Electronic Structures and Lattice Dynamics of Layered BiOCl Single Crystals

Small-molecule intercalation induces defective generation of bromine-doped bismuth oxychloride to enhance photocatalytic degradation and detoxification of tetracycline

Photocatalysts are one of the effective methods to degrade antibiotic contamination, but the efficiency is low and the toxicity is not well recognized. Deep lattice doping to induce defect generation is an effective way to improve the performance of photocatalysts. Here, defect-rich bromine-doped BiOCl-XBr photocatalysts were constructed with the help of small molecules inserted into the interlayer. The photocatalytic degradation performance of BiOCl-XBr was significantly enhanced, and its degradation rate was up to about 12 times that of BiOCl monomer. The main reasons for the stronger photocatalytic performance of BiOCl-XBr include Br doping to enhance visible light absorption, surface defects, and Bi valence changes to improve charge transport. The degradation of tetracycline (TC) produced more toxic intermediates, and the biotoxicity experiments also confirmed that the toxicity showed a trend of increasing and then decreasing, indicating that the more toxic intermediates were also mineralized during the degradation process. However, the mortality and hatching rate of zebrafish in the exposed group after degradation recovered but changed their activity pattern under light and dark conditions. This further warns us to focus on the toxicity changes after antibiotic degradation. Finally, based on the free radical analysis, the mechanism of photocatalytic degradation and detoxification of TC by BiOCl-XBr was proposed.

Theoretical investigation of 2D/2D van der Waals SbPO4/BiOClxBr1-x heterojunctions for photocatalytic water splitting

Bismuth halogenoxide (BiOX)-based heterojunctions have garnered considerable attention recently due to their potential to enhance photocatalytic performance. However, the predominant focus on II-type heterojunctions has posed challenges in achieving the requisite band edge positions for efficient water splitting. In this investigation, stable van der Waals SbPO4/BiOClxBr1-x heterojunctions were constructed theoretically by using density-functional theory (DFT). Our findings demonstrate that SbPO4 can modulate the formation of Z-scheme heterojunctions with BiOClxBr1-x. The structural properties of BiOX were preserved, while reaching excellent photocatalytic capabilities with high redox capacities. Further investigation unveiled that the band edge positions of the heterojunctions fully satisfy the oxidation-reduction potential of water. Moreover, these heterojunctions exhibit notable absorption efficiency in the visible range, with absorption increasing as x decreases. Our research provides valuable theoretical insights for the experimental synthesis of high-performance BiOX-based photocatalysts for water splitting, leveraging the unique properties of SbPO4. These insights contribute to the advancement of clean energy technology.

Nanometric-Mapping and In Situ Quantification of Site-specific Photoredox Activities on 2D Nanoplates

Defective layered bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) exhibits excellent photocatalytic activities in water purification and environmental remediation. Herein, in situ single-molecule fluorescence microscopy is used to spatially resolve the photocatalytic heterogeneity and quantify the photoredox activities on individual structural features of BiOCl. The BiOCl nanoplates with respective dominant {001} and {010} facets (BOC-001 and BOC-010) are fabricated through tuning the pH of the solution. The corner position of BOC-001 exhibits the highest photo-oxidation turnover rate of 262.7 ± 30.8 s-1 µm-2, which is 2.1 and 65.7 times of those of edges and basal planes, respectively. A similar trend is also observed on BOC-010, which can be explained by the heterogeneous distribution of defects at each structure. Besides, BOC-001 shows a higher photoredox activity than BOC-010 at corners and edges. This can be attributed to the superior charge separation ability, active high-index facets of BOC-001, and its co-exposure of anisotropic facets steering the charge flow. Therefore, this work provides an effective strategy to understand the facet-dependent properties of single-crystalline materials at nanometer resolution. The quantification of site-specific photoredox activities on BiOCl nanoplates sheds more light on the design and optimization of 2D materials at the single-molecule level.

