Abstract
It is a daunting task to prepare polyolefin nanocomposites that contain well-exfoliated nanoplatelets due to the nonpolar and high crystallinity nature of polyolefins. In this research, a robust approach was developed to prepare polyethylene (PE) nanocomposites by grafting maleated polyethylene (MPE) onto pre-exfoliated α-zirconium phosphate (ZrP) nanoplatelets via a simple amine-anhydride reaction to form ZrP-g-MPE. Several variables, including maleic anhydride (MA) content, MPE graft density, MPE molecular weight, and PE matrix crystallinity, were investigated to determine how they influence ZrP-g-MPE dispersion in PE. It was found that grafted PE has a different morphology and that the long PE brushes with medium graft density on ZrP can achieve sufficient chain entanglement and cocrystallization with PE matrix to stabilize and maintain ZrP-g-MPE dispersion after solution or melt mixing. This leads to enhanced Young's modulus, yield stress, and ductility. The structure-property relationship of PE/ZrP-g-MPE nanocomposites and usefulness of this study for the preparation of high-performance polyolefin nanocomposites are discussed.

Abstract
Nanocomposites with unusual and superior properties often contain well-dispersed nanoparticles. Polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS, offers a fluidlike or rubbery (when cross-linked) response, which complements the high-modulus nature of inorganic nanofillers. Systems using PDMS as the nanoparticulate, rather than the continuous, phase are rare because it is difficult to make PDMS nanoparticles. Aqueous dispersions of hydrophobic polymer nanoparticles must survive the considerable contrast in hydrophobicity between water and the polymer component. This challenge is often met with a shell of hydrophilic polymer or by adding surfactant. In the present work, two critical advances for making and using aqueous colloidal dispersions of PDMS are reported. First, PDMS nanoparticles with charged amino end groups were prepared by flash nanoprecipitation in aqueous solutions. Adding a negative polyelectrolyte, poly(styrene sulfonate), PSS, endowed the nanoparticles with a glassy shell, stabilizing them against aggregation. Second, when compressed into a nanocomposite, the small amount of PSS leads to a large increase in bulk modulus. X-ray scattering studies revealed the hierarchical nanostructuring within the composite, with a 4 nm PDMS micelle as the smallest unit. This class of nanoparticle and nanocomposite presents a new paradigm for stabilizing liquidlike building blocks for nanomaterials.

Preparation of Zirconium Hydrogen Phosphate Coatings on Sandblasted/Acid-Etched Titanium for Enhancing Its Osteoinductivity and Friction/Corrosion Resistance. Int J Nanomedicine 2022; 16:8265-8277. Abstract
Background Sandblasted/acid-etched titanium (SLA-Ti) implants are widely used for dental implant restoration in edentulous patients. However, the poor osteoinductivity and the large amount of Ti particles/ions released due to friction or corrosion will affect its long-term success rate. Purpose Various zirconium hydrogen phosphate (ZrP) coatings were prepared on SLA-Ti surface to enhance its friction/corrosion resistance and osteoinduction. Methods The mixture of ZrCl4 and H3PO4 was first coated on SLA-Ti and then calcined at 450°C for 5 min to form ZrP coatings. In addition to a series of physiochemical characterization such as morphology, roughness, wettability, and chemical composition, their capability of anti-friction and anti-corrosion were further evaluated by friction-wear test and by potential scanning. The viability and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells on different substrates were investigated via MTT, mineralization and PCR assays. Results The characterization results showed that there were no significant changes in the morphology, roughness and wettability of ZrP-modified samples (SLA-ZrP0.5 and SLA-ZrP0.7) compared with SLA group. The results of electrochemical corrosion displayed that both SLA-ZrP0.5 and SLA-ZrP0.7 (especially the latter) had better corrosion resistance than SLA in normal saline and serum-containing medium. SLA-ZrP0.7 also exhibited the best friction resistance and great potential to enhance the spreading, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. Conclusion We determined that SLA-ZrP0.7 had excellent comprehensive properties including anti-corrosion, anti-friction and osteoinduction, which made it have a promising clinical application in dental implant restoration.
