Spontaneous Reduction of Copper(II) to Copper(I) at Solid-Liquid Interface

Robust Spin Liquidity in 2D Metal-Organic Framework Cu3 (HHTP)2 with S=1 /2 Kagome Lattice

On one hand electron or hole doping of quantum spin liquid (QSL) may unlock high-temperature superconductivity and on the other hand it can disrupt the spin liquidity, giving rise to a magnetically ordered ground state. Recently, a 2D MOF, Cu3 (HHTP)2 (HHTP - 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene), containing Cu(II) S=1 / 2 ${{ 1/2 }}$ frustrated spins in the Kagome lattice is emerging as a promising QSL candidate. Herein, we present an elegant in situ redox-chemistry strategy of anchoring Cu3 (HHTP)2 crystallites onto diamagnetic reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets, resulting in the formation of electron-doped Cu3 (HHTP)2 -rGO composite which exhibited a characteristic semiconducting behavior (5 K to 300 K) with high electrical conductivity of 70 S ⋅ m-1 and a carrier density of ~1.1×1018  cm-3 at 300 K. Remarkably, no magnetic transition in the Cu3 (HHTP)2 -rGO composite was observed down to 1.5 K endorsing the robust spin liquidity of the 2D MOF Cu3 (HHTP)2 . Specific heat capacity measurements led to the estimation of the residual entropy values of 28 % and 34 % of the theoretically expected value for the pristine Cu3 (HHTP)2 and Cu3 (HHTP)2 -rGO composite, establishing the presence of strong quantum fluctuations down to 1.5 K (two times smaller than the value of the exchange interaction J).

Charge-transfer interface of insulating metal-organic frameworks with metallic conduction

Downsizing materials into hetero-structured thin film configurations is an important avenue to capture various interfacial phenomena. Metallic conduction at the interfaces of insulating transition metal oxides and organic molecules are notable examples, though, it remained elusive in the domain of coordination polymers including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). MOFs are comprised of metal centers connected to organic linkers with an extended coordination geometry and potential void space. Poor orbitals overlap often makes these crystalline solids electrical insulators. Herein, we have fabricated hetero-structured thin film of a Mott and a band insulating MOFs via layer-by-layer method. Electrical transport measurements across the thin film evidenced an interfacial metallic conduction. The origin of such an unusual observation was understood by the first-principles density functional theory calculations; specifically, Bader charge analysis revealed significant accumulation and percolation of charge across the interface. We anticipate similar interfacial effects in other rationally designed hetero-structured thin films of MOFs.

Direct Layer-by-Layer Growth of Crystalline Ag-TCNQ Thin Films on Functionalized Au Substrate: How Critical Is the pH of Ag(I) Solution?

Wet-chemical fabrication of a crystalline Ag-TCNQ (TCNQ = 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) thin film on non-Ag substrate is challenging whereby the chemistry was powered by photon energy and/or electrical energy. We report for the first time, direct chemical growth of a Ag-TCNQ thin film on a functionalized Au substrate by employing the layer-by-layer (LbL) approach at ambient reaction conditions. Various Ag(I) salt precursors previously realized to be unsuitable for the fabrication of Ag-TCNQ thin films on non-Ag substrates ultimately gave rise to dense and uniform thin films of Ag-TCNQ. The crucial knob regulating the direct formation of the thin films of Ag-TCNQ was identified to be the pH of the respective Ag(I) solutions.

Copper concentration in multiple sclerosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

A wide range of risk factors, from genetic to environmental, have been identified to play role in the etiology of multiple sclerosis. However, the role of trace element remains mostly unknown. We sought to combine all available evidence to assess the association between copper concentration and multiple sclerosis.

METHODS

This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted based on PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science were searched since inception till July 2020. Observational studies that assessed copper as exposure in serum, plasma, whole blood, and cerebrospinal fluid were included. Standardized mean differences (SMD), comparing the mean of copper concentration in multiple sclerosis patients versus healthy controls, were considered as the measure of association. The fixed-effect model with inverse variance weighting was used to combine the findings.

RESULTS

Twenty studies inclusive of 797 multiple sclerosis cases and 875 healthy controls were included in the meta-analysis (all case-control studies). The combined SMDs were 1.25 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.95 to 1.55, number of included studies [n]=4) in plasma, 0.45 (CI 0.22 to 0.68, n=4) in whole blood, 0.19 (CI 0.06 to 0.33, n=12) in blood serum and 1.23 (CI 0.83 to 1.64, n=4) in cerebrospinal fluid.

CONCLUSIONS

We found a higher concentration of copper in multiple sclerosis patients than healthy controls. The possible causal nature of the observed associations warrants further investigation with prospective data.

