Delayed Photoluminescence and Modified Blinking Statistics in Alumina-Encapsulated Zero-Dimensional Inorganic Perovskite Nanocrystals

Highly Emissive Zero-Dimensional Cesium Lead Iodide Perovskite Nanocrystals with Thermally Activated Delayed Photoluminescence

We utilized a modified reverse-microemulsion method to develop highly emissive and photostable zero-dimensional (0D) Cs₄Pb(Br_1-xI_x)₆ perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs). We employed single-particle photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy to explore blinking statistics and demonstrate single-photon emission from individual PNCs. Low-temperature blinking and photon correlation studies revealed a transition from single- to multiphoton emission with progressively longer "delayed" PL components, reaching ∼70 ns at room temperature and representing a distinctive behavior to previously known iodide PNCs. Such thermally activated PL emission is explained by the existence of defect-related "reservoir" states, feeding back into the PNC's emissive state and providing multiple photons within a single excitation cycle. This work establishes a new member in the 0D class of perovskite materials, studies its photophysical properties, and reveals its potential for future optoelectronic applications.

Moisture-Dependent Blinking of Individual CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals Revealed by Single-Particle Spectroscopy

All-inorganic metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have been exceptional candidates for high-performance solution-processed optoelectronic and photonic devices compared with organometal halide perovskite NCs due to their superior stability. However, the interactions between all-inorganic perovskite NCs and moisture, which is an acknowledged detrimental factor, are still under debate, and detailed investigations to uncover such fundamentals remain to be performed. Herein, with wide-field fluorescence microscopy, the burst photoluminescence blinking responses of CsPbBr₃ NCs were observed in ambient air, and moisture rather than oxygen was verified to be the key factor that leads to the enhanced PL intensity and reduced OFF duration. This behavior is rationalized through an effective passivation effect of the adsorbed water molecules on the surface halide vacancies on CsPbBr₃ NCs. This work validates that ∼40% humidity atmospheres are helpful for better utilizing the all-inorganic perovskites, which is evidence of their promising prospect for application.

The role of atmospheric conditions in the nonradiative recombination in individual CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite crystals

Organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites have been emerging as potential candidates for lightweight photovoltaic applications in space. However, fundamental physics concerning the effect of atmosphere on the radiative and nonradiative recombination in perovskites remains far from well understood. Here, we investigate the creation and annihilation of nonradiative recombination centers in individual CH₃NH₃PbI₃ perovskite crystals by controlling the atmospheric conditions. We find that the photoluminescence (PL) of individual perovskite crystals can be quenched upon exposure from air to vacuum, while the subsequent PL enhancement in air shows a pressure dependence. Further analysis attributes the PL decline in vacuum to the activation of nonradiative trap sites, which is likely due to the lattice distortion caused by the variation of local strain on perovskites. With a gradual increase of the air pressure, the light-assisted chemisorption of oxygen on perovskite will passivate these nonradiative trap sites while simultaneously restoring the lattice imperfection, leading to PL enhancement. The present findings suggest that placing the perovskite in an environment with moderate oxygen content can protect the material from photophysical losses that can be pronounced under inert conditions.

Strong Purcell enhancement at telecom wavelengths afforded by spinel Fe3O4 nanocrystals with size-tunable plasmonic properties

Developments in the field of nanoplasmonics have the potential to advance applications from information processing and telecommunications to light-based sensing. Traditionally, nanoscale noble metals such as gold and silver have been used to achieve the targeted enhancements in light-matter interactions that result from the presence of localized surface plasmons (LSPs). However, interest has recently shifted to intrinsically doped semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) for their ability to display LSP resonances (LSPRs) over a much broader spectral range, including the infrared (IR). Among semiconducting plasmonic NCs, spinel metal oxides (sp-MOs) are an emerging class of materials with distinct advantages in accessing the telecommunications bands in the IR and affording useful environmental stability. Here, we report the plasmonic properties of Fe₃O₄ sp-MO NCs, known previously only for their magnetic functionality, and demonstrate their ability to modify the light-emission properties of telecom-emitting quantum dots (QDs). We establish the synthetic conditions for tuning sp-MO NC size, composition and doping characteristics, resulting in unprecedented tunability of electronic behavior and plasmonic response over 450 nm. In particular, with diameter-dependent variations in free-electron concentration across the Fe₃O₄ NC series, we introduce a strong NC size dependency onto the optical response. In addition, our observation of plasmonics-enhanced decay rates from telecom-emitting QDs reveals Purcell enhancement factors for simple plasmonic-spacer-emitter sandwich structures up to 51-fold, which are comparable to values achieved previously only for emitters in the visible range coupled with conventional noble metal NCs.

