility and limited responsiveness to infrared light. To overcome these challenges, we constructed a variety of stackings for the boron phosphide (BP)/MoS2 van der Waals heterostructure (vdWH), all of which display S-scheme band alignments except for the AC' stacking. The constituent BP monolayer has superior carrier mobility and strong infrared and visible light response, which makes up for the shortcomings of MoS2. The study revealed that the AB stacking exhibits a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 22.27%, indicating its significant application prospect in solar cells. Additionally, the AB stacking also exhibits a promising application prospect in photocatalytic water splitting due to its suitable band structure, S-scheme band alignment, strong optical adsorption characteristic, high solar-to-hydrogen efficiency, and robust built-in electric field. Meanwhile, applying uniaxial tensile strains along the x-axis direction is more beneficial for photocatalytic water splitting. Hence, the AB-stacked BP/MoS2 vdWH shows significant potential for use in both solar cells and photocatalytic water splitting. This work paves the way for exploring the application of S-scheme heterostructures in solar energy conversion systems.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures have attracted widespread attention in photocatalysis. Herein, we employ a novel strategy utilizing first-principles high-throughput inverse design of 2D Z-scheme heterojunctions for photocatalysis. This approach is anchored in high-throughput screening conditions, which are fundamentally based on the characteristics of carrier mechanisms influenced significantly by Z-scheme heterojunctions. A pivotal element of our screening process is the integration of the indirect-to-direct bandgap transition with momentum-matching band alignment in k-space, guiding us to combine two 2D indirect bandgap monolayers into direct Z-scheme heterojunctions characterized by pronounced interlayer excitons. Various stacking modes introduce extra and distinct degrees of freedom that can be useful for tuning the properties of heterostructures, encompassing factors such as components, stacking patterns, and sequences. We demonstrate that various stacking modes can facilitate the indirect-to-direct bandgap transition and the emergence of interlayer excitons. These findings provide exciting opportunities for designing Z-scheme heterojunctions in photocatalysis.

Abstract
Two-dimensional carbon nitrides (CxNy) have gained significant attention in various fields including hydrogen energy development, environmental remediation, optoelectronic devices, and energy storage owing to their extensive surface area, abundant raw materials, high chemical stability, and distinctive physical and chemical characteristics. One effective approach to address the challenges of limited visible light utilization and elevated carrier recombination rates is to establish heterojunctions for CxNy-based single materials (e.g. C2N3, g-C3N4, C3N4, C4N3, C2N, and C3N). The carrier generation, migration, and recombination of heterojunctions with different band alignments have been analyzed starting from the application of CxNy with metal oxides, transition metal sulfides (selenides), conductive carbon, and Cx'Ny' heterojunctions. Additionally, we have explored diverse strategies to enhance heterojunction performance from the perspective of carrier dynamics. In conclusion, we present some overarching observations and insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of advanced CxNy-based heterojunctions.

Abstract
Herein, combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD), we built a computational framework to rationally screen from a series of 2D conjugated carbon nitrides (CNs) to match with B4C3, resulting in the excellent direct Z-scheme photocatalyst (B4C3/C6N6) for overall water splitting (OWS). Studies on interface engineering and ultrafast dynamics of carrier recombination-transfer show that in the B4C3/C6N6 system, compared with the slower interlayer migration process of carriers, strong nonadiabatic coupling and longer quantum decoherence time accelerates weak carrier interlayer recombination on a subpicosecond time scale, enabling simultaneous triggering of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with ΔG = -0.23 eV and spontaneous oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the absence of sacrificial or cocatalysts. In general, our work will promote the design of efficient direct Z-scheme photocatalysts from an ultrafast dynamics perspective.

Abstract
The recently reported two-dimensional Janus transition metal dichalcogenide materials present promising applications such as in transistors, photocatalysts, and thermoelectric nanodevices. In this work, using molecular dynamics simulations, the self-assembled in-plane MoSSe/WSSe heterostructure superlattice is predicted with a natural sinusoidal structure constructed by an asymmetric interface. Such a sinusoidal structure shows extraordinary mechanical behavior where the fracture strain can be enhanced up to 4.7 times than that of the symmetrical interface. Besides, the deformational structure of all these MoSSe/WSSe heterostructure superlattice are in accordance with the Fourier function curve; the fracture strength and fracture strain also demonstrate pronounced size dependence. Our investigations proposed an ultrastretchable assembled heterostructure superlattice and provided a desirable strategy to tune the mechanical properties of such an in-plane two-dimensional heterostructure.

