Oppositely charged surfactants and nanoparticles at the air-water interface: Influence of surfactant to nanoparticle ratio

HYPOTHESIS

The interactions between oppositely charged nanoparticles and surfactants can significantly influence the interfacial properties of the system. Traditionally, in the study of such systems, the nanoparticle concentration is varied while the surfactant concentration is kept constant, or vice versa. However, we believe that a defined variation of both components' concentration is necessary to accurately assess their effects on the interfacial properties of the system. We argue that the effect of nanoparticle-surfactant complexes can only be properly evaluated by keeping the surfactant to nanoparticle ratio constant.

EXPERIMENTS

Zeta potential, dynamic light scattering, high amplitude surface pressure and surface tension measurements are employed synergistically to characterize the interfacial properties of the nanoparticle-surfactant system. Interferometric experiments are performed to highlight the effect of surface concentration on the stability of thin liquid films.

FINDINGS

The interfacial properties of surfactant/nanoparticle mixtures are primarily determined by the surfactant/nanoparticle ratio. Below a certain ratio, free surfactant molecules are removed from the solution by the formation of surfactant-nanoparticle complexes. Surprisingly, even though the concentration and hydrophobicity of these complexes do not seem to have a noticeable impact on the surface tension, they do significantly affect the rheological properties of the interface. Above this ratio, free surfactant monomers and nanoparticle-surfactant complexes coexist and can co-adsorb at the interface, changing both the interfacial tension and the interfacial rheology, and thus, for example, the foamability and foam stability of the system.

Formation of Droplets of Shear-Thinning Non-Newtonian Fluids in Asymmetrical Parallelized Microchannels

Fluids containing polymers are frequently utilized in the chemical industry and exhibit shear-thinning characteristics. The flow distribution of non-Newtonian fluids in parallelized microchannels is a key issue to be solved during numbering-up. Numbering-up means increasing the number of parallelized microchannels. In this study, a high-speed camera is used to explore the distribution of fluid flow as well as the uniformity and stability of droplets in conceptual asymmetrical parallelized microchannels. Cyclohexane and carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC) aqueous solutions are used as the continuous phase and dispersed phase, respectively. The effects of fluctuation of pressure difference around the T-junction, the hydrodynamic resistance in microchannels, and the shear-thinning property of fluids on flow distribution and droplet formation are revealed. The uniformity and stability of droplets in microdevices with various cavity settings are compared, and an optimal configuration is proposed. Finally, prediction models for the flow distribution of shear-thinning fluids in asymmetrical parallelized microchannels are established.

Pickering foams and parameters influencing their characteristics

Pickering foams are available in many applications and have been continually gaining interest in the last two decades. Pickering foams are multifaceted, and their characteristics are highly dependent on many factors, such as particle size, charge, hydrophobicity and concentration as well as the charge and concentration of surfactants and salts available in the system. A literature review of these individual studies at first might seem confusing and somewhat contradictory, particularly in multi-component systems with particles and surfactants with different charges in the presence of salts. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of particle-stabilized foams, also known as Pickering foams and froths. Underlying mechanisms of foam stabilization by particles with different morphology, surface chemistry, size and type are reviewed and clarified. This paper also outlines the role of salts and different factors such as pH, temperature and gas type on Pickering foams. Further, we highlight recent developments in Pickering foams in different applications such as food, mining, oil and gas, and wastewater treatment industries, where Pickering foams are abundant. We conclude this overview by presenting important research avenues based on the gaps identified here. The focus of this review is limited to Pickering foams of surfactants with added salts and does not include studies on polymers, proteins, or other macromolecules.