Emergent Interface in Heterostructured Thin Films of Cu(II) and Cu(I) Coordination Polymers

In this work we report fabrication of high-quality AB- and BA-type heterostructured thin films of cubic Cu(II) (A-type) and tetragonal Cu(I) (B-type) coordination polymers (CPs) on the functionalized Au substrate by the layer-by-layer method. Successful growth of Cu(I)-CP on top of Cu(II)-CP was assigned to be due to the interfacial reduction reaction (IRR). Notably, electrical transport measurements across AB- and BA-type heterostructured thin films revealed rectification of current in opposite directions. We have attributed such an interestingly new observation to the formation of a well-defined interface of Cu(II)-CP and Cu(I)-CP resembling a p-n junction-a hitherto unreported phenomenon that is anticipated to open enormous opportunities for the heterostructured thin films of CPs, likewise celebrated interfaces of oxide heterostructures.

Commencing an Acidic Battery Based on a Copper Anode with Ultrafast Proton-Regulated Kinetics and Superior Dendrite-Free Property

Building aqueous acidic batteries is in its infancy. There are several sporadic attempts that show desirable electrochemical performance, especially rate stability and high power density. The direct use of a metal anode is regarded as the best protocol for fabricating metal-based batteries. However, introducing an acid-tolerant and electrochemically reversible metal anode into an acidic aqueous battery system remains a considerable challenge. In this work, copper (Cu) metal is used as a reversible metal anode to match acidic regimes with a nearly 100% deposition-dissolution efficiency. The reaction kinetics and mechanism of the Cu anode can be regulated by protons with 400% kinetic acceleration compared with a mild electrolyte. In addition, the anode exhibits a dendrite-free morphology after cycling due to the surface roughening effect, which is different from the morphologies of widely used Zn- and Li-metal anodes. When coupled with the Prussian blue analog as cathodes, the battery delivers ultrafast kinetics of 1830 W kg^-1 at 75 C, which is comparable to the power performance of supercapacitors. Long-term cyclic stability is evaluated, where the capacity retention is 85.6% after 5000 cycles. Finally, flexible fiber-shaped acidic Cu-based batteries are demonstrated for potential wearable applications.

Achieving current rectification ratios ≥ 105 across thin films of coordination polymer

A record value of the current rectification ratio (RR ≥ 10⁵) across molecularly doped thin films of a Cu(ii)-coordination polymer is achieved.

Downsizing coordination polymers (CPs) to thin film configurations is a prerequisite for device applications. However, fabrication of thin films of CPs including metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with reasonable electrical conductivity is challenging. Herein, thin film fabrication of a Cu(ii)-CP employing a layer-by-layer method is demonstrated whereby a self-assembled monolayer on Au was used as the functionalized substrate. Growth of the Cu(ii)-CP at the solid–liquid interface generated open-metal Cu(ii) sites in the thin film which were susceptible to activation by molecular dopant molecules. A significant enhancement in in-plane electrical conductivity and an unheralded cross-plane current rectification ratio (exceeding 10⁵ both at room-temperature and at an elevated temperature) were achieved. Such a remarkable rectification ratio was realized, similar to those of commercial Si rectifier diodes. This phenomenon is attributed to the formation of an electronic heterostructure in the molecularly doped thin film. Molecular doping additionally transformed the interfacial properties of thin films from hydrophilic to highly hydrophobic.

Elucidation of the Structure of a Thiol Functionalized Cu-tmpa Complex Anchored to Gold via a Self-Assembled Monolayer

The structure of the copper complex of the 6-((1-butanethiol)oxy)-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine ligand (Cu-tmpa-O(CH₂)₄SH) anchored to a gold surface has been investigated. To enable covalent attachment of the complex to the gold surface, a heteromolecular self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of butanethiol and a thiol-substituted tmpa ligand was used. Subsequent formation of the immobilized copper complex by cyclic voltammetry in the presence of Cu(OTf)₂ resulted in the formation of the anchored Cu-tmpa-O(CH₂)₄SH system which, according to scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, did not contain any accumulated copper nanoparticles or crystalline copper material. Electrochemical investigation of the heterogenized system barely showed any redox activity and lacked the typical Cu^II/I redox couple in contrast to the homogeneous complex in solution. The difference between the heterogenized system and the homogeneous complex was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; the XPS spectrum did not show any satellite features of a Cu^II species but instead showed the presence of a Cu^I ion in a ∼2:3 ratio to nitrogen and a ∼2:7 ratio to sulfur. The +I oxidation state of the copper species was confirmed by the edge position in the X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) region of the X-ray absorption spectrum. These results show that upon immobilization of Cu-tmpa-O(CH₂)₄SH, the resulting structure is not identical to the homogeneous Cu^II-tmpa complex. Upon anchoring, a novel Cu^I species is formed instead. This illustrates the importance of a thorough characterization of heterogenized molecular systems before drawing any conclusions regarding the structure–function relationships.

