Layered Double Hydroxides: A Novel Promising 2D Nanomaterial for Bone Diseases Treatment

Bone diseases including bone defects, bone infections, osteoarthritis, and bone tumors seriously affect life quality of the patient and bring serious economic burdens to social health management, for which the current clinical treatments bear dissatisfactory therapeutic effects. Biomaterial-based strategies have been widely applied in the treatment of orthopedic diseases but are still plagued by deficient bioreactivity. With the development of nanotechnology, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with adjustable metal ion composition and alterable interlayer structure possessing charming physicochemical characteristics, versatile bioactive properties, and excellent drug loading and delivery capabilities arise widespread attention and have achieved considerable achievements for bone disease treatment in the last decade. However, to the authors' best knowledge, no review has comprehensively summarized the advances of LDHs in treating bone disease so far. Herein, the advantages of LDHs for orthopedic disorders treatment are outlined and the corresponding state-of-the-art achievements are summarized for the first time. The potential of LDHs-based nanocomposites for extended therapeutics for bone diseases is highlighted and perspectives for LDHs-based scaffold design are proposed for facilitated clinical translation.

The Preparations of Fluorographene Nanosheets and Research in Tribological Properties in High Vacuum

In this study, fluorographene nanosheets (FG nanosheets) were prepared via the solvent-ultrasonic exfoliation method. The fluorographene sheets were observed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The microstructure of the as-prepared FG nanosheets was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and a thermal analyzer (TG). The tribological properties of FG nanosheets as an additive in ionic liquids in high vacuum were compared to that of ionic liquid (IL) with graphene (IL-G). The wear surfaces and transfer films were analyzed via an optical microscope, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that FG nanosheets can be obtained from the simple solvent-ultrasonic exfoliation method. The prepared G nanosheets are a sheet, and the longer the ultrasonic time is, the thinner the sheet is. Ionic liquids with FG nanosheets had low friction and a low wear rate under high vacuum conditions. The improved frictional properties were attributed to the transfer film of FG nanosheets and more formation film of Fe-F.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of CaAl-LDH Intercalating with Eugenol and Its Corrosion Protection Performances for Reinforcing Bar

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalating with a corrosion inhibitor for slowing down the corrosion of a reinforcing bar has attracted considerable attention. However, achieving high-loading capacity of organic inhibitor in LDH with high efficiency and long-term protection characteristics remains an important challenge. In this work, the CaAl-LDH intercalating with eugenol (EG) was synthesized via a continuous hydrothermal method. The prepared LDHs were characterized by SEM, XRD, UV-vis absorption spectra and TGA. Additionally, the corrosion protection performances of LDH-EG for steel bar were studied in detail via the electrochemical method. The results show that the loading amount of EG in LDHs was about 30% and about 80% EG could be released from LDH-EG within 4 h in SCPs containing 3.5% NaCl. The electrochemical test results show that the Rct value (105~106 Ω · cm2) of steel-mortar incorporated with LDH-EG has increased by 3-4 orders of magnitude compared to the specimen without LDHs (102~103 Ω · cm2) after 16 dry-wet cycles corrosion test. The significantly improved protection capability is mainly derived from two aspects: one is the filling effect of LDH, which can fill the pores of mortar and improve the impermeability; another reason is that the intercalated EG can slowly diffuse out of the inner structure of LDHs in a controllable way and result in a relatively long-term effect of corrosion inhibition.

Synthesis of Eco-Friendly Carbon Dots as Self-Repairing Additives of Polyalphaolefin by Means of a Green Solvation Effect

The eco-friendly menthol-modified carbon dots (CDs-Menth) were synthesized for the first time and exhibited the particularly promising application potential as additives of polyalphaolefin (PAO4). On the one hand, the CDs-Menth could be well dispersed into PAO4 with excellent and long-term dispersion stability via a convenient and green mean, that is, the solvation effect of petroleum ether. This mean was far more advanced to current strategies such as chemical modifications and adding dispersants. On the other hand, the CDs-Menth as additives possessed not only the duty-bound merits such as the distinguished friction-reducing, anti-wear, and load-carrying functions, but also an amazing ability of self-repairing effect. The repairing rate of lower disc in the ball-on-disc friction pair lubricated with CDs-Menth/PAO4 lubricant (2.5 wt %) was about 19.3% if the friction duration was prolonged from 20 to 120 min. Meanwhile, the wear volume reduction for PAO4 caused by CDs-Menth remarkably increased from 43.5 to 74.6%. By virtue of the self-repairing effect, the CDs-Menth could form the tough and tensile boundary lubrication films on the rubbing surfaces, not only tremendously reducing the friction and wear of friction pair, but also hopefully protecting the friction interfaces from the potential oxidation and corrosion.

Study on the Tribological Properties of F-T DS/ZnFe-LDH Composite Lubricating Material

The homemade soot capture device was used to burn Fischer-Tropsch synthetic diesel (F-T diesel) in order to simulate the combustion of F-T diesel in the engine and collect its soot (F-T DS, FS). The zinc-iron hydrotalcite (ZnFe-LDH) and the composite materials of FS and ZnFe-LDH (F-T DS/ZnFe-LDH, FS/ZnFe-LDH) were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis, and the similarities and differences in tribological characteristics of the above three lubricating materials such as 10# white oil (10# WO) lubricant additives were investigated. FS is an aggregation composed of amorphous carbon and graphite microcrystals. ZnFe-LDH is mainly composed of nanosheets, Zn, and Fe hydroxide particles, with a high degree of crystallization, while FS/ZnFe-LDH is a “sandwich layer” composed of nanosheets and soot particles. Because of the addition of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and the grafting of a long carbon chain lipophilic group in the preparation process, FS/ZnFe-LDH has better anti-wear properties than the FS and ZnFe-LDH Effect. When FS/ZnFe-LDH is added at 0.2 wt.%, the average friction coefficient (AFC) and average wears scar diameter (AWSD) are at their lowest. Compared with pure 10# WO, the minimum values of AFC and AWSD have dropped by 36.84% and 22.58%, respectively. XPS analysis of the wear scar surface shows that when ZnFe-LDH and FS/ZnFe-LDH are used as lubricating additives of 10# WO, together with the organic matter in the white oil and the iron element in the friction pair, tribochemistry occurs under the combined action of the adsorption force and the tribochemical reaction, a friction protection film containing four elements of C, O, Fe, and Zn is formed on the surface of the wear scar, which effectively reduces the wear and reduces the friction coefficient.