Modulation of Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction by n-p Codoping Engineering of Single-Atom Catalysts

Transition metal (TM) single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been widely applied in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. In this work, n-p codoping engineering is introduced to account for the modulation of photocatalytic CO2 reduction on a two-dimensional (2D) bismuth-oxyhalide-based cathode by using first-principles calculation. n-p codoping is established via the Coulomb interactions between the negatively charged TM SACs and the positively charged Cl vacancy (VCl) in the dopant-defect pairs. Based on the formation energy of charged defects, neutral dopant-defect pairs for the Fe, Co, and Ni SACs (PTM0) and the -1e charge state of the Cu SAC-based pair (PCu-1) are stable. The electrostatic attraction of the n-p codoping strengthens the stability and solubility of TM SACs by neutralizing the oppositely charged VCl defect and TM dopant. The n-p codoping stabilizes the electron accumulation around the TM SACs. Accumulated electrons modify the d-orbital alignment and shift the d-band center toward the Fermi level, enhancing the reducing capacity of TM SACs based on the d-band theory. Besides the electrostatic attraction of the n-p codoping, the PCu-1 also accumulates additional electrons surrounding Cu SACs and forms a half-occupied dx2-y2 state, which further upshifts the d-band center and improves photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The metastability of Cl multivacancies limits the concentration of the n-p pairs with Cl multivacancies (PTM@nCl (n > 1)). Positively charged centers around the PTM@nCl (n > 1) hinders the CO2 reduction by shielding the charge transfer to the CO2 molecule.

Outstanding photo-thermo synergy in aerobic oxidation of cyclohexane by bismuth tungstate-bismuth oxychloride high-low heterojunction

The difficulty of achieving both high conversion rate and high selectivity is a huge challenge in the catalytic aerobic oxidation of cyclohexane. In this paper, bismuth tungstate-bismuth oxychloride (Bi2WO6-BiOCl) nanoflower heterojunctions prepared via a one-step solvothermal process were applied in the photo-thermo synergetic catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane in the dried air. With the addition of little water at different reaction temperature, the ratio of bismuth to tungsten and the mass ratio of Bi2WO6 to BiOCl can be precisely tailored in the nanoflower sphere composites with thin nanosheets. Their microscopic morphology, elemental composition, crystal structure, and photoelectrochemical characteristics were explored by different characterization methods. The Bi2WO6-BiOCl composites possessed poor photocatalytic and thermal performances with the low conversion rates of 1.43% and 2.68%, respectively. However, through the photo-thermo catalytic oxidation process, an exceptional conversion rate of 13.32% was achieved with excellent selectivity of 99.22% for cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol (KA oil) using the same Bi2WO6-BiOCl composites. This superior performance outstrips Bi2WO6 flowers, BiOCl nanosheets and Bi2WO6-BiOCl composites with other compounding ratios. The creation of a high-low heterojunction in the Bi2WO6-BiOCl composite was confirmed by band energy analysis. The opto-electronic analysis, band energy analysis, sacrifice experiments, and active radical analysis were employed to elucidate the mechanism for the exceptional photo-thermo catalytic performance in detail. This work offers an exploratory solution to the challenges of high energy consumption and the difficulty in simultaneously achieving high selectivity and high conversion rates in cyclohexane oxidation, thus holding significant value.

Improved visible light triggered photocatalytic activities of BiOCl photocatalysts via a synergistic effect of doping and heterojunction engineering

To manipulate the photocatalytic activities of BiOCl photocatalysts, doping and heterojunction engineering are simultaneously adopted. Herein, the photocatalysts Sm3+-doped BiOCl and BiOCl:Sm3+@yg-C3N4 were designed, in which their phase structure, morphology, optical properties and photocatalytic activities were systematically discussed. Excited at 408 nm, red emissions are seen from Sm3+-doped BiOCl microplates and their intensities were impacted by doping content, reaching the maximum value when the Sm3+ content was 1 mol% and the involved concentration mechanism was dominated by quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. Through analyzing the degradation of TC, the visible light triggered photocatalytic behaviors of the resultant compounds were studied. Compared with BiOCl microplates, an improved TC removal ability was seen in Sm3+-doped BiOCl microplates and the products with a Sm3+ content of 0.5 mol% show the best performance. Moreover, through constructing the heterojunction with g-C3N4, the TC removal capacity was further enhanced and the BiOCl:Sm3+@60%g-C3N4 exhibits the optimal photocatalytic activity, which was also much better than that of the commercial SnO2 and TiO2. Accordingly, the ˙O2-, h+ and ˙OH active species were proven to contribute to the involved visible light driven photocatalytic mechanism. Furthermore, the separation and recombination of photogenerated carries via the Z-scheme transfer process in the designed heterojunction composites, led to splendid photocatalytic properties. Additionally, it was verified that the TC solution treated with synthesized compounds was nontoxic toward plant growth. Our findings may propose an available route to regulate the photocatalytic performance of the visible light driven photocatalysts.

