Anion-Regulated Molecular Rotor Crystal: The First Case of a Stator-Rotator Double Switch with Relaxation Behavior

Molecular Dynamics and Near-Tg Phenomena of Cyclic Thioethers

This article presents the synthesis and molecular dynamics investigation of three novel cyclic thioethers: 2,3-(4'-methylbenzo)-1,4,7,10-tetrathiacyclododeca-2-ene (compound 1), 2,3,14,15-bis(4',4″(5″)-methylbenzo)-1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22,25-octathiacyclotetracosa-2,14-diene (compound 2), and 2,3,8,9-bis(4',4″(5″)-methylbenzo)-1,4,7,10-tetrathiacyclododeca-2,8-diene (compound 3). The compounds exhibit relatively high glass transition temperatures (Tg), which range between 254 and 283 K. This characteristic positions them within the so-far limited category of crown-like glass-formers. We demonstrate that cyclic thioethers may span both the realms of ordinary and sizeable molecular glass-formers, each featuring distinct physical properties. Furthermore, we show that the Tg follows a sublinear power law as a function of the molar mass within this class of compounds. We also reveal multiple dielectric relaxation processes of the novel cyclic thioethers. Above the Tg, their dielectric loss spectra are dominated by a structural relaxation, which originates from the cooperative reorientation of entire molecules and exhibits an excess wing on its high-frequency slope. This feature has been attributed to the Johari-Goldstein (JG) process. Each investigated compound exhibits also at least one intramolecular secondary non-JG relaxation stemming from conformational changes. Their activation energies range from approximately 19 kJ/mol to roughly 40 kJ/mol. Finally, we analyze the high-pressure molecular dynamics of compound 1, revealing a pressure-induced increase in its Tg with a dTg/dp coefficient equal to 197 ± 8 K/GPa.

Formation of Highly Emissive Anthracene Excimers for Aggregation-Induced Emission/Self-Assembly Directed (Bio)imaging

AIEgens have emerged as a promising alternative to molecular rotors in bioimaging applications. However, transferring the concept of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) from solution to living systems remains a challenge. Given the highly heterogeneous nature and the compartmentalization of the cell, different approaches are needed to control the self-assembly within the crowded intricate cellular environment. Herein, we report for the first time the self-assembly mechanism of an anthracene-guanidine derivative (AG) forming the rare and highly emissive T-shaped dimer in breast cancer cell lines as a proof of concept. This process is highly sensitive to the local environment in terms of polarity, viscosity, and/or water quantity that should enable the use of the AG as a fluorescence lifetime imaging biosensor for intracellular imaging of cellular structures and the monitoring of intracellular state parameters. Different populations of the monomer and T-shaped and π-π dimers were observed in the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleoplasm, related to the local viscosity and presence of water. The T-shaped dimer is formed preferentially in the nucleus because of the higher density and viscosity compared to the cytoplasm. The present results should serve as a precursor for the development of new design strategies for molecular systems for a wide range of applications such as cell viscosity, density, or temperature sensing and imaging.

Temperature-Tuned Variable Confined Space for Modulating Dipolar Polarization of a Disc-Shaped Ammonium Ion

Free accessible confined space and loose interaction are crucial for most solid-state ionic motions. Here, by using a near-spherical anion and a disc-shaped ammonium as two distinct but rigid building blocks, we report a new ionic crystal, (HMIm)3[La(NO3)6] (HMIm = 1-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium), in which the different confined spaces of three (HMIm)+ ions are fine-tuned over a broad temperature range. This effect can be utilized to modulate the dipolar polarization across a wide temperature/frequency range. Additionally, small-scale substitution of (HMIm)+ by its isomer of almost identical shape/size affords molecular solid solutions, which can further tune the dipolar polarization by varying the doping ratio. It is revealed that the differences in dipole moment and hydrogen bond rather than that of shape/size lead to a distorted crystalline environment for these solid solutions. Overall, we provide an exceptional model for understanding and regulating the dipole motion of polar aromatic molecules/ions in a crystalline environment.

Ferroelectric coordination metal complexes based on structural and electron dynamics

Ferroelectrics that display electrically invertible polarisation are attractive materials because of their potential for wide-ranging applications. To date, considerable effort has thus been devoted towards developing ferroelectric materials, particularly those comprising organic/inorganic compounds. In these systems, structural dynamics such as atomic displacement and reorientation of polar ions/molecules play a key role in the generation of reversible spontaneous polarisation. Although there are many reports concerned with organic/inorganic ferroelectrics, ferroelectrics based on coordination metal complexes have been largely unexplored despite their often unique electronic and spin state properties. In this feature article, we discuss recent progress involving coordination metal complex-based ferroelectrics where the reversible polarisation originates not only from structural dynamics (represented by proton transfer, molecular motion, and liquid crystalline behaviour) but also from electron dynamics (represented by electron transfer and spin crossover phenomena) occurring at the metal centre. Furthermore, unique synergy effects (i.e. magnetoelectric coupling) resulting from the structural and electron dynamics are described. We believe that this review pertaining to ferroelectric coordination metal complexes provides new insights for fabricating further advanced functional materials such as multiferroics and spintronics.

Multiple rotor modes and how to trigger them: complex cation ordering in the family of relaxing hybrid formates

A combination of structural, dielectric and calorimetric studies is used to describe a highly atypical behaviour of novel hybrid formate [NH₃(CH₂)₃NH₂(CH₂)₃NH₃][Mn(HCOO)₃]₃, incorporating large triprotonated molecular cations. Two successive phase transitions, switching between fast multiple rotor modes, and the surprising probable coexistence of static and dynamic disorder are discussed for this compound.

