Abstract
BODIPYs are bicyclic aromatic compounds with unique spectroscopic, photophysical, and chemical properties. This study aimed to find BODIPYs with characteristics biocompatible with human cell lines for possible use as imaging agents. Six BODIPY derivatives were synthesised with groups linked to boron, fluorine, phenol, or catechol, resulting in compounds with different physicochemical characteristics. NMR, absorption, and emission spectroscopy and mass spectrometry were subsequently used to characterise them. Afterwards, the biocompatibility of these compounds was evaluated using MTT, SRB, and cellular uptake assays in A549 and H1299 cell lines. Furthermore, a haemolysis assay was performed on human blood cells. To summarise the main results, BODIPYs 1 to 4 showed considerable fluorescence. In contrast, BODIPYs 5 and 6 showed very weak fluorescence, which could be related to the presence of the catechol group and its quenching properties. Regarding biocompatibility, all compounds had metabolic activity and viability above 80% and 70%, respectively. BODIPYs 3 and 6 presented the most consistent data, demonstrating good uptake and, in general, haemolytic activity below 25%. In conclusion, the cytotoxic effects of the compounds were not considerable, and the presence of cyclic alkoxides in BODIPYs 3 and 6 may introduce exciting features that should be highlighted for dual imaging for BODIPY 3 due to its fluorescence or for radioactive labelling in the case of both BODIPYs.

Abstract
Three 2,6-electron donor-substituted boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) exhibiting an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character with large Stokes shift and moderate fluorescence quantum yields were designed and synthesized. Broadband femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy measurements were performed to directly detect the CT state in nonpolar or less polar solvents and the charge separation (CS) state in more polar solvents. A solid foundation for the fs-TA assignment can be found in electrolysis experiments. In addition, the ICT character of the newly designed compounds was investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Meanwhile, the reference compounds without the donor groups were synthesized, and their photophysical behaviors and ultrafast time-resolved spectra confirmed that no ICT process occurred regardless of the nature of the solvent. This work emphasizes the importance of decorating the BODIPY core with electron-donating substituents at 2,6-positions to efficiently adjust its photofunctional behaviors demonstrating the ICT character. Importantly, the photophysical processes could be easily regulated by changing the solvent with different polarities.

Abstract
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and formaldehyde (FA) are important species that maintain redox homeostasis in life and are closely related to many physiological and pathological processes. Therefore, it is of great significance to realize the reversible monitoring of them at the intracellular level. Here, we synthesized a reversible ratiometric fluorescent probe through a reasonable design, which can sensitively monitor SO2 derivatives and FA, and the detection limit can reach 0.16 μM. The probe can specifically target mitochondria and successfully monitor the fluctuations of SO2 and FA in living cells. It also works well in the detection of SO2 and FA in zebrafish. This high-performance probe is expected to find broad in vitro and in vivo applications.

Abstract
New borondipyromethene (BODIPY) derivatives chelated at the boron centre with different catecholate and salicylate ligands were synthesized via substituting the fluoride atoms with the aid of aluminum chloride that activates the boron-fluoride bond for substitution. The photophysical properties of the novel BODIPYs were investigated by normalized UV-vis absorption as well as the fluorescence emission spectra. Moreover, the fluorescence quantum yields of the chelated BODIPYs were also calculated and the ultraviolet irradiation of the salicylate derivatives was studied.

Abstract
The electronic communication between two ferrocene groups in the electron-deficient expanded aza-BODIPY analogue of zinc manitoba-dipyrromethene (MB-DIPY) was probed by spectroscopic, electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, and theoretical methods. The excited-state dynamics involved sub-ps formation of the charge-separated state in the organometallic zinc MB-DIPYs, followed by recovery of the ground state via charge recombination in 12 ps. The excited-state behavior was contrasted with that observed in the parent complex that lacked the ferrocene electron donors and has a much longer excited-state lifetime (670 ps for the singlet state). Much longer decay times observed for the parent complex without ferrocene confirm that the main quenching mechanism in the ferrocene-containing 4 is reflective of the ultrafast ferrocene-to-MB-DIPY core charge transfer (CT).

Abstract
Photoinduced electron transfer (PET) is one of the most important mechanisms for developing fluorescent probes and biosensors. Quantitative prediction of the quantum yields of these probes and sensors is crucial to accelerate the rational development of novel PET-based functional materials. Herein, we developed a general descriptor (ΔE) for predicting the quantum yield of PET probes, with a threshold value of ∼0.6 eV. When ΔE < ∼0.6 eV, the quantum yield is low (mostly <2%) due to the substantial activation of PET in polar environments; when ΔE > ∼0.6 eV, the quantum yield is high because of the inhibition of PET. This simple yet effective descriptor is applicable to a wide range of fluorophores, such as BODIPY, fluorescein, rhodamine, and Si-rhodamine. This ΔE descriptor enables us not only to establish new applications for existing PET probes but also to quantitatively design novel PET-based fluorophores for wash-free bioimaging and AIEgen development.
