Surface engineering of multifunctional nanostructured adsorbents for enhanced wastewater treatment: A review

Rapid urbanization and industrialization have significantly contributed to the contamination of the environment through the discharge of wastewater containing various pollutants. The development of high-performance surface functional nanostructured adsorbents is of wide interest for researchers. Therefore, we explore the significant advancements in this field, focusing on the efficiency of nanostructured materials, as well as their nanocomposites, for wastewater treatment applications. The crucial role of surface modification in enhancing the affinity of these nanostructured adsorbents towards targeted pollutants, addressing a key bottleneck in the utilization of nanomaterials for wastewater treatment, was specifically emphasized. In addition to highlighting the advantages of surface engineering in enhancing the efficiency of nanostructured adsorbents, this review also provides a comprehensive overview of the limitations and challenges associated with surface-modified nanostructured adsorbents, including high cost, low stability, poor scalability, and potential nanotoxicity. Addressing these limitations is essential for realizing the commercial viability of these state-of-the-art materials for large-scale wastewater treatment applications. This review also thoroughly discusses the potential scalability and environmental safety aspects of surface-modified nanostructured adsorbents, offering insights into their future prospects for wastewater treatment. It is believed that this review will contribute significantly to the existing body of knowledge in the field and provide valuable information for researchers and practitioners working in the area of environmental remediation and nanomaterials.

Snowflake-like Metastable Wurtzite CuGaS2/MoS2 Composite with Superior Electrochemical HER Activity

In the present work, we report the synthesis of wurtzite CuGaS₂ and its composite with MoS₂ and explored their efficacy toward two important applications, viz. electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and adsorption of Rhodamine B dye. The CuGaS₂ was synthesized via a low-temperature ethylenediamine-mediated solvothermal method. The obtained products were characterized by various techniques such as X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to ascertain the phase formation, surface morphology, and elemental oxidation states. The electrocatalytic activity of the wurtzite CuGaS₂ and CuGaS₂/MoS₂ composites toward HER was investigated, wherein the CuGaS₂/MoS₂ composite exhibited superior activity when compared to the pristine sample with a small Tafel slope of 56.2 mV dec^-1 and an overpotential value of -464 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm^-2. On the other hand, the synthesized CuGaS₂ also showed an impressive adsorption behavior toward Rhodamine B dye with 99% adsorption in 60 min, which is relatively better than that observed with the composite material.

Enhanced Tetracycline Adsorption of MoS2 via Defect Introduction Under Microwave Irradiation

Defect engineering is a promising method for improving the performance of MoS₂ in various fields. In this study, sulfur-defect-enriched MoS₂ (SD-MoS₂) nanosheets were fabricated via a facile microwave-hydrothermal strategy in 10 min for tetracycline (TC) adsorption applications. The introduction of sulfur defects in MoS₂ induced more exposed unsaturated sulfur atoms at the edge, enhancing the interaction between the adsorbent and antibiotic and improving the adsorption activity of the antibiotic. Density functional theory calculations further revealed that sulfur defects in MoS₂ could alter the electronic structure and exhibited low TC adsorption energy of -2.09 eV. This work provides a new method for fabricating MoS₂ nanosheets and other transition metal dichalcogenide-based adsorbents with enhanced antibiotic removal performance and a comprehensive understanding of antibiotic removal mechanisms in SD-MoS₂.

Three-Dimensional Hierarchical Seaweed-Derived Carbonaceous Network with Designed g-C3N4 Nanosheets: Preparation and Mechanism Insight for 4-Nitrophenol Photoreduction

The development of g-C₃N₄-based photocatalysts with abundant active sites is of great significance for photocatalytic reactions. Herein, a smart and robust strategy was presented to fabricate three-dimensional (3D) g-C₃N₄ nanosheet-coated alginate-based hierarchical porous carbon (g-C₃N₄@HPC), including coating melamine on calcium alginate (CA) hydrogel beads, freeze-drying hydrogel beads as well as pyrolysis at high temperatures. The resulting photocatalyst possessed a significantly high surface area and a large amount of interconnected macropores compared with porous carbon without the melamine coating. The unique structural features could effectively inhibit the curling and agglomeration of g-C₃N₄ nanosheets, provide abundant photocatalytic active sites, and promote mass diffusion. Therefore, the g-C₃N₄@HPC composite exhibited remarkable photocatalytic activity and outstanding stability toward the photoreduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) by NaBH₄ under natural sunlight and simulated visible-light irradiation (λ > 420 nm) using a 300 W xenon lamp. Moreover, the mechanism toward the photocatalytic reaction was extensively studied by quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments. The results showed that active hydrogen species were able to be achieved by following a dual-channel pathway in the NaBH₄ system, which included photocatalytic reduction of H⁺ ions and photocatalytic oxidation of BH₄^- ions. This work not only opens up a new way to design efficient photocatalysts for various reactions but also provides a reference for an in-depth study of the photoreduction mechanism.

Aminated Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube-Doped Magnetic Flower-like WSe2 Nanosheets for Efficient Adsorption in Acidic Wastewater

The water body environment is related to ecological and human health. Adsorption is an effective means to remove pollutants from water bodies. Currently, the common adsorbents suffer from disadvantages such as structural instability and poor adsorption performance under acidic conditions, which not only affect the adsorption efficiency but also cause secondary pollution of water bodies. In this study, a novel aminated multiwalled carbon nanotube-doped flower-like nanocomposite was designed, where the anionic or neutral groups were protonated under acidic conditions, and it displayed a higher adsorption capacity for dyes by ion exchange, represented by methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RB). WSe₂ in the composite increases its adsorption sites. The adsorption efficiency of pollutants in acidic wastewater was enhanced while avoiding secondary contamination. The synthesized composites showed maximum adsorptions of 27.55 and 27.47 mg/g for MB and RB, respectively. The current work offers a novel approach to treating acidic wastewater.

Recent advances in visible-light graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) photocatalysts for chemical transformations

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has emerged as a new research hotspot, attracting broad interdisciplinary attention in the form of metal-free and visible-light-responsive photocatalysts in the field of solar energy conversion and environmental remediation. These photocatalysts have evolved as attractive candidates due to their non-toxicity, chemical stability, efficient light absorption capacity in the visible and near-infrared regions, and adaptability as a platform for the fabrication of hybrid materials. This review mainly describes the latest advances in g-C3N4 photocatalysts for chemical transformations. In addition, the typical applications of g-C3N4-based photocatalysts involving organic transformation reactions are discussed (synthesis of heterocycles, hydrosulfonylation, hydration, oxygenation, arylation, coupling reactions, etc.).