Abstract
Herein, a novel direct Z-scheme photocatalyst was accomplished by hybridization of 0D MoS2 quantum dots (MSQDs) and 3D honeycomb-like conjugated triazine polymers (CTP) (namely, CTP-MSQD). The unique 0D/3D hierarchical structure significantly enhanced the exposure of active sites and light harvesting property, while the formed p-n junction enabled the direct strong interface coupling without the necessity of any mediators. The optimized CTP-MSQD3 exhibited continuously increased visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity and strong durability both in Cr(VI) reduction and H2 evolution, featured a rate of 0.069 min-1 and 1070 µmol/(hr∙g), respectively, which were 8 times than those of pure 3D-CTP (0.009 min-1 and 129 µmol/(hr∙g)). We believe that this work provides a promising photocatalyst system that combines a 0D/3D hierarchical structure and a Z-scheme charge flow for efficient and stable photocatalytic conversion.

Abstract
Using first-principles calculations in combination with nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD), we propose novel heterostructures of carbon nitride (C7N6) and the Janus GaSnPS monolayer as promising direct Z-scheme photocatalysts for solar-driven overall water splitting. The out-of-plane electric field due to the electric polarization which is dependent on the stacking pattern alters the band alignment and catalytic activity of the heterostructures. The relatively strong interfacial nonadiabatic coupling and long quantum coherence time accelerate the interlayer carrier recombination, enabling a direct Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism. More importantly, the redox ability of the remanent photogenerated carriers in the Z scheme is strong enough to trigger both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (OER) simultaneously without the help of sacrificial agents. Our work reveals a fundamental understanding of ultrafast charge carrier dynamics at vdW heterointerfaces as well as new design prospects for highly efficient direct Z-scheme photocatalysts.

Abstract

Photocatalytic water splitting can produce hydrogen in
an environmentally
friendly way and provide alternative energy sources to reduce global
carbon emissions. Recently, monolayer fullerene networks have been
successfully synthesized [Hou et al. Nature2022, 606, 507], offering new material candidates
for photocatalysis because of their large surface area with abundant
active sites, feasibility to be combined with other 2D materials to
form heterojunctions, and the C60 cages for potential hydrogen
storage. However, efficient photocatalysts need a combination of a
suitable band gap and appropriate positions of the band edges with
sufficient driving force for water splitting. In this study, I employ
semilocal density functional theory and hybrid functional calculations
to investigate the electronic structures of monolayer fullerene networks.
I find that only the weakly screened hybrid functional, combined with
time-dependent Hartree–Fock calculations to include the exciton
binding energy, can reproduce the experimentally obtained optical
band gap of monolayer C60. All the phases of monolayer
fullerene networks have suitable band gaps with high carrier mobility
and appropriate band edges to thermodynamically drive overall water
splitting. In addition, the optical properties of monolayer C60 are studied, and different phases of fullerene networks
exhibit distinct absorption and recombination behavior, providing
unique advantages either as an electron acceptor or as an electron
donor in photocatalysis.

Abstract
Two-dimensional heterostructure manipulation is promising to overcome the high recombination rates and limited redox abilities of photogenerated electron-hole pairs in a single photocatalyst. The built-in electric field (Ehetero) in the type-II heterojunction is normally unfavorable for the desired charge transfer, which is an important but easily neglected issue that needs to be solved. Here, on the basis of the density functional theory (DFT) and the nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) calculations, we obtain a type-II band alignment in Janus-MoSSe/WS2 heterostructure, which meets the band-edge position requirement for water splitting. Importantly, the intrinsic self-build electric field (Eself) of Janus-MoSSe can effectively weaken the hindrance effect of Ehetero for charge transfer by constructing a suitable Se-S stacking configuration, improving charge separation efficiency in the Janus-MoSSe/WS2 heterostructure. Our work provides a materials-by-design paradigm and interlayer charge-transfer dynamics understanding of heterostructure engineering against asymmetric structures lacking reflection symmetry.

