Superconductivity in Uncollapsed Tetragonal LaFe2As2

Optoelectronic, thermodynamic and vibrational properties of intermetallic MgAl2Ge2: a first-principles study

Intermetallic compounds with CaAl2Si2-type structure have been studied extensively due to their exciting set of physical properties. Among various alumo-germanides, MgAl2Ge2 is the new representative of CaAl2Si2-type structures. Our previous study explores the structural aspects, mechanical behaviors and electronic features of intermetallic MgAl2Ge2. The present work discloses the results of optoelectronic, thermodynamic and vibrational properties of MgAl2Ge2 via density functional theory-based investigations. The band structure calculations suggest that MgAl2Ge2 possesses slight electronic anisotropy and the compound is metallic. The Fermi surface topology reveals that both electron- and hole-like sheets are present in MgAl2Ge2. The electron charge density map indicates toward the dominance of covalent bonding in MgAl2Ge2. The optical parameters are found to be independent of the state of the polarization of incident electric field. The large value of the reflectivity in the visible-to-ultraviolet region up to ~ 15 eV suggests that MgAl2Ge2 might be a good candidate as coating material to avoid solar heating. The thermodynamic properties have been calculated using the quasi-harmonic Debye approximation. We have found indications of lattice instability at the Brillouin zone boundary in the trigonal $$P\overline{3}m1$$ P 3 ¯ m 1 phase from the phonon dispersion curves. However, the compound might be stable at elevated temperature and as a function of pressure. All the theoretical findings herein have been compared with the reported results (where available). Various implications of our results have been discussed in detail.

Electronic Origin of Tc in Bulk and Monolayer FeSe

FeSe is classed as a Hund’s metal, with a multiplicity of d bands near the Fermi level. Correlations in Hund’s metals mostly originate from the exchange parameter J, which can drive a strong orbital selectivity in the correlations. The Fe-chalcogens are the most strongly correlated of the Fe-based superconductors, with dxy the most correlated orbital. Yet little is understood whether and how such correlations directly affect the superconducting instability in Hund’s systems. By applying a recently developed ab initio theory, we show explicitly the connections between correlations in dxy and the superconducting critical temperature Tc. Starting from the ab initio results as a reference, we consider various kinds of excursions in parameter space around the reference to determine what controls Tc. We show small excursions in J can cause colossal changes in Tc. Additionally we consider changes in hopping by varying the Fe-Se bond length in bulk, in the free standing monolayer M-FeSe, and M-FeSe on a SrTiO3 substrate (M-FeSe/STO). The twin conditions of proximity of the dxy state to the Fermi energy, and the strength of J emerge as the primary criteria for incoherent spectral response and enhanced single- and two-particle scattering that in turn controls Tc. Using c-RPA, we show further that FeSe in monolayer form (M-FeSe) provides a natural mechanism to enhance J. We explain why M-FeSe/STO has a high Tc, whereas M-FeSe in isolation should not. Our study opens a paradigm for a unified understanding what controls Tc in bulk, layers, and interfaces of Hund’s metals by hole pocket and electron screening cloud engineering.

Controlling T_{c} through Band Structure and Correlation Engineering in Collapsed and Uncollapsed Phases of Iron Arsenides

Recent observations of selective emergence (suppression) of superconductivity in the uncollapsed (collapsed) tetragonal phase of LaFe_{2}As_{2} has rekindled interest in understanding what features of the band structure control the superconducting T_{c}. We show that the proximity of the narrow Fe-d_{xy} state to the Fermi energy emerges as the primary factor. In the uncollapsed phase this state is at the Fermi energy, and is most strongly correlated and a source of enhanced scattering in both single and two particle channels. The resulting intense and broad low energy spin fluctuations suppress magnetic ordering and simultaneously provide glue for Cooper pair formation. In the collapsed tetragonal phase, the d_{xy} state is driven far below the Fermi energy, which suppresses the low-energy scattering and blocks superconductivity. A similar source of broad spin excitation appears in uncollapsed and collapsed phases of CaFe_{2}As_{2}. This suggests controlling coherence provides a way to engineer T_{c} in unconventional superconductors primarily mediated through spin fluctuations.

Novel Fe-Based Superconductor LaFe_{2}As_{2} in Comparison with Traditional Pnictides

The recently discovered Fe-based superconductor (FeBS) LaFe_{2}As_{2} seems to break away from an established pattern that doping an FeBS beyond 0.2e/Fe destroys superconductivity. LaFe_{2}As_{2} has an apparent doping of 0.5e, yet superconducts at 12.1 K. Its Fermi surface bears no visual resemblance with the canonical FeBS fermiology. It also exhibits two phases, none magnetic and only one superconducting. We show that the difference between them nonetheless has a magnetic origin, the one featuring disordered moments, and the other locally nonmagnetic. We find that La there assumes an unusual valence of +2.6 to +2.7, so that the effective doping is reduced to 0.30-0.35e. A closer look reveals the same key elements: hole Fermi surfaces near Γ-Z and electron ones near the X-P lines, with the corresponding peak in susceptibility, and a strong tendency to stripe magnetism. The physics of LaFe_{2}As_{2} is thus more similar to the FeBS paradigm than hitherto appreciated.
