Development of Stable Boron Nitride Nanotube and Hexagonal Boron Nitride Dispersions for Electrophoretic Deposition

Recent Progress in Fabrication and Application of BN Nanostructures and BN-Based Nanohybrids

Due to its unique physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, such as a low specific density, large specific surface area, excellent thermal stability, oxidation resistance, low friction, good dispersion stability, enhanced adsorbing capacity, large interlayer shear force, and wide bandgap, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanostructures are of great interest in many fields. These include, but are not limited to, (i) heterogeneous catalysts, (ii) promising nanocarriers for targeted drug delivery to tumor cells and nanoparticles containing therapeutic agents to fight bacterial and fungal infections, (iii) reinforcing phases in metal, ceramics, and polymer matrix composites, (iv) additives to liquid lubricants, (v) substrates for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, (vi) agents for boron neutron capture therapy, (vii) water purifiers, (viii) gas and biological sensors, and (ix) quantum dots, single photon emitters, and heterostructures for electronic, plasmonic, optical, optoelectronic, semiconductor, and magnetic devices. All of these areas are developing rapidly. Thus, the goal of this review is to analyze the critical mass of knowledge and the current state-of-the-art in the field of BN-based nanomaterial fabrication and application based on their amazing properties.

Composite Structural Supercapacitors: High-Performance Carbon Nanotube Supercapacitors through Ionic Liquid Localisation

Composite structural supercapacitors (SSC) are an attractive technology for aerospace vehicles; however, maintaining strength whilst adding energy storage to composite structures has been difficult. Here, SSCs were manufactured using aerospace-grade composite materials and CNT mat electrodes. A new design methodology was explored where the supercapacitor electrolyte was localised within the composite structure, achieving good electrochemical performance within the active region, whilst maintaining excellent mechanical performance elsewhere. The morphologies of these localised SSC designs were characterised with synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microscopy and synchrotron X-ray micro-computed tomography and could be directly correlated with both electrochemical and mechanical performance. One configuration used an ionogel with an ionic liquid (IL) electrolyte, which assisted localisation and achieved 2640 mW h kg⁻¹ at 8.37 W kg⁻¹ with a corresponding short beam shear (SBS) strength of 71.5 MPa in the active area. A separate configuration with only IL electrolyte achieved 758 mW h kg⁻¹ at 7.87 W kg⁻¹ with SBS strength of 106 MPa in the active area. Both configurations provide a combined energy and strength superior to results previously reported in the literature for composite SSCs.

Boron Nitride-Filled Linear Low-Density Polyethylene for Enhanced Thermal Transport: Continuous Extrusion of Micro-Textured Films

With shrinking size of electronic devices, increasing performance and accompanying heat dissipation, there is a need for efficient removal of this heat through packaging materials. Polymer materials are attractive packaging materials given their low density and electrical insulating properties, but they lack sufficient thermal conductivity that inhibits heat transfer rate. Hexagonal boron nitride (BN) possesses excellent thermal conductivity and is also electrically insulating, therefore BN-filled polymer composites were investigated in this study. Results showed successful continuous extrusion of BN-filled linear low-density polyethylene through micro-textured dies that is a scalable manufacturing process. Through-thickness thermal conductivity measurements established that 30 vol% BN content led to an over 500% increase in thermal conductivity over that of pure polymer. Textured film surface provided about a 50% increase in surface area when compared with non-textured films. This combination of increased surface area and enhanced thermal conductivity of BN-filled textured films indicates their potential application for improved convective thermal transport.

Interaction of DNA-Complexed Boron Nitride Nanotubes and Cosolvents Impacts Dispersion and Length Characteristics

Processing boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) for applications ranging from nanomedicine to electronics generally requires dispersions of nanotubes that are stable in various compounds and solvents. We show that alcohol/water cosolvents, particularly isopropyl alcohol (IPA), are essential for the complexation of BNNTs with DNA under mild bath sonication. The resulting DNA-wrapped BNNT complexes are highly stable during purification and solvent exchange from cosolvents to water, providing potential for the versatile liquid-phase processing of BNNTs. Via molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that IPA assists in the solvation of BNNTs due to its pseudosurfactant nature by verifying that water is replaced in the solvation layer as IPA is added. We quantify the solvation free energy of BNNTs in various IPA/water mixtures and observe a nonmonotonic trend, highlighting the importance of utilizing solvent-nanotube interactions in nanomaterial dispersions. Additionally, we show that nanotube lengths can be characterized by rheology measurements via determining the viscosity of dilute dispersions of DNA-BNNTs. This represents the bulk sample property in the liquid state, as compared to conventional imaging techniques that require surface deposition and drying. Our results also demonstrate that BNNT dispersions exhibit the rheological behavior of dilute Brownian rigid rods, which can be further exploited for the controlled processing and property enhancement of BNNT-enabled assemblies such as films and fibers.

Boron nitride-based materials for water purification: Progress and outlook

Analogous to the carbon family, boron nitride (BN)-based materials have gained considerable attention in recent times for applications in various fields. Owing to their extraordinary characteristics, i.e., high surface area, low density, superior thermal stability, mechanical strength, and conductivity, excellent corrosion, and oxidation resistance, the BN nanomaterials have been explored in water remediation. This article critically evaluates the latest development in applications of BN-based materials in water purification with focus on adsorption, synthesis of novel membranes and photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. The adsorption of various noxious pollutants, i.e., dyes, organic compounds, antibiotics, and heavy metals from aqueous medium BN-based materials are described in detail by illustrating the adsorption mechanism and regeneration potential. The major hurdles and opportunities related to the synthesis and water purification applications of BN-based materials are underscored. Finally, a roadmap is suggested for future research to assure the effective applications of BN-based materials in water purification. This review is beneficial in understanding the current status of these unique materials in water purification and accelerating the research focusing their future water remediation applications.