Abstract
In search of an efficient solar energy harvester, we herein performed a time domain density functional study coupled with nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) simulation to gain atomistic insight into the charge carrier dynamics of a graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN)-tungsten telluride (WTe2) van der Waals heterostructure. Our NAMD study predicted ultrafast electron (589 fs) and hole-transfer (807 fs) dynamics in g-CN/WTe2 heterostructure and a delayed electron-hole recombination process (2.404 ns) as compared to that of the individual g-CN (3 ps) and WTe2 (0.55 ps) monolayer. The ultrafast charge transfer is due to strong electron-phonon coupling during the charge-transfer process while comparatively weak electron-phonon coupling, sufficient band gap, comparatively lower nonadiabatic coupling (NAC), and fast decoherence time slow down the electron-hole recombination process. The NAMD results of exciton relaxation dynamics are valuable for insightful understanding of charge carrier dynamics and in designing photovoltaic devices based on organic-inorganic 2D van der Waals heterostructures.

Abstract
Photocatalytic overall water splitting is a potential strategy to address energy crisis and environmental issues. However, it remains a great challenge to design an efficient photocatalyst, which not only possesses large spatial separation of photogenerated electrons and holes (PEH) to suppress recombination, but also can preserve the redox capability to drive the reaction. Herein, we design a new type of sandwich-polarized heterojunction by inserting a polarized semiconductor into the interlayer of the conventional photocatalyst. The inserted sublayer with out-of-plane polarization can induce a large electrostatic potential difference between the top and bottom photocatalytic sublayers. Then, the band edges of the top and bottom sublayers can be shifted to form the type II band alignment. Also, the valence band maximum and conduction band minimum will be located on different photocatalytic sublayers to facilitate the spatial separation of PEH. Simultaneously, different from the conventional type II heterojunction that reduces the redox capability, the electrostatic potential difference also acts as an auxiliary booster to offset the reduced redox potential of PEH. Taking the C2N/In2Se3/C2N heterojunction as an example, the polarized In2Se3 effectively promotes the interface transfer of PEH in 1-5 ps and extends the lifetime of PEH to ∼186 ns, which is about six times that of bilayer C2N. Simultaneously, the redox power of C2N is well preserved. Our work offers a promising scheme to advance the photocatalytic overall water splitting.

Abstract
In photocatalytic reactions, the activation of H2O is very important for achieving high energy conversion efficiency. However, its activation mechanism under photoirradiation is still not fully understood. Here, on the basis of first-principles calculations, the role of photogenerated holes on the activation of H2O is investigated in a typical photocatalytic material C2N. The H2O molecule adsorbs at the six-membered N pore of C2N with a dual H-bonding configuration. Due to the electrostatic repulsion between the O atom of H2O and six N atoms of C2N, the energy level of the H2O molecule's highest occupied molecular orbital is raised significantly to exceed the valence band maximum of C2N, so that the photogenerated holes in C2N can be quickly captured by the H2O molecule. The captured photogenerated holes boost the activation of H2O and reduce the dissociation energy barrier from 1.61 to 0.69 eV. Besides, p-type defects of C2N have similar effects as photogenerated holes.

Abstract
Using two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure as photocatalyst for water splitting is a popular strategy for the generation of hydrogen. In this investigation, the first-principles calculations are explored to address the electronic performances of the 2D CdO/HfS2 heterostructure formed by van der Waals (vdW) forces. The CdO/HfS2 vdW heterostructure has a 1.19 eV indirect bandgap with type-II band alignment. Importantly, the CdO/HfS2 vdW heterostructure possesses an intrinsic Z-scheme photocatalytic characteristic for water splitting by obtaining decent band edge positions. CdO donates 0.017 electrons to the HfS2 layer in the heterostructure, inducing a potential drop to further separate the photogenerated electrons and holes across the interface. The CdO/HfS2 vdW heterostructure also has excellent optical absorption capacity, showing a promising role as a photocatalyst to decompose the water.

Abstract
The photoexcited carrier lifetime in semiconductors plays a crucial role in solar energy conversion processes. The defects or impurities in semiconductors are usually proposed to introduce electron-hole (e-h) recombination centers and consequently reduce the photoexcited carrier lifetime. In this report, we investigate the effects of oxygen vacancies (OV) on the carrier lifetime in rutile TiO2, which has important applications in photocatalysis and photovoltaics. It is found that an OV introduces two excess electrons which form two defect states in the band gap. The lower state is localized on one Ti atom and behaves as a small polaron, and the higher one is a hybrid state contributed by three Ti atoms around the OV. Both the polaron and hybrid states exhibit strong electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling and their charge distributions become more and more delocalized when the temperature increases from 100 to 700 K. Such strong e-ph coupling and charge delocalization enhance the nonadibatic coupling between the electronic states along the hole relaxation path, where the defect states behave as intermediate states, leading to a distinct acceleration of e-h recombination. Our study provides valuable insights to understand the role of defects on photoexcited carrier lifetime in semiconductors.

