Critical In-Plane Density of Polyelectrolyte Brush for the Ordered Hydrogen-Bonded Structure of Incorporated Water

All-atom molecular dynamics simulations of polymer and polyelectrolyte brushes

Densely grafted polymer and polyelectrolyte (PE) brushes, owing to their significant abilities to functionalize surfaces for a plethora of applications in sensing, diagnostics, current rectification, surface wettability modification, drug delivery, and oil recovery, have attracted significant attention over the past several decades. Unfortunately, most of the attention has primarily focused on understanding the properties of the grafted polymer and the PE chains with little attention devoted to studying the behavior of the brush-supported ions (counterions needed to screen the PE chains) and water molecules. Over the past few years, our group has been at the forefront of addressing this gap: we have employed all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for studying a wide variety of polymer and PE brush systems with specific attention to unraveling the properties and behavior of the brush-supported water molecules and ions. Our findings have revealed some of the most fascinating properties of such brush-supported ions and water molecules, including the most remarkable control of nanofluidic transport afforded by the specific ion and water responses induced by the PE brushes grafted on the inner walls of the nanochannel. This feature article aims to summarize some of our key contributions associated with such atomistic simulations of polymer and PE brushes and brush-supported water molecules and counterions.

Hydrogen-Bonded Structures of Water Molecules in Hydroxy-Functionalized Nanochannels of Columnar Liquid Crystalline Nanostructured Membranes Studied by Soft X-ray Emission Spectroscopy

Here, we report a synchrotron-based high-resolution soft X-ray emission spectroscopy study on hydrogen-bonded structures of water molecules in the self-organized, hydroxy-group-functionalized one-dimensional nanochannels of liquid crystalline nanostructured membranes. The water molecules confined in the uncharged hydroxy-functionalized nanochannels (which have a diameter of about 1.5 nm) exhibit hydrogen-bonded structures close to those of bulk liquid water, even directly interacting with diol groups. These hydrogen-bonded structures contrast with the more distorted hydrogen bonding of water molecules confined in self-organized channels with a diameter of 0.6 nm formed by an analogous nanostructured membrane with a cationic moiety, which was explained by the ability of the channel functional groups to donate and accept hydrogen bonds in a confined space and the nanochannel diameter.

Bactericidal Ability of Well-Controlled Cationic Polymer Brush Surfaces and the Interaction Analysis by Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation

In this study, cationic poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl) trimethylammonium chloride) (PMTAC) brush surfaces were prepared by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP), and their properties were systematically investigated to discuss the factors affecting their bactericidal properties and interactions with proteins. Model equations for the analysis of electrophoretic behaviors were considered for accurate parameter estimation to indicate the charge density at the interface. The zeta potential dependency of the PMTAC brushes was successfully analyzed using Smolchowski's equation and the Gouy-Chapman model, which describes the diffusive electric double layer. The analysis of the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) indicated that the electrostatic interaction promoted protein adsorption, with a large quantity of a negatively charged protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA), being adsorbed. The bactericidal efficiency of the high-graft-density polymer brush (0.45 chains nm-2) was higher than that of the low-graft-density polymer brush (0.06 chains nm-2). To investigate the mechanism of this phenomenon, we applied the dissipation change (ΔD) of QCM-D analysis. The BSA was likewise adsorbed when the brush structure was changed; however, the negative ΔD indicated that the BSA-adsorbed, high-graft-density PMTAC brush became a rigid state. In the bacteria culture media, the behaviors were the same as BSA adsorption, and the high-graft-density polymer brush was also estimated to be more rigid than the low-graft-density polymer brush. Moreover, for S. aureus adhesion after incubating in TSB, a small slope of ΔD/ΔF plots considered initial adsorption of bacteria on the high-graft-density polymer brush strongly interacted compared to that of the low-graft-density polymer brush. The scattered value of the slope of ΔD/ΔF on the high-graft-density polymer brush was considered to be due to the dead bacteria between the bacteria and the polymer brush interface. These investigations for a well-defined cationic polymer brush will contribute to the design of antibacterial surfaces.
