Peering into the Formation of Cerium Oxide Colloidal Particles in Solution by In Situ Small-Angle X-ray Scattering

Globular pattern formation of hierarchical ceria nanoarchitectures

Dissipative structures often appear as an unstable counterpart of ordered structures owing to fluctuations that do not form a homogeneous phase. Even a multiphase mixture may simultaneously undergo one chemical reaction near equilibrium and another one that is far from equilibrium. Here, we observed in real time crystal seed formation and simultaneous nanocrystal aggregation proceeding from CeIV complexes to CeO2 nanoparticles in an acidic aqueous solution, and investigated the resultant hierarchical nanoarchitecture. The formed particles exhibited two very different size ranges, resulting in further pattern formation with opalescence. The hierarchically assembled structures in solutions were CeO2 colloids, viz. primary core clusters (1-3 nm) of crystalline ceria and secondary clusters (20-30 nm) assembled through surface ions. Such self-assembly is widespread in multi-component complex fluids, paradoxically moderating hierarchical reactions. Stability and instability are not only critical but also complementary for co-optimisation around the nearby free energy landscape prior to bifurcation.

Cerium Nanophases from Cerium Ammonium Nitrate

Ceria nanomaterials with facile CeIII/IV redox behavior are used in sensing, catalytic, and therapeutic applications, where inclusion of CeIII has been correlated with reactivity. Understanding assembly pathways of CeO2 nanoparticles (NC-CeO2) in water has been challenged by "blind" synthesis, including rapid assembly/precipitation promoted by heat or strong base. Here, we identify a layered phase denoted Ce-I with a proposed formula CeIV(OH)3(NO3)·xH2O (x ≈ 2.5), obtained by adding electrolytes to aqueous cerium ammonium nitrate (CAN) to force precipitation. Ce-I represents intermediate hydrolysis species between dissolved CAN and NC-CeO2, where CAN is a commonly used CeIV compound that exhibits unusual aqueous and organic solubility. Ce-I features Ce-(OH)2-Ce units, representing the first step of hydrolysis toward NC-CeO2 formation, challenging prior assertions about CeIV hydrolysis. Structure/composition of poorly crystalline Ce-I was corroborated by a pair distribution function, Ce-L3 XAS (X-ray absorption spectroscopy), compositional analysis, and 17O nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Formation of Ce-I and its transformation to NC-CeO2 is documented in solution by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and in the solid-state by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and powder X-ray diffraction. Morphologies identified by TEM support form factor models for SAXS analysis, evidencing the incipient assembly of Ce-I. Finally, two morphologies of NC-CeO2 are identified. Sequentially, spherical NC-CeO2 particles coexist with Ce-I, and asymmetric NC-CeO2 with up to 35% CeIII forms at the expense of Ce-I, suggesting direct replacement.

Tuning Mesopore Accessibility of Ce0.18Zr0.64Y0.15La0.03O2-δ by Hydrothermal Post-treatment─A Case Study for Ceria-Based Oxidation Storage Materials

The connectivity and thermal stability of pores in heterogeneous, mesoporous metal oxide catalysts are key properties controlling their (long-term) efficacy. In this study, we investigate the influence of pH and temperature during a common hydrothermal aftertreatment step in the synthesis of mesoporous CexZr1-x-y-zYyLazO2-δ oxides obtained from molecular precursors via hydrothermal synthesis. This study has a strong focus on the methodological approach, elucidating whether and how even the smallest changes in morphology and connectivity may be unraveled and related to the underlying chemical processes to uncover key parameters for the ongoing improvement of material properties. Deep insights into the mesopore space were obtained by state-of-the-art physisorption (including hysteresis scanning), electron tomography, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis. We also provide a simple tool to simulate SAXS curves from electron tomography data that allow direct comparison to experimentally obtained SAXS curves. Furthermore, the impact on surface-bound nitrate groups and the development during calcination were studied in detail by thermogravimetric analysis coupled with mass spectrometry. The key observations indicate a significant increase in thermal stability at temperatures as high as 1050 °C and improved mesopore accessibility with an increase in pH of the aftertreatment solution. The combined observations from the employed methods suggest a pH-dependent removal of surface-bound nitrate groups as well as a dissolution and reprecipitation-based fusing of the primary particles that constitute the mesopore skeleton. This transformation yields a mechanically and thermally stronger mesopore space with the capability to endure high temperatures.

In Situ Kinetic Observations on Crystal Nucleation and Growth

Nucleation and growth are critical steps in crystallization, which plays an important role in determining crystal structure, size, morphology, and purity. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms of nucleation and growth is crucial to realize the controllable fabrication of crystalline products with desired and reproducible properties. Based on classical models, the initial crystal nucleus is formed by the spontaneous aggregation of ions, atoms, or molecules, and crystal growth is dependent on the monomer's diffusion and the surface reaction. Recently, numerous in situ investigations on crystallization dynamics have uncovered the existence of nonclassical mechanisms. This review provides a summary and highlights the in situ studies of crystal nucleation and growth, with a particular emphasis on the state-of-the-art research progress since the year 2016, and includes technological advances, atomic-scale observations, substrate- and temperature-dependent nucleation and growth, and the progress achieved in the various materials: metals, alloys, metallic compounds, colloids, and proteins. Finally, the forthcoming opportunities and challenges in this fascinating field are discussed.

Facile Synthesis of Stable Cerium Dioxide Sols in Nonpolar Solvents

A method is proposed for the preparation of stable sols of nanocrystalline cerium dioxide in nonpolar solvents, based on surface modification of CeO2 nanoparticles obtained by thermal hydrolysis of concentrated aqueous solutions of ammonium cerium(IV) nitrate with residues of 2-ethylhexanoic and octanoic acids. The synthesis was carried out at temperatures below 100 °C and did not require the use of expensive and toxic reagents. An assessment of the radical-scavenging properties of the obtained sols using the superoxide anion-radical neutralization model revealed that they demonstrate notable antioxidant activity. The results obtained indicate the potential of the nanoscale cerium dioxide sols in nonpolar solvents to be used for creating nanobiomaterials possessing antioxidant properties.

Comprehensive Characterization of a Mesoporous Cerium Oxide Nanomaterial with High Surface Area and High Thermal Stability

In the present study, the pore space of a mesoporous cerium oxide material is investigated, which forms by the self-assembly of primary particles into a spherical secondary structure possessing a disordered mesopore space. The material under study exhibits quite stable mesoporosity upon aging at high temperatures (800 °C) and is, thus, of potential interest in high-temperature catalysis. Here, different characterization techniques were applied to elucidate the structural evolution taking place between heat treatment at 400 °C and aging at 800 °C, i.e., in a water-containing atmosphere, which is usually detrimental to nanoscaled porosity. The changes in the mesoporosity were monitored by advanced physisorption experiments, including hysteresis scanning, and electron tomography analysis coupled with a 3D reconstruction of the mesopore space. These methods indicate that the 3D spatial arrangement of the primary particles during the synthesis under hydrothermal conditions via thermal hydrolysis is related to the thermal stability of the hierarchical mesopore structure. The assembly of the primary CeO₂ particles (∼4 nm in size) results in an interparticulate space constituting an open 3D mesopore network, as revealed by skeleton analysis of tomography data, being in conformity with hysteresis scanning. At elevated temperatures (800 °C), sinter processes occur resulting in the growth of the primary particles, but the 3D mesopore network and the spherical secondary structure are preserved.