Abstract
A desired water splitting photocatalyst should not only possess a suitable bandgap and band edge position, but also host the spontaneous progress for overall water splitting without the aid of any sacrificial agents. In this work, we propose a two-dimensional CdS/SnS2 heterostructure (CSHS) as a possible water splitting photocatalyst by first-principles calculations. The CSHS enhances the absorption of visible and infrared light, and the type-II band alignment guarantees the spatial separation of the photoinduced carriers. The induced built-in electric field across the CSHS interface efficiently separates the photoexcited carriers and extends their carrier lifetimes. All these properties make the CSHS a direct Z-scheme system with the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions occurring, respectively, at the CdS and SnS2 layers. More encouragingly, the introduction of a S-vacancy into SnS2 could effectively lower the overpotential of the oxygen evolution reaction, thus ensuring the overall water redox reaction to be achieved spontaneously under light irradiation. Our findings suggest that the CSHS is a promising water splitting photocatalyst.

Abstract
Adding alkali metal in organic-inorganic halide perovskites effectively improves its photovoltaic performance, while excessive alkali metal incorporation would produce a detrimental effect. Through density functional theory and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate how and why the photogenerated carrier lifetime mutates with the increase of alkali metal concentration. A small amount of Rb doping in the lattice introduces a slight distortion of the octahedron, reducing the overlap of frontier orbitals and decreasing the nonadiabatic coupling, effectively enhancing the photogenerated carrier lifetime. In contrast, excessive Rb will introduce defect states, resulting in the low carrier lifetime by a factor of 2-3 orders of magnitude. Strikingly, the surface formamidinium (FA) cations exhibit unexpected responsibility for the carrier dynamics since its high-frequency thermal vibration strongly leads to the ultrafast hole trapping and carrier recombination. Our results provide new insight into the concentration-dependent photovoltaic performance of alkali metal cations in organic-inorganic halide perovskites.

Abstract
The photocatalyst surface is central to photocatalytic reactions. However, it has been a challenge to explicitly understand both the surface configuration and the structure-dependent photocatalytic properties at the atomic level. First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide a versatile method that makes up for the lack of experimental surface studies. In DFT calculations, the initial surface model greatly affects the accuracy of the calculation results. Consequently, establishing a more realistic and more reliable material surface models is undoubtedly the first step and the most important link in theoretical calculations. The aim of this Perspective is to provide a general understanding of the methods for the surface modeling of photocatalytic materials in recent years. We begin with a discussion of the basic theories applied in photocatalytic surface research, followed by an explanation of the importance of surface modeling in photocatalysis. We then elaborate on the advantages and disadvantages of the basic surface model and briefly describe the latest surface modeling methods. Finally, we evaluate the rationality of current surface modeling methods. We summarize this Perspective by prospecting the developing directions of photocatalytic surface research in the future. It is believed that a reasonable surface model should be verified by both experimental characterization and theoretical computation with negative feedback.

Abstract
Photocatalytic water splitting is considered one of the most important and appealing approaches for the production of green H2 to address the global energy demand. The utmost possible form of artificial photosynthesis is a two-step photoexcitation known as "Z-scheme", which mimics the natural photosystem. This process solely relies on the effective coupling and suitable band positions of semiconductors (SCs) and redox mediators for the purpose to catalyze the surface chemical reactions and significantly deter the backward reaction. In recent years, the Z-scheme strategies and their key role have been studied progressively through experimental approaches. In addition, theoretical studies based on density functional theory have provided detailed insight into the mechanistic aspects of some breathtakingly complex problems associated with hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction. In this context, this critical review gives an overview of the fundamentals of Z-scheme photocatalysis, including both theoretical and experimental advancements in the field of photocatalytic water splitting, and suggests future perspectives.

