Highly Transparent and Flexible Zn-Ti3C2Tx MXene Hybrid Capacitors

Study of Zinc Diffusion Based on S, N-Codoped Honeycomb Carbon Cathodes for High-Performance Zinc-Ion Capacitors

Capacitors with zinc ions, with excellent stabilities, low cost, and high energy density, are expected to be promising energy storage devices. However, the development of zinc-ion capacitors is quietly restricted by low specific capacity and cycling stability. Herein, to overcome these limitations, honeycomb-structured S, N-codoped carbon (SNPC) is constructed by one-pot calcination of waste corn bracts and thiourea. The honeycomb structure of SNPC is demonstrated to provide abundant active sites that can enhance the extron/ion transport, conductivity for high power export, and ion adsorption capacity in energy storage applications, leading to a higher electrochemical performance achieved. The electrolytes of zinc salt have also been studied. It reveals that the SNPC electrode presents the best electrochemical performance in a 2 M ZnSO4 and 0.5 M ZnCl2 electrolyte mixture because in the electrolyte mixture, Cl- can replace the existing bound water in the solvation structure to form an anion-type water-free solvation structure ZnCl42-. The SNPC-800 electrode with a highly improved surface area (∼909.0 m2 g-1) is proved to be more suitable as the electrode than other materials. Aqueous zinc-ion capacitors (ZICs) have been assembled by the honeycomb-structured SNPC-800 as the cathode, which can achieve a relatively wide working voltage range of 0.1-1.8 V. The SNPC-800 ZICs exhibit a superior specific capacity of 179.1 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1. The energy density of SNPC-800 ZICs reaches an impressive value of 89.6 Wh kg-1 at 53.8 W kg-1, and it sustains 28.3 Wh kg-1 at 1997.6 W kg-1. In addition, there is 99.8% capacity retention in the SNPC-800 ZICs over 5000 cycles. The absorption energy in SPNC is much higher than that in undoped CPC, as confirmed by density functional theory, which reveals that introducing of heteroatoms (S, N) has a comparatively active advantage at increasing the Zn-ion storage capacity. This work proposes a practical strategy for the effective recycling of waste biomass materials into honeycomb carbon electrode materials. Moreover, the honeycomb carbon-based ZICs with excellent electrochemical performance and long-term cycling stability possess great potential to be a superior cathode in practical applications.

Graphitic Carbon Nitride-Induced Multifold Enhancement in Electrochemical Charge Storage of CoS-NiCo2S4 for All-Solid-State Hybrid Supercapacitors

In order to improve the electro-microstructural physiognomics of electrode materials for applications in better efficiency supercapacitors, herein graphitic carbon nitride (GCN)-heterostructurized CoS-NiCo₂S₄ is designed using a controlled material growth synthesis procedure. The developed CoS-NiCo₂S₄/GCN possesses ample hydrophilicity, possible charge transfer between GCN and CoS-NiCo₂S₄, uniform phase distribution, and distinctive microstructural characteristics. The preliminary electrochemical studies in the three-electrode setup show GCN-induced lower charge transfer resistance and very unique Warburg profile corresponding to extremely low diffusion resistance in CoS-NiCo₂S₄/GCN as compared to pristine CoS-NiCo₂S₄. Furthermore, GCN is found to significantly induce surface-controlled (capacitive-type) charge storage and frequency-independent specific capacitance up to 10 Hz in CoS-NiCo₂S₄. Furthermore, the CoS-NiCo₂S₄||N-rGO and CoS-NiCo₂S₄/GCN||N-rGO all-solid-state hybrid supercapacitor (ASSHSC) devices were fabricated using N-rGO as the negative electrode material, and the inducing effect of GCN on the supercapacitive charge storage performance of the devices is thoroughly studied. Results demonstrate that the mass specific capacitance and areal capacitance of CoS-NiCo₂S₄/GCN||N-rGO are ∼2 and ∼4 times more than those of the CoS-NiCo₂S₄||N-rGO ASSHSC device, respectively. Furthermore, the CoS-NiCo₂S₄/GCN||N-rGO offers more energy density, rate energy density, and additional charge-discharge durability (over ∼10,000 cycles) than the CoS-NiCo₂S₄||N-rGO ASSHSC device. The multifold performance improvement of CoS-NiCo₂S₄ with GCN heterostructurization is ascribed to GCN-induced supplemented porosity and pore widening, ionic nonstoichiometry (Ni^2±δ, Co^2±δ, and Co^3±δ), wettability, integrated enhancement in the conductivity, and electroactive-ion accessibility in the CoS-NiCo₂S₄/GCN heterocomposite. The present study offers vital physicoelectrochemical insights toward the future development of low cost and high-performance electrode materials, and their implementation in high-rate and operationally stable all-solid-state hybrid supercapacitor devices, for application in the next-generation front-line technologies.

Rational Design of Ti3C2Tx MXene Inks for Conductive, Transparent Films

Transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs) with a high figure of merit (FOM_e, defined as the ratio of transmittance to sheet resistance) are crucial for transparent electronic devices, such as touch screens, micro-supercapacitors, and transparent antennas. Two-dimensional (2D) titanium carbide (Ti₃C₂T_x), known as MXene, possesses metallic conductivity and a hydrophilic surface, suggesting dispersion stability of MXenes in aqueous media allowing the fabrication of MXene-based TCEs by solution processing. However, achieving high FOM_e MXene TCEs has been hindered mainly due to the low intrinsic conductivity caused by percolation problems. Here, we have managed to resolve these problems by (1) using large-sized Ti₃C₂T_x flakes (∼12.2 μm) to reduce interflake resistance and (2) constructing compact microstructures by blade coating. Consequently, excellent optoelectronic properties have been achieved in the blade-coated Ti₃C₂T_x films, i.e., a DC conductivity of 19 325 S cm^-1 at transmittances of 83.4% (≈6.7 nm) was obtained. We also demonstrate the applications of Ti₃C₂T_x TCEs in transparent Joule heaters and the field of supercapacitors, showing an outstanding Joule heating effect and high rate response, respectively, suggesting enormous potential applications in flexible, transparent electronic devices.