Nanomaterials for Quantum Information Science and Engineering

Quantum information science and engineering (QISE)-which entails the use of quantum mechanical states for information processing, communications, and sensing-and the area of nanoscience and nanotechnology have dominated condensed matter physics and materials science research in the 21st century. Solid-state devices for QISE have, to this point, predominantly been designed with bulk materials as their constituents. This review considers how nanomaterials (i.e., materials with intrinsic quantum confinement) may offer inherent advantages over conventional materials for QISE. The materials challenges for specific types of qubits, along with how emerging nanomaterials may overcome these challenges, are identified. Challenges for and progress toward nanomaterials-based quantum devices are condidered. The overall aim of the review is to help close the gap between the nanotechnology and quantum information communities and inspire research that will lead to next-generation quantum devices for scalable and practical quantum applications.

State of the Art and Prospects for Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Metal-halide perovskites have rapidly emerged as one of the most promising materials of the 21st century, with many exciting properties and great potential for a broad range of applications, from photovoltaics to optoelectronics and photocatalysis. The ease with which metal-halide perovskites can be synthesized in the form of brightly luminescent colloidal nanocrystals, as well as their tunable and intriguing optical and electronic properties, has attracted researchers from different disciplines of science and technology. In the last few years, there has been a significant progress in the shape-controlled synthesis of perovskite nanocrystals and understanding of their properties and applications. In this comprehensive review, researchers having expertise in different fields (chemistry, physics, and device engineering) of metal-halide perovskite nanocrystals have joined together to provide a state of the art overview and future prospects of metal-halide perovskite nanocrystal research.

Gentle Materials Need Gentle Fabrication: Encapsulation of Perovskites by Gas-Phase Alumina Deposition

Metal halide perovskites have attracted tremendous attention as promising materials for future-generation optoelectronic devices. Despite their outstanding optical and transport properties, the lack of environmental and operational stability remains a major practical challenge. One of the promising stabilization avenues is metal oxide encapsulation via atomic layer deposition (ALD); however, the unavoidable reaction of metal precursors with the perovskite surface in conventional ALD leads to degradation and restructuring of the perovskites' surfaces. This Perspective highlights the development of a modified gas-phase ALD technique for alumina encapsulation that not only prevents perovskites' degradation but also significantly improves their optical properties and air stability. The correlation between precise atomic interactions at the perovskite-metal oxide interface with the dramatically enhanced optical properties is supported by density functional theory calculations, which also underlines the widespread applicability of this gentle technique for a variety of perovskite nanostructures unbarring potential opportunities offered by combination of these approaches.

Revealing Dynamic Effects of Mobile Ions in Halide Perovskite Solar Cells Using Time-Resolved Microspectroscopy

Halide perovskites are promising candidate materials for the next generation high-efficiency optoelectronic devices. Since perovskites are electronic-ionic mixed conductors, ion dynamics have a critical impact on the performance and stability of perovskite-based applications. However, comprehensively understanding ionic dynamics is challenging, particularly on nanoscale imaging of ionic dynamics in perovskites. In this review, mobile ion dynamics in halide perovskites investigated via luminescence spectroscopy combined with confocal microscopy are discussed, including mobile ion induced fluorescence quenching, phase segregation in mixed halide hybrid perovskite, and mobile ion accumulation at the interface in perovskite devices. Steady-state and time-resolved luminescence imaging techniques, combined with confocal microscopy, are unique tools for probing ionic dynamics in perovskites, providing invaluable insights on ionic dynamics in nanoscale resolution, along with a wide temporal range from picoseconds to hours. The works in this review are not only for understanding mobile ions to improve the design of perovskite-based devices but also foster the development of microspectroscopic methodologies in a broader solid-state physics context of investigating ionic transports in polycrystalline materials.