Abstract
Effective separation of the photogenerated electrons and holes is critical to improve photocatalytic efficiency. To achieve this, we design a Z-scheme g-ZnO/2H-MoS2 heterostructure to spatially separate the photogenerated carriers promoting the reduction of CO2 on the surface of the heterostructure, through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The g-ZnO/2H-MoS2 heterostructure has a narrow band gap, which is beneficial to speed up the transport of carriers. Simultaneously, the designed heterostructure forms a built-in electric field between the layers to cause band bending, which is very conducive to separate the photogenerated electrons on g-ZnO and the photogenerated holes on 2H-MoS2, and suppress their recombination effectively. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism of photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CH4 on g-ZnO/2H-MoS2 is studied. The calculation results show that the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism reduces the barrier of the potential energy control step compared with pristine g-ZnO and 2H-MOS2. Our calculations lay a theoretical foundation for designing and developing high performance photocatalysts for the photocatalytic reduction of CO2.

Abstract
The construction of van der Waals heterostructures based on 2D polarized materials is a unique technique to achieve enhanced photocatalytic performance. We have investigated the intrinsic electric field and photocatalytic properties of the MoTe2/GeS heterostructure via first-principles calculations. The results showed that a dipole-induced electric field induced by the GeS monolayer and an interface-induced electric field induced by the interface between the GeS monolayer and the MoTe2 monolayer emerge in the 2D polarized MoTe2/GeS heterostructure. The dipole-induced electric field contributes mainly to the total intrinsic electric field. Moreover, the 2D polarized MoTe2/GeS heterostructure possesses many excellent and distinguished photocatalytic performance parameters, such as a direct semiconductor bandgap of 1.524 eV, a wide light spectrum ranging from the ultraviolet to near-infrared region with a high absorption coefficient (about 106 cm−1), a total intrinsic electric field, which reduces the probability of the recombination of photo-generated electron–hole pairs effectively, and a suitable band alignment for the water-splitting reaction. These indicate that the 2D polarized MoTe2/GeS van der Waals heterostructure is a potential novel high-efficient photocatalyst for water-splitting. The 2D polarized material-based MoTe2/GeS heterojunction would be a highly efficient photocatalyst for producing hydrogen energy.![]()

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted numerous investigations after the discovery of graphene. 2D van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are a new generation of layered materials, which can provide more desirable applications. In this study, the first principles calculation was implemented to study the heterostructures based on Janus TMDs (MoSSe and WSSe) and Mg(OH)2 monolayers, which were constructed by vdW interactions. Both MoSSe/Mg(OH)2 and WSSe/Mg(OH)2 vdW heterostructures have thermal and dynamic stability. Besides, XSSe/Mg(OH)2 (X = Mo, W) possesses a direct bandgap with a type-I band alignment, which provides promising applications for light-emitting devices. The charge density difference was investigated, and 0.003 (or 0.0042) |e| were transferred from MoSSe (or WSSe) layer to Mg(OH)2 layer, and the potential drops were calculated to be 11.59 and 11.44 eV across the interface of the MoSSe/Mg(OH)2 and WSSe/Mg(OH)2 vdW heterostructures, respectively. Furthermore, the MoSSe/Mg(OH)2 and WSSe/Mg(OH)2 vdW heterostructures have excellent optical absorption wave. Our studies exhibit an effective method to construct new heterostructures based on Janus TMDs and develop their applications for future light emitting devices. Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted numerous investigations after the discovery of graphene.![]()

