Nuclear Quantum Effect on the χ(2) Band Shape of Vibrational Sum Frequency Generation Spectra of Normal and Deuterated Water Surfaces

Bulklike Vibrational Coupling of Surface Water Revealed by Sum-Frequency Generation Spectroscopy

Vibrational coupling between interfacial water molecules is important for energy dissipation after on-water chemistry, yet intensely debated. Here, we quantify the interfacial vibrational coupling strength through the linewidth of surface-specific vibrational spectra of the water's O─H (O─D) stretch region for neat H_{2}O/D_{2}O and their isotopic mixtures. The local-field-effect-corrected experimental SFG spectra reveal that the vibrational coupling between hydrogen-bonded interfacial water O─H groups is comparable to that in bulk water, despite the effective density reduction at the interface.

Characterizing Interfaces by Voronoi Tessellation

The chemistry of interfaces differs markedly from that of the bulk. Calculation of interfacial properties depends strongly on the definition of the interface, which can lead to ambiguous results that vary between studies. There is a need for a method that can explicitly define the interfaces and boundaries in molecular systems. Voronoi tessellation offers an attractive solution to this problem through its ability to determine neighbors among specified groups of atoms. Here we discuss three cases where Voronoi tessellation combined with modeling of vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy yields relevant insights: the breakdown of the air-water interface into clear and intuitive molecular layers, the study of the hydration shell in biological systems, and the acceleration of difficult spectral calculations where intermolecular vibrational couplings dominate. The utility of Voronoi tessellation has broad applications that extend beyond any single type of spectroscopy or system.

Ion-Specific Water-Macromolecule Interactions at the Air/Aqueous Interface: An Insight into Hofmeister Effect

The specificity of ions in inducing conformational changes in macromolecules is introduced as the Hofmeister series; however, the detailed underlying mechanism is not comprehensible yet. We utilized surface-specific sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy to explore the Hofmeister effect at the air/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/water interface. The spectral signature observed from the ssp polarization scheme reveals ion-specific ordering of water molecules following the Hofmeister series attributed to the ion-macromolecule interactions. Along with this, the presence of ions does not reflect any significant influence on the structure of the PVP macromolecule. However, the ppp-SFG spectra in the CH-stretch region reveal the impact of ions on the orientation angle of vinyl chain CH₂-groups, which follows the Hofmeister series: SO₄^2- > Cl^- > NO₃^- > Br^- > ClO₄^- > SCN^-. The minimal orientation angle of CH₂-groups indicates significant reordering in PVP vinyl chains in the presence of chaotropic anions ClO₄^-, and SCN^-. The observation is attributed to the ion-specific water-macromolecule interactions at the air/aqueous interface. It is compelling to observe the signature of spectral blue shifts in the OH-stretch region in the ppp configuration in the presence of chaotropic anions. The origin of spectral blue shifts has been ascribed to the existence of weaker interactions between the interfacial water molecules and the backbone CH- and CH₂-moieties of the PVP macromolecules. The ion-specific modulation in water-macromolecule interactions is endorsed by the relative propensity of anion's adsorption toward the air/aqueous interface. The experimental findings highlight the existence and cooperative participation of ion-specific water-macromolecule interactions in the mechanism of the Hofmeister effect, along with the illustrious ion-water and ion-macromolecule interactions.

Design of an Electrostatic Frequency Map for the NH Stretch of the Protein Backbone and Application to Chiral Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy

We develop an electrostatic map for the vibrational NH stretch (amide A) of the protein backbone with a focus on vibrational chiral sum frequency generation spectroscopy (chiral SFG). Chiral SFG has been used to characterize protein secondary structure at interfaces using the NH stretch and to investigate chiral water superstructures around proteins using the OH stretch. Interpretation of spectra has been complicated because the NH stretch and OH stretch overlap spectrally. Although an electrostatic map for water OH developed by Skinner and co-workers was used previously to calculate the chiral SFG response of water structures around proteins, a map for protein NH that is directly responsive to biological complexity has yet to be developed. Here, we develop such a map, linking the local electric field to vibrational frequencies and transition dipoles. We apply the map to two protein systems and achieve much better agreement with experiment than was possible in our previous studies. We show that couplings between NH and OH vibrations are crucial to the line shape, which informs the interpretation of chiral SFG spectra, and that the chiral NH stretch response is sensitive to small differences in structure. This work increases the utility of the NH stretch in biomolecular spectroscopy.

Investigation of Water Evaporation Process at Air/Water Interface using Hofmeister Ions

Evaporation is an interfacial phenomenon in which a water molecule breaks the intermolecular hydrogen (H-) bonds and enters the vapor phase. However, a detailed demonstration of the role of interfacial water structure in the evaporation process is still lacking. Here, we purposefully perturb the H-bonding environment at the air/water interface by introducing kosmotropic (HPO₄^-2, SO₄^-2, and CO₃^-2) and chaotropic ions (NO₃^- and I^-) to determine their influence on the evaporation process. Using time-resolved interferometry on aqueous salt droplets, we found that kosmotropes reduce evaporation, whereas chaotropes accelerate the evaporation process, following the Hofmeister series: HPO₄^-2 < SO₄^-2 < CO₃^-2 < Cl^- < NO₃^- < I^-. To extract deeper molecular-level insights into the observed Hofmeister trend in the evaporation rates, we investigated the air/water interface in the presence of ions using surface-specific sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. The SFG vibrational spectra reveal the significant impact of ions on the strength of the H-bonding environment and the orientation of free OH oscillators from ∼36.2 to 48.4° at the air/water interface, where both the effects follow the Hofmeister series. It is established that the slow evaporating water molecules experience a strong H-bonding environment with free OH oscillators tilted away from the surface normal in the presence of kosmotropes. In contrast, the fast evaporating water molecules experience a weak H-bonding environment with free OH oscillators tilted toward the surface normal in the presence of chaotropes at the air/water interface. Our experimental outcomes showcase the complex bonding environment of interfacial water molecules and their decisive role in the evaporation process.