Interface Matters: Enhanced Photoluminescence and Long-Term Stability of Zero-Dimensional Cesium Lead Bromide Nanocrystals via Gas-Phase Aluminum Oxide Encapsulation

Cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs), while possessing facile chemical synthesis routes and high photoluminescence (PL) properties, are still challenged by issues of instability and degradation. Although atomic layer deposition (ALD) of metal oxides has been one of the common encapsulation approaches for longer term stability, its application inevitably resulted in severe loss of emission efficiency and at times partial loss of structural integrity of perovskites, creating a bottleneck in its practical viability. We demonstrate a nondestructive modified gas-phase technique with codeposition of both precursors trimethylaluminum and water to dramatically enhance the PL emission in zero-dimensional (0D) Cs₄PbBr₆ PNCs via alumina encapsulation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of Cs₄PbBr₆ films reveals the alumina deposition to be accompanied by elemental composition changes, particularly by the reduction of the excessive cesium content. Ab initio density functional theory simulations further unfold that the presence of excess Cs on the surface of PNCs leads to decomposition of structural [PbBr₆]^4- octahedra in the 0D perovskite lattice, which can be prevented in the presence of added hydroxyl groups. Our study thus unveils the pivotal role of the PNC surface composition and treatment in the process of its interaction with metal oxide precursors to control the PL properties as well as the stability of PNCs, providing an unprecedented way to use the conventional ALD technique for their successful integration into optoelectronic and photonic devices with improved properties.

Dynamics of Intermittent Delayed Emission in Single CdSe/CdS Quantum Dots

Bright and fast fluorescence makes semiconductor nanocrystals, or quantum dots (QDs), appealing for applications ranging from biomedical research to display screens. However, a few percent of their fluorescence intensity is surprisingly slow. Research into this "delayed emission" has been scarce, despite undesired consequences for some applications and potential opportunities for others. Here, we characterize the dynamics of delayed emission exhibited by individual CdSe/CdS core/shell QDs and correlate these with changes in the emission spectrum. The delayed-emission intensity from a single QD fluctuates strongly during an experiment of several minutes and is thus not always "on", implying that control over delayed emission may be possible. Periods of bright delayed emission correlate with red-shifted emission spectra. This behavior is consistent with exciton polarization by fluctuating electric fields due to diffusing surface charges, which have been known to cause spectral diffusion in QDs. Our findings thus provide a stepping stone for future efforts to control delayed emission.

Correlation of Photoluminescence and Structural Morphologies at the Individual Nanoparticle Level

Single-particle spectroscopy has demonstrated great potential for analyzing the microscopic behavior of various nanoparticles (NPs). However, high-resolution optical imaging of these materials at the nanoscale is still very challenging. Here, we present an experimental setup that combines high sensitivity of time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) techniques with atomic force microscopy (AFM). This system enables single-photon detection with a time resolution of 120 ps and a spatial resolution of 5 nm. We utilize the setup to investigate the photoluminescence (PL) characteristics of both zero-dimensional (0D) and three-dimensional (3D) perovskite nanocrystals and establish a correlation between the particles’ sizes, their PL blinking, and the lifetime behavior. Our system demonstrates an unprecedented level of information, opening the door to understanding the morphology–luminescence correlation of various nanosystems.

Extent of Shallow/Deep Trap States beyond the Conduction Band Minimum in Defect-Tolerant CsPbBr3 Perovskite Quantum Dot: Control over the Degree of Charge Carrier Recombination

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) are known to be defect-tolerant, possessing a clean band gap with optically inactive benign defect states. However, we show that there exist significant deep trap states beyond the conduction band minimum, although the extent of shallow trap states is observed to be minimal. The extent of deep trap states beyond the conduction band minimum seems to be significant in PQDs; however, the extent is less than that of even optically robust CdSe- and InP-based core/alloy-shell QDs. In-depth analyses based on ultrafast transient absorption and ultrasensitive single-particle spectroscopic investigations decode the underlying degree of charge carrier recombination in CsPbBr₃ PQDs, which is quite important for energy applications.