Abstract
Solar hydrogen production, which is an eco-friendly method to obtain energy, is still far away from wide commercialization due to the lack of an efficient catalyst. Effective calculations can reduce trial and error costs and provide mechanistic explanations while exploring efficient catalysts. Herein, a type II heterojunction Mg-containing-porphyrin/g-C3N4 is proven to be an efficient photocatalyst by using a combination of DFT and many-body Green's function theory. Our results show that the heterojunction can significantly enhance the absorption of visible light and realize the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes after excitation. Subsequently, water absorbing on the excited surface decomposes into H+ and OH- easily, and then produces H2 and O2 with reduced free energy. Our investigation and explanation can provide theoretical support for designing photonic devices based on porphyrin and g-C3N4, and deepen the understanding of how H2O splits into H2.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) materials, viz. transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) and transition metal oxides (TMO), offer a platform that allows the creation of heterostructures with a variety of properties. The optoelectronic industry has observed an upheaval in the research arena of MoS2 based van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures (HTSs) and Janus structures. Therefore, interest towards these structures is backed by the ability to select their electronic and optical properties. The present study investigates the photocatalytic abilites of bilayer, MoS2 and Janus (MoSSe) based vdW HTSs, viz. MoS2/TMO, MoS2/TMD, MoSSe/TMO and MoSSe/TMD, by a first-principles based approach under the framework of (hybrid) density functional theory (DFT) and many body perturbation theory (GW approximation). We have considered HfS2, ZrS2, TiS2 and WS2, and HfO2, T-SnO2 and T-PtO2 from the families of TMDs and TMOs, respectively. The photocatalytic properties of these vdW HTSs are thoroughly investigated and compared with their respective individual monolayers by visualizing their band edge alignments, electron-hole recombination and optical properties. Strikingly, we observe that, despite most of the individual monolayers not performing optimally as photocatalysts, type II band edge alignment is noticed in vdW HTSs and they appear to be efficient photocatalysts via the Z-scheme. Moreover, these vdW HTSs have also shown promising optical responses in the visible region. Finally, electron-hole recombination, H2O adsorption and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) results establish that MoSSe/HfS2, MoSSe/TiS2, MoS2/T-SnO2 and MoSSe/ZrS2 are probable highly efficient Z-scheme photocatalysts.

Abstract
Since the interaction between electrons and atomic nuclei can affect the electronic structure, in recent years, first-principles-based electron-phonon renormalization methods have been applied in the condensed matter physics community to account for the influence of the electron-phonon coupling in solid systems. However, little is yet known about the behavior and trends of the electron-phonon renormalization in the molecules. In this work, the method for the electron-phonon renormalization in molecules has been derived, using which, we exhaustively investigate the zero-point renormalization in 32 molecules with three different density functions. We find that the renormalization of the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap due to electron-vibration coupling does not relate to the atomic masses but quite relates to the electronic structure properties of the molecules.

Abstract
To achieve efficient conversion and avoid loss of solar energy, ultrafast charge separation and slow electron-hole recombination are desired. Combining time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) with nonadiabatic molecular dynamics, Au9(PH3)8/MoS2, as a prototype for zero-dimensional/two-dimensional (0D/2D) heterojunction, has been demonstrated to present excellent light absorption capacity and effective charge separation characteristics. In the heterojunction, photoexcitation of the Au9(PH3)8 nanocluster drives an ultrafast electron transfer from Au9(PH3)8 to MoS2 within 20 fs, whereas photoexcitation of the MoS2 nanosheet leads to hole transfer from MoS2 to Au9(PH3)8 within 680 fs. The strong nonadiabatic coupling and prominent density overlap are responsible for the faster electron separation relative to hole separation. In competition with the charge separation, electron-hole recombination requires 205 ns, ensuring an effective carrier separation. Our atomistic TD-DFT simulation provides valuable insights into the photocarrier dynamics at the Au9(PH3)8/MoS2 interface, which would stimulate the exploration of 0D/2D hybrid materials for photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
Electron–hole recombination and photocorrosion are two challenges that seriously limit the application of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) for photocatalytic water splitting. In this work, we propose a 2D van der Waals MoSe2/Ti2CO2 heterojunction that features promising resistance to both electron–hole recombination and photocorrosion existing in TMDs. By means of first-principles calculations, the MoSe2/Ti2CO2 heterojunction is demonstrated to be a direct Z-scheme photocatalyst for overall water splitting with MoSe2 and Ti2CO2 serving as photocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, respectively, which is beneficial to electron–hole separation. The ultrafast migration of photo-generated holes from MoSe2 to Ti2CO2 as well as the anti-photocorrosion ability of Ti2CO2 are responsible for photocatalytic stability. This heterojunction is experimentally reachable and exhibits a high solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 12%. The strategy proposed here paves the way for developing 2D photocatalysts for water splitting with high performance and stability in experiments. The two challenges of electron–hole recombination and photocorrosion for two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides in the application of photocatalytic water splitting are simultaneously suppressed by rational design of heterojunctions.![]()

Abstract
The construction of a heterostructure (HS) is an effective strategy to modulate the desired properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials and to extend their applications. In this paper, based on the density functional theory, we predict a metal-free type-II HS formed by h-BN and C2N single layers. The h-BN/C2N HS possesses a smaller bandgap than individual h-BN and C2N single layers, and it exhibits excellent visible light absorption. Importantly, its band edge positions satisfy the requirements for spontaneous water-splitting. With the assistance of the built-in electric field across the HS and the band offset, the photoinduced carriers can be readily spatially separated. Free energy calculations indicate the high catalytic activity for water oxidation and reduction reactions. The performance can be further enhanced by strain, which modulates the bandgap and the band edge positions of the HS. The band alignment may undergo a transition from type-I to type-II under strain, offering an effective switch for the reaction. The appropriate bandgap, suitable band edge positions, and effective carrier separation make the h-BN/C2N HS a promising candidate for use as a photocatalyst in water-splitting.

