Abstract
Preparing bio-based air filtration membrane through green electrospinning strategy is a vital approach to alleviating environmental and energy crises. However, the development of related biomaterials and method for regulating membrane structure are still lacking. In this study, ethyl cellulose (EC) bimodal nanofibrous membrane was prepared by electrospinning using ethanol and water as solvents to achieve high-performance air filtration. A new strategy for bimodal fiber molding based on molecular weight modulation was proposed. The EC polymer chains with medium molecular weights were subject to the highest degree of inhomogeneity of solvent intrusion, and there were significant differences in viscous forces "microscopically", leading to the formation of bimodal structure by inhomogeneous stretching of the jet. The well-defined bimodal structure endowed EC membrane with excellent air filtration performance. The filtration efficiency for PM0.3, pressure drop, quality factor were 99.11 %, 42.2 Pa, and 0.112 Pa-1, respectively. Compared to the commonly used zein, EC cost just 12.77 %, and its solution had a 50 % longer shelf life, making it a more desirable biomaterial. This work will facilitate the application of more biomaterials in air filtration, promote the green fabrication of high-performance air filtration membranes, and realize sustainable development.

Abstract
The application of natural small molecule (NSM) in electrospun fibers is the key to achieving powerful functionality and sustainable development. However, the lack of understanding regarding the mechanism for loading NSM hinders the advancement of high-performance functional fibers. This work clarified the loading mechanism of NSM in polymer solution by comparing the different behaviors of curcumin (Cur), phloretin (PL), and tea polyphenols (TP) blended ethyl cellulose (EC) solutions. We found that TP may lead to the folding of polymer chains due to its strongest hydrogen bond, which in turn promoted the dispersion of TP along the polymer chain. Therefore, TP could achieve good electrospinnability at the highest loading capacity (16 times the Cur and 4 times the PL). Finally, chitosan was introduced into EC/TP to prepare tree-like nanofibers, achieving high-performance antibacterial air filtration. The filtration efficiency for 0.3 μm NaCl particles, pressure drop, and quality factor were 99.991 %, 85.5 Pa, and 0.1089 Pa-1, respectively. The bacteriostatic rates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were all 99.99 %. This work will promote the application of NSM and the developments of multifunctional electrospun fibers and high-performance air filters.

Abstract
Functionalization of bio-based nanofibers is the development tendency of high-performance air filter. However, the conventional structural optimization strategy based on high solution conductivity greatly hinders the development of fully bio-based air filter, and not conducive to sustainable development. This work fabricated fully bio-based nanofibrous membrane with formaldehyde-adsorbable and antibacterial capabilities by electrospinning low-conductivity solution for high-performance air filtration and applied to lightweight mask. The "water-like" ethyl cellulose (EC) was selected as the base polymer to "nourish" functional materials of gelatin (GE), β-cyclodextrin (βCD), and curcumin (Cur), thus forming a solution system with high binding energy differences and electrospinning into ultrafine bimodal nanofibers. The filtration efficiency for 0.3 μm NaCl particles, pressure drop, and quality factor were 99.25 %, 53 Pa, and 0.092 Pa-1, respectively; the bacteriostatic rates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were 99.9 % and 99.4 %, respectively; the formaldehyde adsorption capacity was 442 μg/g. This is the first report on antibacterial and formaldehyde-adsorbable high-performance air filter entirely made from bio-based materials. This simple strategy will greatly broaden the selection of materials for preparing high-performance multifunctional air filter, and promote the development of bio-based air filter.

