Long-Acting Antibacterial Hydrogels Constructed by Interface-Induced Directional Assembly

Self-assembled supermolecular hydrogels of therapeutic agents without structural modification are of great significance in biomedical applications. Nevertheless, the complex conformations and elusive interactions of therapeutic molecules limit the controlled assembly of hydrogels. Molecules at the interface might have different arrangements and assemblies compared to those in bulk aqueous solution, which could potentially alter the selectivity of supramolecular polymorphs. However, this effect is still not well understood. Here, we demonstrate the interface-induced self-assembly of fibers for hydrogels, which is distinct from the spherical aggregates in the bulk aqueous solution, using cephradine (CEP) as a model compound. This phenomenon is caused by the packing of anisotropic molecules at the interface, and it can be applied to control the supramolecular polymorphism for the direct self-assembly of hydrogels of therapeutic agents. The interface-induced hydrogel exhibits a high degree of adjustable release and a long-acting bactericidal effect.

Beyond nothingness in the formation and functional relevance of voids in polymer films

Voids-the nothingness-broadly exist within nanomaterials and impact properties ranging from catalysis to mechanical response. However, understanding nanovoids is challenging due to lack of imaging methods with the needed penetration depth and spatial resolution. Here, we integrate electron tomography, morphometry, graph theory and coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation to study the formation of interconnected nanovoids in polymer films and their impacts on permeance and nanomechanical behaviour. Using polyamide membranes for molecular separation as a representative system, three-dimensional electron tomography at nanometre resolution reveals nanovoid formation from coalescence of oligomers, supported by coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. Void analysis provides otherwise inaccessible inputs for accurate fittings of methanol permeance for polyamide membranes. Three-dimensional structural graphs accounting for the tortuous nanovoids within, measure higher apparent moduli with polyamide membranes of higher graph rigidity. Our study elucidates the significance of nanovoids beyond the nothingness, impacting the synthesis‒morphology‒function relationships of complex nanomaterials.

Targeted Elimination of Surface Defects in Carbon Fibers: Formation of a Hybrid Structure Combining Rigidity with Flexibility from Sonochemical-Induced Directional Growth of Nano-ZIF-8 and Subsequent Annealing

Currently, the mechanical performance of carbon fibers (CFs) has yet to fully realize its theoretical potential. This is predominantly attributed to the significant constraints posed by surface defects, greatly impeding the widespread application of carbon fibers. In order to address this issue, we employed a sonochemical-induced approach in this study to achieve in situ growth of nanoscale zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) at the surface defects of carbon fibers. After high-temperature treatment, the structure of ZIF-8 decomposed into ZnO and inorganic carbon, reinforcing the carbon fiber structure from both flexible and rigid aspects. Our research indicates that when the temperature reaches 500 °C, a substantial portion of ZIF-8 undergoes thermal decomposition, giving rise to zinc oxide and inorganic carbon. The flexible inorganic carbon and rigid ZnO form a meshlike structure, which welds to the surface defects of carbon fibers, resulting in strong interactions and contributing to the delay of fiber fracture. Compared to unmodified carbon fibers, the mechanical performance increased by approximately 15.86%. Based on the aforementioned analysis, this method can be considered a direct and effective approach for reinforcing carbon fiber structures, presenting a novel approach for the precise elimination of surface defects on carbon fibers.

Structure and Thermodynamics of Linear, Ring, and Catenane Polymers in Solutions and at Liquid-Liquid Interfaces

In recent decades, advances in the syntheses of mechanically interlocked macromolecules, such as catenanes, have led to much greater interest in the applications of these complexes, from molecular motors and actuators to nanoscale computational memory and nanoswitches. Much remains to be understood, however, regarding how catenated ring compounds behave as a result of the effects of different solvents as well as the effects of solvent/solvent interfaces. In this work, we have investigated, using molecular dynamics simulations, the effects of solvation of poly(ethylene oxide) chains of different topologies─linear, ring, and [2]catenane─in two solvents both considered favorable toward PEO (water, toluene) and at the water/toluene interface. Compared to ring and [2]catenane molecules, the linear PEO chain showed the largest increase in size at the water/toluene interface compared to bulk water or bulk toluene. Perhaps surprisingly, observations indicate that the tendency of all three topologies to extend at the water/toluene interface may have more to do with screening the interaction between the two solvents than with optimizing specific solvent-polymer contacts.

The Contributions of Supramolecular Kinetics to Dynamics of Supramolecular Polymers

Supramolecular polymers exhibit well-controlled dynamics with fascinating capacity for remodeling, self-healing, and stimuli-responsiveness. Supramolecular kinetics of non-covalent bonds is a dominant control handle among the relevant factors to tailor dynamics of supramolecular polymers. This Review focuses on elucidating how supramolecular kinetics dictates the polymer dynamics in supramolecular polymer systems. The ways to tailor supramolecular kinetics are firstly examined as prerequisites for structure-activity study of supramolecular polymers. We next discuss the role of supramolecular kinetics in supramolecular polymers under different polymer architectures by the combination of both of theoretical and experimental studies. Finally, we conclude by discussing the existing challenges and opportunities in the current studies.

Noncovalently Cross-Linked Polymeric Materials Reinforced by Well-Designed In Situ-Formed Nanofillers

Noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials generally exhibit lower mechanical robustness than traditional polymeric materials. Therefore, it is important to improve the mechanical properties of noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials using an efficient and generalized approach. In this Perspective, we systematically summarized the recent development of noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials reinforced by in situ-formed nanofillers. The synergy of high-density noncovalent interactions and in situ-formed rigid nanofillers provided an effective means for the fabrication of noncovalently cross-linked plastics with high mechanical strength. The design of in situ-formed tough nanofillers, which could deform and dissociate, endowed the noncovalently cross-linked hydrogels and elastomers with high toughness, excellent stretchability, elasticity, damage resistance, and damage tolerance. Benefiting from the well-designed in situ-formed nanofillers, these noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials with enhanced mechanical strength still exhibited satisfactory healing, recycling, and reprocessing properties. Outlooks were provided to envision the remaining challenges to the further development and practical application of noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials reinforced with in situ-formed nanofillers.