Ferroelectric Polarization and Iron Substitution Synergistically Boost Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Bismuth Oxychloride Nanosheets

Ferroelectric materials have gained significant interest in various kinds of water splitting, but the study of ferroelectric materials for electrocatalytic water splitting is in its infancy. Ferroelectric materials have spontaneous polarization below their Curie temperature due to dipolar alignment, which results in surface charges. In 2D ferroelectric materials, spontaneous polarization depends on thickness. Herein, we report that thickness-dependent ferroelectric polarization in 2D nanosheets can also accelerate the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) along with the tailored active surface area of exposed crystalline facets, which improves the electrocatalytic activity relatively. Iron-substituted BiOCl nanosheets of varying thickness are fabricated by varying the pH using a facile coprecipitation method. The substituted iron enhances polarization and electrochemical active sites on the surface. The findings in this study show that the exposed (001) facet and higher thickness of the nanosheets have high ferroelectric polarization and, in turn, superior electrocatalytic activity and remarkable stability, requiring low overpotentials (348 mV and 270 mV at 100 mA/cm2 and 10 mA/cm2) in alkaline (1.0 M KOH) electrolyte. As the thickness of the nanosheets is decreased from 140 to 34 nm, the electrocatalytic performance of iron-substituted BiOCl nanosheets starts to reduce due to the lower Coulomb-Coulomb interaction and the increasing depolarization.

Enhancing UV-C Photoelectron Lifetimes for Avalanche-like Photocurrents in Carbon-Doped Bi3O4Cl Nanosheets

Interlayer electric fields in two-dimensional (2D) materials create photoelectron protecting barriers useful to mitigate electron-hole recombination. However, tuning the interlayer electric field remains challenging. Here, carbon-doped Bi₃O₄Cl (C:Bi₃O₄Cl) nanosheets are synthesized using a gas phase protocol, and n-type carriers are acquired as confirmed by the transconductance polarity of nanosheet field effect transistors. Thin C:Bi₃O₄Cl nanosheets show excellent 266 nm photodetector figures of merit, and an avalanche-like photocurrent is demonstrated. Decaying behaviors of photoelectrons pumped by a 266 nm laser pulse (266 nm photoelectrons) are observed using transient absorption spectroscopy, and a significant 266 nm photoelectron lifetime quality in C:Bi₃O₄Cl is presented. Built C:Bi₃O₄Cl models suggest that the interlayer electric field can be boosted by two different carbon substitutions at the inner and outer bismuth sites. This work reports a facile approach to increase the interlayer electric field in Bi₃O₄Cl for future UV-C photodetector applications.

Near-Ultraviolet Light-Driven Photocathodic Activity for (001)-Oriented BiOCl Thin Films Synthesized by Mist Chemical Vapor Deposition

Semitransparent and homogeneous bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) thin films with (001) preferred orientation were synthesized on polycrystalline Sn:In₂O₃-glass substrates by mist chemical vapor deposition. The films showed photocathodic activity even under near-ultraviolet light within the band gap due to the in-gap states induced by oxygen vacancies. Higher synthesis temperatures resulted in a significant increase of photocurrent density under ultraviolet light. While the longer lifetime of photocarriers led to an increase of internal quantum efficiency, the larger band-edge absorption significantly contributed to the higher external quantum efficiency.

