Halogen Bonding in Bicomponent Monolayers: Self-Assembly of a Homologous Series of Iodinated Perfluoroalkanes with Bipyridine

Toward Two-Dimensional Tessellation through Halogen Bonding between Molecules and On-Surface-Synthesized Covalent Multimers

The ability to engineer sophisticated two-dimensional tessellation organic nanoarchitectures based on triangular molecules and on-surface-synthesized covalent multimers is investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. 1,3,5-Tris(3,5-dibromophenyl)benzene molecules are deposited on high-temperature Au(111) surfaces to trigger Ullmann coupling. The self-assembly into a semi-regular rhombitrihexagonal tiling superstructure not only depends on the synthesis of the required covalent building blocks but also depends on their ratio. The organic tessellation nanoarchitecture is achieved when the molecules are deposited on a Au(111) surface at 145 °C. This halogen-bonded structure is composed of triangular domains of intact molecules separated by rectangular rows of covalent dimers. The nearly hexagonal vertices are composed of covalent multimers. The experimental observations reveal that the perfect semi-regular rhombitrihexagonal tiling cannot be engineered because it requires, in addition to the dimers and intact molecules, the synthesis of covalent hexagons. This building block is only observed above 165 °C and does not coexist with the other required organic buildings blocks.

How does tuning the van der Waals bonding strength affect adsorbate structure?

Organic molecular thin-films are employed for manufacturing a wide variety of electronic devices, including memory devices and transistors. A precise description of the atomic-scale interactions in aromatic carbon systems is of paramount importance for the design of organic thin-films and carbon-based nanomaterials. Here we investigate the binding and structure of pyrazine on graphite with neutron diffraction and spin-echo measurements. Diffraction data of the ordered phase of deuterated pyrazine, (C₄D₄N₂), adsorbed on the graphite (0001) basal plane surface are compared to scattering simulations and complemented by van der Waals corrected density functional theory calculations. The lattice constant of pyrazine on graphite is found to be (6.06 ± 0.02) Å. Compared to benzene (C₆D₆) adsorption on graphite, the pyrazine overlayer appears to be much more thermodynamically stable, up to 320 K, and continues in layer-by-layer growth. Both findings suggest a direct correlation between the intensity of van der Waals bonding and the stability of the self-assembled overlayer because the nitrogen atoms in the six-membered ring of pyrazine increase the van der Waals bonding in comparison to benzene, which only contains carbon atoms.

2D constraint modifies packing behaviour: a halobenzene monolayer with X3 halogen-bonding motif

Using a combination of X-ray diffraction and simulation techniques, we are able to identify a crystalline monolayer of 1,3,5-triiodotrifluorobenzene formed on graphite. The monolayer is found to exhibit an incommensurate hexagonal unit cell with a lattice parameter of 9.28(7) Å, exhibiting a trigonal arrangement of iodine atoms not found in the bulk structure. DFT simulations have been performed exhibiting close agreement with the experimental structure. Importantly these simulations can be used to compare the strength of the intermolecular interactions both with and without Van der Waals corrections. Thus it is possible to estimate that halogen bonding consists of approximately half the total interaction energy. This demonstrates that despite the presence of strong directional non-covalent bonding, dispersion interactions account for a very significant proportion of the total energy.
