Evaluation of Interfacial Structure of Self-Assembled Nanoparticle Layers: Use of Standard Deviation between Calculated and Experimental Drop Profiles as a Novel Method

The self-assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) at interfaces is currently a topic of increasing interest due to numerous applications in food technology, pharmaceuticals, cosmetology, and oil recovery. It is possible to create tunable interfacial structures with desired characteristics using tailored nanoparticles that can be precisely controlled with respect to shape, size, and surface chemistry. To address these functionalities, it is essential to develop techniques to study the properties of the underlying structure. In this work, we propose an experimental approach utilizing the standard deviation of drop profiles calculated by the Laplace equation from experimental drop profiles (STD), as an alternative to the Langmuir trough or precise microscopic methods, to detect the initiation of closely packed conditions and the collapse of the adsorbed layers of CTAB-nanosilica complexes. The experiments consist of dynamic surface/interfacial tension measurements using drop profile analysis tensiometry (PAT) and large-amplitude drop surface area compression/expansion cycles. The results demonstrate significant changes in STD values at the onset of the closely packed state of nanoparticle-surfactant complexes and the monolayer collapse. The STD trend was explained in detail and shown to be a powerful tool for analyzing the adsorption and interfacial structuring of nanoparticles. Different collapse mechanisms were reported for NP monolayers at the liquid/liquid and air/liquid interfaces. We show that the interfacial tension (IFT) is solely dependent on the extent of interfacial coverage by nanoparticles, while the surfactants regulate only the hydrophobicity of the self-assembled complexes. Also, the irreversible adsorption of nanoparticles and the increasing number of adsorbed complexes after the collapse were observed by performing consecutive drop surface compression/expansion cycles. In addition to a qualitative characterization of adsorption layers, the potential of a quantitative calculation of the parameter STD such as the number of adsorbed nanoparticles at the interface and the distance between them at different states of the interfacial layer was discussed.

High-Performance Nanogel-in-Oils as Emulsion Evolution Controller for Displacement Enhancement in Porous Media

We designed and synthesized high-performance nanogel-in-oils with intermediate properties between solid particles and liquid droplets for multiphase flow control in porous media. The ultrasmall polymeric nanogels prepared via inverse emulsion polymerization were efficiently encapsulated in micrometer-sized oil droplets with the aid of surfactants during transfer from the oil phase to the aqueous phase. The composite colloidal system exhibited high loading capacity, unimodal size distribution, and long-term kinetic stability in suspension. The colloidal behaviors of nanogel-in-oils and the corresponding interfacial evolution during displacement in porous media were investigated via microfluidic experiments. In situ emulsification was observed with a state contrary to that of static characterizations. The spontaneous and sustainable formation of foam-like water-in-oil macroemulsions originated from aqueous phase breakup and oil film development, both enhanced by nanogel-in-oils. Sweeping efficiency enhancement by invasion events and residual oil transport in macroemulsion phases yielded exceptional displacement performances. Flow field fluctuations and emulsion state variations can be manipulated by adjusting nanogel-in-oil concentrations. The nanogel-in-oil suspension was found to exhibit optimal performance among the tested dispersed systems.

A comprehensive review on the behavior and evolution of oil droplets during oil/water separation by membranes

Membrane separation technology has significant advantages for treating oil-in-water emulsions. Understanding the evolution of oil droplets could reveal the interfacial and colloidal interactions, facilitate the design of advanced membranes, and improve the separation performances. This review on the characteristic behavior and evolution of oil droplets focuses on the advanced analytical techniques, and the subsequent fouling as well as demulsification effects during membrane separation. A detailed introduction is provided on microscopic observations and numerical simulations of the dynamic evolution of oil droplets, featuring real-time in-situ visualization and accurate reconstruction, respectively. Characteristic behaviors of these oil droplets include attachment, pinning, wetting, spreading, blockage, intrusion, coalescence, and detachment, which have been quantified by specific proposed parameters and criteria. The fouling process can be evaluated using Hermia and resistance models. The related adhesion force and intrusion pressure as well as droplet-droplet/membrane interfacial interactions can be accurately quantified using various force analysis methods and advanced force measurement techniques. It is encouraging to note that oil coalescence has been achieved through various effects such as electrostatic interactions, mechanical actions, Laplace pressure/surface free energy gradients, and synergistic effects on functional membranes. When oil droplets become destabilized and coalesce into larger ones, the functional membranes can overcome the limitations of size-sieving effect to attain higher separation efficiency. This not only bypasses the trade-off between permeability and rejection, but also significantly reduces membrane fouling. Finally, the challenges and potential research directions in membrane separation are proposed. We hope this review will support the engineering of advanced materials for oil/water separation and research on interface science in general.

Multiphase displacement manipulated by micro/nanoparticle suspensions in porous media via microfluidic experiments: From interface science to multiphase flow patterns

Multiphase displacement in porous media can be adjusted by micro/nanoparticle suspensions, which is widespread in many scientific and industrial contexts. Direct visualization of suspension flow dynamics and corresponding multiphase patterns is crucial to understanding displacement mechanisms and eventually optimizing these processes in geological, biological, chemical, and other engineering systems. However, suspension flow inside the opaque realistic porous media makes direct observation challenging. The advances in microfluidic experiments have provided us with alternative methods to observe suspension influence on the interface and multiphase flow behaviors at high temporal and spatial resolutions. Macroscale processes are controlled by microscale interfacial behaviors, which are affected by multiple physical factors, such as particle adsorption, capillarity, and hydrodynamics. These properties exerted on the suspension flow in porous media may lead to interesting interfacial phenomena and new displacement consequences. As an underpinning science, understanding and controlling the suspension transport process from interface to flow patterns in porous media is critical for a lower operating cost to improve resource production while reducing harmful emissions and other environmental impacts. This review summarizes the basic properties of different micro/nanoparticle suspensions and the state-of-the-art microfluidic techniques for displacement research activities in porous media. Various suspension transport behaviors and displacement mechanisms explored by microfluidic experiments are comprehensively reviewed. This review is expected to boost both experimental and theoretical understanding of suspension transport and interfacial interaction processes in porous media. It also brings forward the challenges and opportunities for future research in controlling complex fluid flow in porous media for diverse applications.