Applications of BiOX in the Photocatalytic Reactions

BiOX (X = Cl, Br, I) families are a kind of new type of photocatalysts, which have attracted the attention of more and more researchers. The suitable band gaps and their convenient tunability via the change of X elements enable BiOX to adapt to many photocatalytic reactions. In addition, because of their characteristics of the unique layered structure and indirect bandgap semiconductor, BiOX exhibits excellent separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes. Therefore, BiOX could usually demonstrate fine activity in many photocatalytic reactions. In this review, we will present the various applications and modification strategies of BiOX in photocatalytic reactions. Finally, based on a good understanding of the above issues, we will propose the future directions and feasibilities of the reasonable design of modification strategies of BiOX to obtain better photocatalytic activity toward various photocatalytic applications.

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from glycerol-water mixture under visible light over zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn2S4) nanosheets grown on bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) microplates

ZnIn₂S₄ (ZIS) is one of the widely studied photocatalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution applications due to its prominent visible light response and strong reduction ability. However, its photocatalytic glycerol reforming performance for hydrogen evolution has never been reported. Herein, the visible light driven BiOCl@ZnIn₂S₄ (BiOCl@ZIS) composite was synthesized by growth of ZIS nanosheets on a template-like hydrothermally pre-prepared wide-band-gap BiOCl microplates using simple oil-bath method to be used for the first time for photocatalytic glycerol reforming for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). The optimum amount of BiOCl microplates in the composite was found 4 wt% (4% BiOCl@ZIS) in the presence of in-situ 1 wt% Pt deposition. Then, the in-situ Pt photodeposition optimization studies over 4% BiOCl@ZIS composite showed the highest PHE rate of 674 μmol g^-1h^-1 with the ultra-low platinum amount (0.0625 wt%). The possible mechanisms behind this improvement can be ascribed to the formation of Bi₂S₃ low-band-gap semiconductor during BiOCl@ZIS composite synthesis resulting in Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism between ZIS and Bi₂S₃ upon visible light irradiation. This work expresses not only the photocatalytic glycerol reforming over ZIS photocatalyst but also a solid proof of the contribution of wide-band-gap BiOCl photocatalysts to enhancement of ZIS PHE performance under visible light.

Fabrication of In-S-co-doped two-dimensional BiOCl coupling with surface hydroxylation toward simultaneously efficient charge separation and redox capability for photocatalytic water remediation

Tailoring energy band structure of bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl)-based photocatalysts by virtue of the metal and/or non-metal elements is one of the promising strategy to address environmental issues, especially plays a crucial role in water remediation. However, it still remains a great challenge to balance the light-harvesting and charge carriers separation. Herein, a feasible strategy was proposed for the simultaneous integration of energy-band modulation and surface hydroxylation to alleviate the as-mentioned contradiction and long-standing issues. By using a simple one-pot hydrothermal method, In-S-co-doped BiOCl photocatalyst coupling with surface hydroxylation (denoted as In/BOC-S-OH) was prepared by the simultaneous co-precipitation and ripening process and exhibited a good photocatalytic activity for removing tetracycline (TC) under visible light-irradiation than the counterparts of In-doped BiOCl (In/BOC), S-doped BiOCl (In/BOC-S) or surface -OH modification BiOCl (In/BOC-OH). Such satisfied photocatalytic efficiency benefits from the synergistic effect on the visible light capture, charge migration and separation associated with the introduction of intermediate energy levels and surface defect, respectively. Accompanying with the introduction of In and S hetero-atoms intercalation, both the potentials of valence and conduction bands were adjusted and the reduction of the bandgap could promote the capture of photons. Meanwhile, the powerful polarization effect associated with the non-uniform charge distribution could promote the special separation of carriers. More importantly, the surface defects induced by hydroxylation could act as traps for photogenerated electrons to stimulate the rapid separation of carriers, thereby causing the cleavage of antibiotics on the catalytic surface. This research offers a reliable strategy and promising scheme via effective solar energy conversion and charge carrier separation to advance photocatalytic wastewater remediation.