Both the oxidation state and the structure of the Cu^II complex of tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (Cu-tmpa) change upon anchoring it to a gold surface via a self-assembled monolayer. It was shown by XPS and XANES that a Cu^I species is formed upon anchoring instead in which each tmpa ligand contains roughly two to three copper ions.

The role of zinc, copper, manganese and iron in neurodegenerative diseases

Metals are involved in different pathophysiological mechanisms associated with neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple sclerosis (MS). The aim of this study was to review the effects of the essential metals zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) on the central nervous system (CNS), as well as the mechanisms involved in their neurotoxicity. Low levels of Zn as well as high levels of Cu, Mn, and Fe participate in the activation of signaling pathways of the inflammatory, oxidative and nitrosative stress (IO&NS) response, including nuclear factor kappa B and activator protein-1. The imbalance of these metals impairs the structural, regulatory, and catalytic functions of different enzymes, proteins, receptors, and transporters. Neurodegeneration occurs via association of metals with proteins and subsequent induction of aggregate formation creating a vicious cycle by disrupting mitochondrial function, which depletes adenosine triphosphate and induces IO&NS, cell death by apoptotic and/or necrotic mechanisms. In AD, at low levels, Zn suppresses β-amyloid-induced neurotoxicity by selectively precipitating aggregation intermediates; however, at high levels, the binding of Zn to β-amyloid may enhance formation of fibrillar β-amyloid aggregation, leading to neurodegeneration. High levels of Cu, Mn and Fe participate in the formation α-synuclein aggregates in intracellular inclusions, called Lewy Body, that result in synaptic dysfunction and interruption of axonal transport. In PD, there is focal accumulation of Fe in the substantia nigra, while in AD a diffuse accumulation of Fe occurs in various regions, such as cortex and hippocampus, with Fe marginally increased in the senile plaques. Zn deficiency induces an imbalance between T helper (Th)1 and Th2 cell functions and a failure of Th17 down-regulation, contributing to the pathogenesis of MS. In MS, elevated levels of Fe occur in certain brain regions, such as thalamus and striatum, which may be due to inflammatory processes disrupting the blood-brain barrier and attracting Fe-rich macrophages. Delineating the specific mechanisms by which metals alter redox homeostasis is essential to understand the pathophysiology of AD, PD, and MS and may provide possible new targets for their prevention and treatment of the patients affected by these NDDs.

Perspective on the Interfacial Reduction Reaction

Chemical reactions involving oxidation and reduction processes at interfaces may vary from those in conventional liquid-phase or solid-phase reactions and could influence the overall outcome. This article primarily features a study on metal-ligand coordination at the solid-liquid interface. Of particular mention is the spontaneous reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) at a solid-liquid interface without the need of any extraneous reducing agent, unlike in the liquid-phase reaction whereby no reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) took place. As a consequence of the interfacial reduction reaction (IRR), thin films of Cu-TCNQ (tetracyanoquinodimethane) and Cu-HCF (hexacyanoferrate) were successfully deposited onto a thiol-functionalized Au substrate via a layer-by-layer (LbL) method. IRR is anticipated to be useful in generating new functional and stimuli-responsive materials, which are otherwise difficult to achieve via conventional liquid-phase reactions.

Embedding S = 1/2 Kagome-like Lattice in Reduced Graphene Oxide

An elegant platform to explore frustrated magnetism is the kagome spin lattice. In this work, clinoatacamite, a naturally occurring S = 1/2 kagome-like antiferromagnetic insulator, is synthesized in water at ambient pressure for the first time from a cuprous chloride (CuCl) precursor whereby Cu(I) was spontaneously oxidized to Cu(II) in the form of clinoatacamite [Cu₂(OH)₃Cl] with a simultaneous reduction of graphene oxide (GO) to reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in one pot. A stable nanocomposite of phase-pure clinoatacamite nanocrystals embedded in the rGO matrix was isolated. The clinoatacamite-rGO nanocomposite was determined to be magnetically active with a markedly enhanced coercive field of ∼2500 Oe at 5 K as well as electronically active with a conductivity value of ∼200 S·m^-1 at 300 K. Our results illustrate an avenue of combining exotic magnetic and electronic lattices without impeding their individual characteristics and synergistically generating a new class of magnetic semiconductors.