In Situ Observation of Ferroelastic Domain and Phase Transition in a Three-Dimensional Molecular Crystal

Massive efforts have been devoted to designing molecular ferroic materials by molecular modification. For molecular ferroelastic, previous work is focused on the temperature-dependent ferroelastic domains, however, few are related to controlling the ferroelastic domain by the stress. Inspired by the "quasi-spherical theory" and fluorination effect, we designed a more flexible (MedabcoF)²⁺ (MedabcoF=1-fluoro-4-methyl-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) cation by introducing a methyl group and a fluorine atom at the two symmetrical ends of the Dabco (1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) and synthesized a hybrid 3D perovskite (MedabcoF)Rb(BF₄ )₃ (1) which displays three reversible phase transitions accompanying dual ferroelastic behavior. Besides, it not only exhibits ferroelastic domains switching by the thermal stimulation, and the sensitive reaction of in situ domains under the stress of it is also realized. This work not only achieves a force-controlled ferroelastic domain but develops a more profound comprehension of the relationship between the thermal motion behavior of guest cations and the intriguing properties of materials.

Repurposing Existing Molecular Machines through Accurate Regulation of Cooperative Motions

To understand how different external stimuli affect the cooperative motions in a molecular machine consisting of multiple components, we have investigated at the atomic level the effects of pH, solvent, and ionic strength on the mechanism underlying the ring-through-ring movement in a saturated [3]rotaxane. Our results indicate that different external stimuli regulate the stable states, the shuttling rate, and the mechanism that governs the ring-through-ring motion by controlling the cooperative movement of the components and triggering a gamut of responses, thereby opening to a vast number of potential applications, such as quaternary logical calculations. The present work cogently demonstrates that with existing nanomachines possessing a simple topology, but using different external stimuli-an approach coined multidimensional regulation-challenging tasks requiring precise control of the molecular motions at play can be achieved, and our methodology is particularly germane for de novo design of intelligent molecular machines.

A multiaxial molecular ferroelectric with record high TC designed by intermolecular interaction modulation

Through precise and ingenious molecular modification, we successfully obtained a multiaxial ferroelectric, [FEtDabco]ZnI3 (N-fluoroethyl-N'-ZnI3-1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium), with a record high Tc (540 K) among molecular ferroelectrics, which is promising for application under extreme thermal conditions.

Methylation Design Strategy to Trigger a Dual Dielectric Switch and Improve the Phase Transition Temperature

Phase transitions of hybrid materials have aroused widespread concern and call for an in-depth study on its structure design, because the structure and characteristics are closely related, which promote potential applications in the field of temperature sensors, dielectric switches, and actuators. However, designing materials with multiple phase transitions and a high phase transition temperature (Tr) remains a huge challenge. In order to deal with this key hurdle, we tried to regulate the structural components and successfully synthesized [MASD]₂[CdCl₄] (1, MASD = 8-methyl-5-azoniaspiro[4,5]decane), which displays multiple phase transitions occurring at 273.8 K and 395.9 K separately. The Tr has significantly increased compared with the parent compounds reported previously. As the temperature sensitivity of compound 1 is constant at different frequencies, it can be applied for detectors or sensors under frequency-independent or wide frequency conditions. Moreover, methylation design strategy evidently triggered the dual dielectric switch and improved the Tr, which opens a new path for finding and adjusting ideal materials of multiple phase transition.

Hydrogen-Bonded Crystalline Molecular Machines with Ultrafast Rotation and Displacive Phase Transitions

Two new crystalline rotors 1 and 2 assembled through N-H⋅⋅⋅N hydrogen bonds by using halogenated carbazole as stators and 1,4-diaza[2.2.2]bicyclooctane (DABCO) as the rotator, are described. The dynamic characterization through ¹ H T₁ relaxometry experiments indicate very low rotational activation barriers (E_a ) of 0.67 kcal mol^-1 for 1 and 0.26 kcal mol^-1 for 2, indicating that DABCO can reach a THz frequency at room temperature in the latter. These E_a values are supported by solid-state density functional theory computations. Interestingly, both supramolecular rotors show a phase transition between 298 and 250 K, revealed by differential scanning calorimetry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The subtle changes in the crystalline environment of these rotors that can alter the motion of an almost barrierless DABCO are discussed here.

Three-Dimensional Metal-Free Molecular Perovskite with a Thermally Induced Switchable Dielectric Response

Temperature-responsive materials with switching physical properties have been widely researched. Among them, the switchable dielectric perovskite materials show potential applications in the electrical and electronic industries and even the intelligence industries. However, perovskite oxides and hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites, as the most representative switchable dielectric materials, are limited by bad biocompatibility. Herein, we report temperature-dielectric-responsive metal-free perovskite (H₂dabco)(NH₄)[BF₄]₃ constructed by the strategy of substituting the B site in the general formula ABX₃ (doubly protonated 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane = H₂dabco). Meanwhile, structurally similar hybrid material (H₂dabco)Rb[BF₄]₃ was designed as a control. They exhibit similar phase-transition characteristics and dielectric response behaviors around 333 K. More interestingly, the ordered-disordered transformation of their organic "spherical" cations (H₂dabco) was deemed to produce their phase transitions and dielectric response switching. Given its ability to generate a dielectric response, (H₂dabco)(NH₄)[BF₄]₃ will show the potential application of metal-free perovskite in a future thermal sensing device.

Conformational analysis and molecular dynamics of glass-forming aromatic thiacrown ethers