Excellent Medium-Temperature Thermoelectric Performance of Monolayer BiOCl

Recently, a ternary-layered material BiOCl has elicited intense interest in photocatalysis, environmental remediation, and ultraviolet light detection because of its unique band gap of around 3.6 eV, low toxicity, and earth abundance. In particular, Gibson et al. reported a measurement of the in-plane thermal conductivity of BiOCl experimentally using a four-point-probe method [Science, 373, 1017-1022 (2021)], which is only 1.25 W/m K at 300 K. Motivated by the work, we studied the thermoelectric property of monolayer BiOCl using first-principles calculations combined with the Boltzmann transport equation. The calculated phonon thermal conductivity of monolayer BiOCl is 3 W/m K at 300 K, which is far below that of other promising 2D thermoelectric materials like graphyne and MoS₂. A comprehensive analysis of phonon modes is conducted to reveal the low thermal conductivity. Moreover, the maximal ZT value is as high as 1.8 at 300 K and 5.7 at 800 K for the p-type doping with the 2 × 10¹⁵ cm^-2 concentration. More importantly, we found that the thermoelectric efficiency of such 2D materials is significantly enhanced to 8 at 800 K by applying 1.5% tensile strain, which clearly outperforms that of the reported 2D thermoelectric material SnSe. The results shed light on the promising application in medium-temperature (600-900 K) thermoelectric devices.

Operando Converting BiOCl into Bi2O2(CO3)xCly for Efficient Electrocatalytic Reduction of Carbon Dioxide to Formate

Bismuth-based materials (e.g., metallic, oxides and subcarbonate) are emerged as promising electrocatalysts for converting CO2 to formate. However, Bio-based electrocatalysts possess high overpotentials, while bismuth oxides and subcarbonate encounter stability issues. This work is designated to exemplify that the operando synthesis can be an effective means to enhance the stability of electrocatalysts under operando CO2RR conditions. A synthetic approach is developed to electrochemically convert BiOCl into Cl-containing subcarbonate (Bi2O2(CO3)xCly) under operando CO2RR conditions. The systematic operando spectroscopic studies depict that BiOCl is converted to Bi2O2(CO3)xCly via a cathodic potential-promoted anion-exchange process. The operando synthesized Bi2O2(CO3)xCly can tolerate - 1.0 V versus RHE, while for the wet-chemistry synthesized pure Bi2O2CO3, the formation of metallic Bio occurs at - 0.6 V versus RHE. At - 0.8 V versus RHE, Bi2O2(CO3)xCly can readily attain a FEHCOO- of 97.9%, much higher than that of the pure Bi2O2CO3 (81.3%). DFT calculations indicate that differing from the pure Bi2O2CO3-catalyzed CO2RR, where formate is formed via a *OCHO intermediate step that requires a high energy input energy of 2.69 eV to proceed, the formation of HCOO- over Bi2O2(CO3)xCly has proceeded via a *COOH intermediate step that only requires low energy input of 2.56 eV.

Designing Z-scheme AgIO4 nanorod embedded with Bi2S3 nanoflakes for expeditious visible light photodegradation of congo red and rhodamine B

The present study describes the enhanced photodegradation of organic pollutant dyes, congo red (CR) and rhodamine B (RhB) dyes under visible light irradiation. AgIO₄ nanorods decorated on Bi₂S₃ nanoflakes in various proportions were synthesized via sono-chemical route wherein the deposition of varying amounts of AgIO₄ on Bi₂S₃ plays a pivotal role in improving the photodegradation ability. The characterization of the as-synthesized nanohybrids was assessed by XRD, UV-vis DRS, PL, EIS, ESR, FT-IR, XPS, HR-TEM, FE-SEM, N₂ adsorption and desorption techniques. The effect of initial CR and RhB dye concentration, reaction pH and usage of nanohybrid concentration were investigated where 30%-AgIO₄/Bi₂S₃ exhibited excellent visible light photodegradation of 95.58% for CR and 96.11% for RhB dyes at 140 min and 100 min respectively. The superoxide (•O^2-) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) played predominant role in the photodegradation of CR and RhB which is experimentally confirmed by radical trapping experiments. Also, the photocatalysts exhibited good photo stability and excellent reusability. The TOC analysis confirmed the complete mineralization of CR and RhB dyes by the nanohybrid and the formation of possible intermediate and degradation pathway was delineated based on GC/MS analysis. The outstanding photodegradation performance were ascribed to the Z-scheme charge transfer path, which effectively promotes the separation and transfer of e^-/h⁺ pairs, resulting in a strong redox activity of the accumulated charge to decompose organic dyes during the degradation reaction. The study suggested that the nanohybrid can be utilized for the removal of organic pollutants from the contaminated water bodies.