Abstract
The application of two-dimensional (2D) graphitic carbon-based materials in photocatalysis has been limited to date, because the nature and role of π-conjugated moieties in them remain unclear. Herein we propose and study bilayer BC3/C3N and BC3/BC6N van der Waals heterostructures as direct Z-scheme photocatalysts for overall water splitting using density functional theory calculations. The roles of polar π-conjugated moieties in the formation, stacking configuration, and electronic and optical properties of bilayer van der Waals heterostructures are discussed. It is shown that polar π-conjugated moieties of graphitic BCN monolayers lead to a favorable π-π interaction, determining the most stable stacking configuration, and a long-range charge transfer between components. The former makes the electronic band structure of heterostructures favor photocatalytic water splitting in efficiency and energetics. The latter generates a built-in electric field for the interface recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, indicating a Z-scheme mechanism. The delocalized nature of π-conjugated electrons in monolayer components allows for high carrier mobility of bilayer heterostructures, promoting the photocatalytic reactions on graphitic BCN monolayers. These findings show that 2D π-conjugated materials, including graphitic carbon-based materials and biological systems, have great potential in the design and development of 2D metal-free direct Z-scheme photocatalysts for environmental purification and energy conversion.

Abstract
X-ray diffraction crystallography is the primary technique to determine the three-dimensional structures of biomolecules. Although a robust method, X-ray crystallography is not able to access the dynamical behavior of macromolecules. To do so, we have to carry out molecular dynamics simulations taking as an initial system the three-dimensional structure obtained from experimental techniques or generated using homology modeling. In this chapter, we describe in detail a tutorial to carry out molecular dynamics simulations using the program NAMD2. We chose as a molecular system to simulate the structure of human cyclin-dependent kinase 2.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising metal-free materials for photocatalytic water splitting because of their high surface area and predictability to assemble various molecules with tunable electronic properties. Unfortunately, 2D COFs capable of visible-light-driven photocatalytic overall water splitting are rare, partly due to rigorous requirements to their band alignments and coexistence of catalytic sites for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, 12 2D nitrogen-linked COFs are designed based on first-principles calculations and topological assembly of molecular segments with catalytic activities toward either HER or OER, respectively. The electronic band structures calculated with HSE06 method indicate that 2D COFs are semiconductors with a widely tunable bandgap ranging from 1.92 to 3.23 eV. The positions of both conduction and valence band edges of nine 2D COFs match well with the chemical reaction potential of H2/H+ and O2/H2O, which are capable of photocatalytic overall water splitting. Of particular importance is that three of them based on 2,4,6-tris(4-methylphenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TST) can split water into hydrogen and oxygen under visible light. Our results agree with respect to the literature, with three of them having been studied for photocatalytic HER or CO2 reduction. In addition, we further experimentally demonstrate that I-TST presents both HER and OER activity under visible light. Our findings present a route to design practical 2D COFs as metal-free and single-material photocatalysts for overall water splitting under visible light.

Abstract
This review focuses on recent developments in the field of nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NA-MD), with particular attention given to condensed-matter systems. NA-MD simulations for small molecular systems can be performed using high-level electronic structure (ES) calculations, methods accounting for the quantization of nuclear motion, and using fewer approximations in the dynamical methodology itself. Modeling condensed-matter systems imposes many limitations on various aspects of NA-MD computations, requiring approximations at various levels of theory-from the ES, to the ways in which the coupling of electrons and nuclei are accounted for. Nonetheless, the approximate treatment of NA-MD in condensed-phase materials has gained a spin lately in many applied studies. A number of advancements of the methodology and computational tools have been undertaken, including general-purpose methods, as well as those tailored to nanoscale and condensed matter systems. This review summarizes such methodological and software developments, puts them into the broader context of existing approaches, and highlights some of the challenges that remain to be solved.
