Impact of the Surface and Microstructure on the Lubricative Properties of MoS2 Aging under Different Environments

Coupled Lipidomics and Digital Pathology as an Effective Strategy to Identify Novel Adverse Outcome Pathways in Eisenia fetida Exposed to MoS2 Nanosheets and Ionic Mo

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) nanosheets are increasingly applied in several fields, but effective and accurate strategies to fully characterize potential risks to soil ecosystems are lacking. We introduce a coelomocyte-based in vivo exposure strategy to identify novel adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) and molecular endpoints from nontransformed (NTMoS₂) and ultraviolet-transformed (UTMoS₂) MoS₂ nanosheets (10 and 100 mg Mo/L) on the earthworm Eisenia fetida using nontargeted lipidomics integrated with transcriptomics. Machine learning-based digital pathology analysis coupled with phenotypic monitoring was further used to establish the correlation between lipid profiling and whole organism effects. As an ionic control, Na₂MoO₄ exposure significantly reduced (61.2-79.5%) the cellular contents of membrane-associated lipids (glycerophospholipids) in earthworm coelomocytes. Downregulation of the unsaturated fatty acid synthesis pathway and leakage of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) verified the Na₂MoO₄-induced membrane stress. Compared to conventional molybdate, NTMoS₂ inhibited genes related to transmembrane transport and caused the differential upregulation of phospholipid content. Unlike NTMoS₂, UTMoS₂ specifically upregulated the glyceride metabolism (10.3-179%) and lipid peroxidation degree (50.4-69.4%). Consequently, lipolytic pathways were activated to compensate for the potential energy deprivation. With pathology image quantification, we report that UTMoS₂ caused more severe epithelial damage and intestinal steatosis than NTMoS₂, which is attributed to the edge effect and higher Mo release upon UV irradiation. Our results reveal differential AOPs involving soil sentinel organisms exposed to different Mo forms, demonstrating the potential of liposome analysis to identify novel AOPs and furthermore accurate soil risk assessment strategies for emerging contaminants.

Frictional properties of MoS2 on a multi-level rough wall under starved lubrication

Owing to nano-MoS₂'s excellent anti-friction and anti-wear properties, nano-MoS₂, which can act as a nano-additive in lubricating oil or solid lubricants, is believed to have great potential in the lubrication of power machinery and moving parts of a spacecraft. The molecular dynamics method was used to construct a rough surface and a multi-level asperity structure to simulate starved lubrication before oil film breakdown, and the lubrication mechanism of MoS₂ as a nano-additive or directly coated on the textured surface could reduce the friction coefficient and wear was explained from the atomic perspective. Simulations showed that the multilayer MoS₂ played a role of load-bearing at light load or low velocity, and slipped into the grooves to repair the surface under heavy load or high velocity. Even if local asperity contact occurs, MoS₂ nanoparticles could accelerate the detachment of the initial asperity contact to prevent large-scale adhesion. The MoS₂ nanoparticles transformed the pure liquid oil film into a liquid-solid composite oil film, which was more suitable for lubrication under heavy load and high velocity because it increased the contact area, protected the friction surface and prevented asperity contact. The proposed lubrication mechanism contributes to understanding the frictional properties of layered nanomaterials under extreme conditions and provides a reference for further application of MoS₂ materials in the field of lubrication.

Tuning the Chemical and Mechanical Properties of Conductive MoS2 Thin Films by Surface Modification with Aryl Diazonium Salts

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a promising material for applications in sensors, energy storage, energy conversion devices, solar cells, and fuel cells. Because many of those applications require conductive materials, we recently developed a method for preparing a conductive form of MoS2 (c-MoS2) using dilute aqueous hydrogen peroxide in a simple and safe way. Here, we investigate modulating the chemical and mechanical surface properties of c-MoS2 thin films using diazonium chemistry. In addition to a direct passivation strategy of c-MoS2 with diazonium salts for electron-withdrawing groups, we also propose a novel in situ synthetic pathway for modification with electron-donating groups. The obtained results are examined by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The degree of surface passivation of pristine and functionalized c-MoS2 films was tested by exposing them to aqueous solutions of different metal cations (Fe2+, Zn2+, Cu2+, and Co2+) and detecting the chemiresistive response. While pristine films were found to interact with several of the cations, modified films did not. We propose that a surface charge transfer mechanism is responsible for the chemiresistive response of the pristine films, while both modification routes succeeded at complete surface passivation. Functionalization was also found to lower the coefficient of friction for semiconducting 2H-MoS2, while all conductive materials (modified or not) also had lower coefficients of friction. This opens up a pathway to a palette of dry lubricant materials with improved chemical stability and tunable conductivity. Thus, both in situ and direct diazonium chemistries are powerful tools for tuning chemical and mechanical properties of conductive MoS2 for new devices and lubricants based on conductive MoS2.