Identification of two-dimensional layered dielectrics from first principles

To realize effective van der Waals (vdW) transistors, vdW dielectrics are needed in addition to vdW channel materials. We study the dielectric properties of 32 exfoliable vdW materials using first principles methods. We calculate the static and optical dielectric constants and discover a large out-of-plane permittivity in GeClF, PbClF, LaOBr, and LaOCl, while the in-plane permittivity is high in BiOCl, PbClF, and TlF. To assess their potential as gate dielectrics, we calculate the band gap and electron affinity, and estimate the leakage current through the candidate dielectrics. We discover six monolayer dielectrics that promise to outperform bulk HfO₂: HoOI, LaOBr, LaOCl, LaOI, SrI₂, and YOBr with low leakage current and low equivalent oxide thickness. Of these, LaOBr and LaOCl are the most promising and our findings motivate the growth and exfoliation of rare-earth oxyhalides for their use as vdW dielectrics.

Multiphoton Upconversion Materials for Photocatalysis and Environmental Remediation

Solar-driven photocatalysis holds great potential for energy conversion, environmental remediation, and sustainable chemistry. However, practical applications of conventional photocatalytic systems have been constrained by their insufficient ability to harvest solar radiation in the infrared spectrum. Lanthanide-doped upconversion materials possess high photostability, tunable absorption, and the ability to convert low-energy infrared radiation into high-energy emission, making them attractive for infrared-driven photocatalysis. This review highlights essential principles for rational design of efficient photocatalysts. Particular emphasis is placed on current state-of-the-arts that offer enhanced upconversion luminescence efficiency. We also summarize recent advances in lanthanide-doped upconversion materials for photocatalysis. We conclude with new challenges and prospects for future developments of infrared-driven photocatalysts.

Differences and Similarities of Photocatalysis and Electrocatalysis in Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials: Strategies, Traps, Applications and Challenges

Photocatalysis and electrocatalysis have been essential parts of electrochemical processes for over half a century. Recent progress in the controllable synthesis of 2D nanomaterials has exhibited enhanced catalytic performance compared to bulk materials. This has led to significant interest in the exploitation of 2D nanomaterials for catalysis. There have been a variety of excellent reviews on 2D nanomaterials for catalysis, but related issues of differences and similarities between photocatalysis and electrocatalysis in 2D nanomaterials are still vacant. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview on the differences and similarities of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis in the latest 2D nanomaterials. Strategies and traps for performance enhancement of 2D nanocatalysts are highlighted, which point out the differences and similarities of series issues for photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. In addition, 2D nanocatalysts and their catalytic applications are discussed. Finally, opportunities, challenges and development directions for 2D nanocatalysts are described. The intention of this review is to inspire and direct interest in this research realm for the creation of future 2D nanomaterials for photocatalysis and electrocatalysis.

BiOCl/group-IV Xene bilayer heterojunctions: stability and electronic and photocatalytic properties

Vertical van der Waals heterojunctions (HJs) composed of a photocatalytic star material BiOCl monolayer and group-IV Xene monolayer (silicene, germanene etc.) were studied by using first-principles calculations. Formation energy analysis and molecular dynamics simulation show that the BiOCl/Xene bilayer HJs can exist stably up to room temperature. Owing to evident charge redistribution and accumulation occurring between the bilayers, electron-hole puddles form and charge carrier transfer and separation occur in the HJs, which are beneficial to the improvement of photocatalytic performance. The HJ energy bands maintain the Dirac cones with almost linear dispersion curves, suggesting low effective mass and high mobility of carriers, and can be effectively tuned by strain. Our results show that the BiOCl/Xene bilayer HJs with high separation efficiency and high mobility of carriers and strain-adjustable bandgaps provide varieties in the functionalities of 2D van der Waals HJs and show great potentials in photocatalytic applications.

A hydrolysis synthesis route for (001)/(102) coexposed BiOCl nanosheets with high visible light-driven catalytic performance

The (001)/(102) co-exposed BiOCl nanosheet shows good adsorption of cationic dyes and high visible light-driven catalytic performance.
