Influences of Polymer-Surfactant Interaction on the Drop Formation Process: An Experimental Study

Research Progress of Molecular Simulation in Acrylamide Polymers with High Degree of Polymerization

Acrylamide polymers with a high degree of polymerization are widely used in petroleum production. It is of great significance to study the oil displacement mechanism of acrylamide polymers with a high degree of polymerization from the micro level. In recent years, the rapid development of computer molecular simulation technology has filed the gaps in macroscopic experiments and theories. This technology has been highly valued in the study of the molecular behaviour of polymer systems. In this paper, the research progress of molecular simulation applied to high-polymerization-degree acrylamide polymer is summarized. The application status of acrylamide polymer flooding, the analysis of polymer flooding mechanisms, and the research progress of molecular simulation in acrylamide linear and crosslinked polymers are expounded. Finally, the development prospect of acrylamide polymer research is given, and suggestions are put forward in terms of simulation direction and simulation tools.

Dynamics of Droplet Pinch-Off at Emulsified Oil-Water Interfaces: Interplay between Interfacial Viscoelasticity and Capillary Forces

The presence of submicrometer structures at liquid-fluid interfaces modifies the properties of many science and technological systems by lowering the interfacial tension, creating tangential Marangoni stresses, and/or inducing surface viscoelasticity. Here we experimentally study the break-up of a liquid filament of a silica nanoparticle dispersion in a background oil phase that contains surfactant assemblies. Although self-similar power-law pinch-off is well documented for threads of Newtonian fluids, we report that when a viscoelastic layer is formed in situ at the interface, the pinch-off dynamics follows an exponential decay. Recently, such exponential neck thinning was found theoretically when surface viscous effects were taken into account. We introduce a simple approach to calculate the effective relaxation time of viscoelastic interfaces and estimate the thickness of the interfacial layer and the viscoelastic properties of liquid-fluid interfaces, where the direct measurement of interfacial rheology is not possible.

Interfacial instabilities in Marangoni-driven spreading of polymer solutions on soap films

HYPOTHESIS

Tuning and controlling the flow behavior of multi-component liquids has been a long-lasting struggle in various technological applications. Here, we studied Marangoni spreading of a polymer-surfactant ternary solution when deposited on a soap film with higher surface tension. The spreading front becomes unstable into a fingering pattern above the entanglement concentration of the polymer solution, indicating that the interplay between the elastic and interfacial properties drives the instability. Balancing these terms results in a critical length scale for the onset of the instability.

EXPERIMENTS

To investigate the connection between the rheological characteristics of the samples and the origins of the instabilities, various rheological tests were performed. Elastic and loss modulus of the samples were measured within the linear viscoelastic regime. The spreading behavior of the solutions was studied using high-speed imaging techniques.

FINDINGS

At low concentrations of polymers, spreading dynamics are governed by surface tension gradient and viscous dissipation leading to a stable front growing linearly in time. However, above the entanglement concentration of polymers spreading front destabilizes into a daisy shape pattern suggesting the elastic forces dominating the spreading dynamics. We introduced a length scale that precisely predicts the onset of the instability.

Aggregation behavior and thermodynamic properties of the mixture of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide in numerous temperatures and mixed solvents

Interaction of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB; cationic in nature) in H2O and additives (alcohols and diols) media has been investigated using conductivity technique. The micellar parameters such as critical micelle concentration (cmc), fraction of counter ion binding (β), thermodynamic parameters, transfer properties, and enthalpy-entropy compensation parameters of CTAB + SCMC mixture have been assessed in water and aq. alcohols/diols media. One cmc value was achieved for CTAB + SCMC mixtures in the entire circumstances and the attendance of SCMC disfavors the CTAB micellization. The cmc values were obtained to be greater in alcohols and diols media compared to H2O medium. The cmc values also exhibit a dependency on the solvent composition and temperature variation. In all the cases, the ΔG 0 m values were achieved to be negative which signifying the spontaneous formation of micelles while the extent of spontaneity is decreased in alcohols and diols media. Both the ΔH 0 m and ΔS 0 m reveal that hydrophobic, ion-dipole as well as electrostatic interactions are the proposed binding forces between CTAB and SCMC. The compensation parameters (ΔH 0* m and T c ) are in decent agreement with the biological fluid.