Energy relaxation dynamics of hydrogen-bonded OH vibration conjugated with free OH bond at an air/water interface

Vibrational energy relaxation dynamics of the excited hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) OH conjugated with free OH (OD) at an air/water (for both pure water and isotopically diluted water) interface are elucidated via non-equilibrium ab initio molecular dynamics (NE-AIMD) simulations. The calculated results are compared with those of the excited H-bonded OH in bulk liquid water reported previously. In the case of pure water, the relaxation timescale (vibrational lifetime) of the excited H-bonded OH at the interface is T₁ = 0.13 ps, which is slightly larger than that in the bulk (T₁ = 0.11 ps). Conversely, in the case of isotopically diluted water, the relaxation timescale of T₁ = 0.74 ps in the bulk decreases to T₁ = 0.26 ps at the interface, suggesting that the relaxation dynamics of the H-bonded OH are strongly dependent on the surrounding H-bond environments particularly for the isotopically diluted conditions. The relaxation paths and their rates are estimated by introducing certain constraints on the vibrational modes except for the target path in the NE-AIMD simulation to decompose the total energy relaxation rate into contributions to possible relaxation pathways. It is found that the main relaxation pathway in the case of pure water is due to intermolecular OH⋯OH vibrational coupling, which is similar to the relaxation in the bulk. In the case of isotopically diluted water, the main pathway is due to intramolecular stretch and bend couplings, which show more efficient relaxation than in the bulk because of strong H-bonding interactions specific to the air/water interface.

Progress in phase-sensitive sum frequency generation spectroscopy

Sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy is a unique and powerful tool for investigating surfaces and interfaces at the molecular level. Phase-sensitive SFG (PS-SFG) is an upgraded technique that can overcome the inherent drawbacks of conventional SFG. Here we review several methods of PS-SFG developed and reported in 1990-2020. We introduce how and by which group each PS-SFG method was designed and built in terms of interferometer implementation for optical heterodyne detection, with one exception of a recent numerical method that does not rely on interferometry. We also discuss how PS-SFG solved some typical problems for aqueous interfaces that were once left open by conventional SFG. These problems and their solutions are good examples to demonstrate why PS-SFG is essential. In addition, we briefly note a few terminology issues related with PS-SFG to avoid confusion.

Mirror-image antiparallel β-sheets organize water molecules into superstructures of opposite chirality

Biomolecular hydration is fundamental to biological functions. Using phase-resolved chiral sum-frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG), we probe molecular architectures and interactions of water molecules around a self-assembling antiparallel β-sheet protein. We find that the phase of the chiroptical response from the O-H stretching vibrational modes of water flips with the absolute chirality of the (l-) or (d-) antiparallel β-sheet. Therefore, we can conclude that the (d-) antiparallel β-sheet organizes water solvent into a chiral supermolecular structure with opposite handedness relative to that of the (l-) antiparallel β-sheet. We use molecular dynamics to characterize the chiral water superstructure at atomic resolution. The results show that the macroscopic chirality of antiparallel β-sheets breaks the symmetry of assemblies of surrounding water molecules. We also calculate the chiral SFG response of water surrounding (l-) and (d-) LK₇β to confirm the presence of chiral water structures. Our results offer a different perspective as well as introduce experimental and computational methodologies for elucidating hydration of biomacromolecules. The findings imply potentially important but largely unexplored roles of water solvent in chiral selectivity of biomolecular interactions and the molecular origins of homochirality in the biological world.

Molecular Structure and Modeling of Water-Air and Ice-Air Interfaces Monitored by Sum-Frequency Generation

From a glass of water to glaciers in Antarctica, water-air and ice-air interfaces are abundant on Earth. Molecular-level structure and dynamics at these interfaces are key for understanding many chemical/physical/atmospheric processes including the slipperiness of ice surfaces, the surface tension of water, and evaporation/sublimation of water. Sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy is a powerful tool to probe the molecular-level structure of these interfaces because SFG can specifically probe the topmost interfacial water molecules separately from the bulk and is sensitive to molecular conformation. Nevertheless, experimental SFG has several limitations. For example, SFG cannot provide information on the depth of the interface and how the orientation of the molecules varies with distance from the surface. By combining the SFG spectroscopy with simulation techniques, one can directly compare the experimental data with the simulated SFG spectra, allowing us to unveil the molecular-level structure of water-air and ice-air interfaces. Here, we present an overview of the different simulation protocols available for SFG spectra calculations. We systematically compare the SFG spectra computed with different approaches, revealing the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods. Furthermore, we account for the findings through combined SFG experiments and simulations and provide future challenges for SFG experiments and simulations at different aqueous interfaces.
