Synthesis of Silanol-Rich MCM-48 with Mixed Surfactants and Their Application in Acetone Adsorption: Equilibrium, Kinetic, and Thermodynamic Studies

New Porous Carbon Material Derived from Carbon Microspheres Assembled in Hollow Carbon Spheres and Its Application to Toluene Adsorption

In this paper, a new porous carbon material adsorbent was prepared using carbon microspheres assembled in hollow carbon spheres (HCS) with a hydrothermal method. Transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the adsorbents. It was found that the diameter of carbon microspheres derived from 0.1 mol/L glucose was about 130 nm, which could be inserted inside HCS (pore size was 370-450 nm). The increase in glucose concentration would promote the diameter of carbon microspheres (CSs), and coarse CSs could not be loaded in the mesopores or macropores of HCS. Thus, the C_0.1@HCS adsorbent had the highest Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area (1945 m²/g) and total pore volume (1.627 cm³/g). At the same time, C_0.1@HCS posed a suitable ratio of micropores and mesopores, which could provide adsorption sites and volatile organic compound diffusion channels. Moreover, oxygen-containing functional groups -OH and C═O in CSs were also introduced into HCS, and the adsorption capacity and regenerability performance of the adsorbents were improved. The dynamic adsorption capacity of C_0.1@HCS for toluene reached 813 mg/g, and the Bangham model was more suitable for describing the toluene adsorption process. The adsorption capacity was stably kept above 770 mg/g after eight adsorption-desorption cycles.

Adsorption of acetone, ethyl acetate and toluene by beta zeolite/diatomite composites: preparation, characterization and adsorbability

The hierarchical porous composites (Beta/Dt) were prepared by secondary growth method using natural diatomite and beta zeolite. Moreover, XRD, SEM, and BET characterize the composite's composition, surface structure, and pore structure. The adsorbability of Beta/Dt was evaluated by adsorption of three common volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of the printing industry: acetone, ethyl acetate, and toluene. The results show that under the optimum preparation condition, the adsorption capacities of the three VOCs on Beta/Dt were about 3.5 times those of pure beta zeolite and 4.7-35.3 times those of diatomite, respectively. It indicates the synergistic adsorption effect between beta zeolite and diatomite. The superior adsorption capacity of Beta/Dt can be attributed to the suitable micropore size, the increase of the diffusion channels, and the chemical adsorption on modification diatomite. The adsorption of acetone, ethyl acetate, and toluene on Beta/Dt conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In contrast, adsorption isotherms conformed to the Langmuir model, meaning that both physical and chemical adsorption occurred simultaneously during the adsorption process, and the adsorption belonged to the monolayer adsorption. The chemical adsorption mechanism can be ascribed to the nucleophilic reaction between the three VOCs (acetone, ethyl acetate, and toluene) and Beta/Dt with positive charges resulting from the modification diatomite. Furthermore, the composite could still keep more than 90% of the adsorption capacity of the original adsorbent after five regeneration cycles.

Engineering mesoporous silica nanoparticles towards oral delivery of vancomycin

Vancomycin (Van) is a key antibiotic of choice for the treatment of systemic methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. However, due to its poor membrane permeability, it is administered parenterally, adding to the cost and effort of treatment. The poor oral bioavailability of Van is mainly due to its physico-chemical properties that limit its paracellular and transcellular transport across gastrointestinal (GI) epithelium. Herein we report the development of silica nanoparticles (SNPs)-based formulations that are able to enhance the epithelial permeability of Van. We synthesized SNPs of different pore sizes (2 nm and 9 nm) and modified their surface charge and polarity by attaching different functional groups (-NH₂, -PO₃, and -CH₃). Van was loaded within these SNPs at a loading capacity in the range of ca. 18-29 wt%. The Van-loaded SNPs exhibited a controlled release behaviour when compared to un-encapsulated Van which showed rapid release due to its hydrophilic nature. Among Van-loaded SNPs, SNPs with large pores showed a prolonged release compared to SNPs with small pores while SNPs functionalised with -CH₃ groups exhibited a slowest release among the functionalised SNPs. Importantly, Van-loaded SNPs, especially the large pore SNPs with negative charge, enhanced the permeability of Van across an epithelial cell monolayer (Caco-2 cell model) by up to 6-fold, with P_app values up to 1.716 × 10^-5 cm s^-1 (vs. 0.304 × 10^-5 cm s^-1 for un-encapsulated Van) after 3 h. The enhancement was dependent on both the type of SNPs and their surface functionalisation. The permeation enhancing effect of SNPs was due to its ability to transiently open the tight junctions measured by decrease in transepithelial resistance (TEER) which was reversible after 3 h. All in all, our data highlights the potential of SNPs (especially SNPs with large pores) for oral delivery of Van or other antimicrobial peptides.