Abstract
Highly efficient separation of surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions with both a high separation efficiency and high permeation flux is still challenging. In this work, an under-oil superhydrophilic/superhydrophobic Janus membrane was fabricated by combining an electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) membrane and its modified membrane composited with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA). The incorporation of PEGDA is realized by in situ ultraviolet (UV)-initiated polymerization during the electrospinning process, and it endows the upper layer with unique under-oil superhydrophilicity that is very important for the demulsification of water-in-oil emulsions. The under-oil superhydrophobic lower layer serves to block the water and also can promote the permeation flux, because of its oil-absorbing ability. For surfactant-stabilized water-in-n-hexane emulsion (water content of 1 wt %), such a Janus membrane exhibits outstanding separation performance with a separation efficiency of >99.95% and permeation flux of >25 000 L m-2 h-1. Moreover, the Janus membrane shows excellent reusability and high applicability for water-in-diesel, water-in-hexadecane, and water-in-petroleum ether emulsions with separation efficiencies of 99.63%, 99.80% and 99.82%, respectively. These features make the Janus membrane a promising candidate as a separation membrane for surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions.

Abstract
Wound healing is a systematic and complex process that involves various intrinsic and extrinsic factors affecting different stages of wound repair. Therefore, multifunctional wound dressings that can modulate these factors to promote wound healing are in high demand. In this work, a multifunctional Janus electrospinning nanofiber dressing with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, controlled release of drugs, and unidirectional water transport was prepared by depositing coaxial nanofibers on a hydrophilic poly(ε-caprolactone)@polydopamine-ε-polyl-lysine (PCL@PDA-ε-PL) nanofiber membrane. The coaxial nanofiber was loaded with the phase change material lauric acid (LA) in the shell layer and anti-inflammatory ibuprofen (IBU) in the core layer. Among them, LA with a melting point of 43 °C served as a phase change material to control the release of IBU. The phase transition of LA was induced by near-infrared (NIR) irradiation that triggered the photothermal properties of PDA. Moreover, the Janus nanofiber dressing exhibited synergistic antimicrobial properties for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus due to the photothermal properties of PDA and antibacterial ε-PL. The prepared Janus nanofiber dressing also exhibited anti-inflammatory activity and biocompatibility. In addition, the Janus nanofiber dressing had asymmetric wettability that enabled directional water transport, thereby draining excessive wound exudate. The water vapor transmission test indicated that the Janus nanofiber dressing had good air permeability. Finally, skin wound healing evaluation in rats confirmed its efficacy in promoting wound healing. Therefore, this strategy of designing and manufacturing a multifunctional Janus nanofiber dressing had great potential in wound healing applications.

Abstract
Organic flame-retardant-loaded battery separator offers a new opportunity for battery safety. However, its poor thermal stability still poses serious safety issues. Inspired by Tai Chi, an "internal-cultivating and external-practicing" core-shell nanofibrous membrane was prepared by coaxial electrospinning, wherein the shell layer was a mixture of polyvinylidene fluoride, silicon dioxide (SiO2), and graphene oxide (GO) and the core layer contained triphenyl phosphate (TPP). SiO2 and GO enhanced the thermal stability and electrochemical performance. The encapsulated TPP prevented heat transfer and the degradation of electrochemical performance caused by its direct dissolution. This separator exhibited outstanding thermal stability and flame retardancy: it did not burn and remained relatively intact (91.2%) in an open flame for 15 s. The battery assembled with a composite separator showed excellent performance: the initial capacity reached 164 mA h/g and maintained 95% after 100 charge-discharge cycles. This novel strategy endows high-performance lithium batteries with relatively higher safety.

Abstract
Functional textiles with high-performance directional water transport for regulating human sweat are in high demand because of growing concerns about the role of comfort in the performance of wearer. However, the fabrication of such materials remains a critical job. Here, we report a facile strategy to develop hydrophilic oriented polyacrylonitrile (HOPAN)/hydrophilic polylactic acid @polyvinylidene fluoride (HPLA@PVDF) composite membrane with surface energy gradient for enhanced directional water transport. Three step fabrication strategy involves electrospinning of oriented polyacrylonitrile (OPAN fibers) on polylactic acid (PLA) nonwoven surface followed by dip-coating in hydrophilic agent, and single-side electrospray of PVDF dilute solution on HOPAN/HPLA. Combination of highly oriented fiber structure, differential pore size and asymmetric wettability between two layers enabled instant water transport. The resultant fabricated composite membranes offer superior properties with one-way transport capacity (R) of 1117%, overall moisture management capacity (OMMC) of 0.91, and excellent water vapor transmission rate of 11.6 kg m-2 d-1. The successful preparation of these fascinating directional water transport materials offers new insight into the role of fiber alignment along with differential apertures and asymmetric chemical structure for realizing membranes for quick-drying applications.

Abstract
The skin is a complex layer system and the most important barrier between the environment and the organism. In this review, we describe some widespread skin problems, with a focus on eczema, which are affecting more and more people all over the world. Most of treatment methods for atopic dermatitis (AD) are focused on increasing skin moisture and protecting from bacterial infection and external irritation. Topical and transdermal treatments have specific requirements for drug delivery. Breathability, flexibility, good mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and efficacy are important for the patches used for skin. Up to today, electrospun fibers are mostly used for wound dressing. Their properties, however, meet the requirements for skin patches for the treatment of AD. Active agents can be incorporated into fibers by blending, coaxial or side-by-side electrospinning, and also by physical absorption post-processing. Drug release from the electrospun membranes is affected by drug and polymer properties and the technique used to combine them into the patch. We describe in detail the in vitro release mechanisms, parameters affecting the drug transport, and their kinetics, including theoretical approaches. In addition, we present the current research on skin patch design. This review summarizes the current extensive know-how on electrospun fibers as skin drug delivery systems, while underlining the advantages in their prospective use as patches for atopic dermatitis. Abstract
With the increasingly serious air pollution and the rampant coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID–19), preparing high–performance air filter to achieve the effective personal protection has become a research hotspot. Electrospun nanofibrous membrane has become the first choice of air filter because of its small diameter, high specific surface area and porosity. However, improving the filtration performance of the filter only cannot meet the personal needs: it should be given more functions based on high filtration performance to maximize the personal benefits, called, multifunctional, which can also be easily realized by electrospinning technology, and has attracted much attention. In this review, the filtration mechanism of high–performance electrospun air filter is innovatively summarized from the perspective of membrane. On this basis, the specific preparation process, advantages and disadvantages are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, other functions required for achieving maximum personal protection benefits are introduced specifically, and the existing high–performance electrospun air filter with multiple functions are summarized. Finally, the challenges, limitations, and development trends of manufacturing high–performance air filter with multiple functions for personal protection are presented.

Abstract
Antibacterial air filtration membranes are essential for personal protection during the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, high-efficiency filtration with low pressure drop and effective antibiosis is difficult to achieve. To solve this problem, an innovative electrospinning system with low binding energy and high conductivity was built to enhance the jet splitting, and a fluffy nanofibrous membrane containing numerous ultrafine nanofibers and large quantities of antibacterial agents was achieved, which was fabricated by electrospinning polyamide 6 (PA6), poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), chitosan (CS), and curcumin (Cur). The filtration efficiency for 0.3 μm NaCl particles was 99.83%, the pressure drop was 54 Pa, and the quality factor (QF) was up to 0.118 Pa-1. CS and Cur synergistically enhanced the antibacterial performance; the bacteriostatic rates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were 99.5 and 98.9%, respectively. This work will largely promote the application of natural antibacterial agents in the development of high-efficiency, low-resistance air filters for personal protection by manufacturing ultrafine nanofibers with enhanced antibiosis.

Abstract
A conceptually novel multi-bioinspired strategy based on structures and functions derived from the Namib desert beetle and lotus leaf is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme synergistically combines the features of alternating wettability patterns and asymmetric wettability for improved directional water transport. Consequently, a Janus copper mesh, which substantially outperforms other single-bioinspired synthetic materials, is produced. The Janus copper mesh achieves directional self-transportation of tiny water droplets and continuous water flow in a gravity-irrelevant or an anti-gravity manner without energy consumption. This depends on the asymmetric wettability and alternating hydrophobic-hydrophilic wettability patterns on the hydrophobic surface of the mesh. In particular, Janus copper shows remarkable selective directional water transport in a water-oil system, rendering it a promising candidate for practical applications.
